Babylon 5: The Road Home

A new B5 animated movie dropped the other day.

It's good and enjoyable, if you are a fan. Animation is ok, the story is a bit on the cheeky side, but the animation medium lends itself to that. A lot of fan service, A LOT. Some names are dropped which might have been only in the books so far, not sure. We see a Vorlon planet killer in action. The actors for Sheridan, Ivanova, Londo, Lyta, Lochley and Lennier return as voice actors which was pretty neat.

tl;dr: Sheridan jumps through time and parallel universes trying to get back home to his own

Absolutely hate that soulless garbage, everyone moves like a unnatural robot. But I like B5 enough that I may watch at some point, not in a hurry though

Not my favourite either, but it's better than some edgy or experimental nonsense at least.

It was nice as a one off to see everyone again. Can't say I'd want to see a series made like it

It was nice that everybody was alive in that one parallel world at the end where the shadow war never happened. And they also took their time for some gadget kino.

Yeah man, dare I say multiverse done right. I'm big fan of parallel world stories, so this scratched an itch. Too bad marvel is giving the sub-genre a bad name.

Agreed. JMS should do another live action show before it's too late... he is 70 I think. The vultures will rape B5 after he dies.

I don't know whether the expansion of multiverses/timelines is sort of a backdoor for the B5 reimagining, that's at least somewhat in production now that the one WB exec that hated B5 is gone.
And while JMS has great ideas, and not being constrained by syndication means he can bring his original ideas of B5 to life. I'm worried that it'll become pozzed beyond belief. You only have to look at his more recent stuff like Sense8, but maybe he was unduly influenced by the Wachowski's on that one.

JMS is weird. Sometimes he says outrageous stuff and makes disgusting pozzed garbage like Sense8, but then B5 has no political propaganda and neither does the animated movie which is a miracle in current year. Maybe it is down to creative control - if he uses his own production company and has control it turns normal, if it's just a job in someone's production then he can't help if it gets pozzed. Maybe he cares only about B5 and everything else is just a paycheck. I don't know. I am cautiously optimisitc after the animated movie. He loves B5, he knows the audience, he has aspergers, so it probably redpilled. He never sold out all these years when it comes to B5.

Perhaps not propaganda, but denfintely some messaging. The whole Clarke/Nightwatch thing was a stab at xenophobic far right/(actual)facism. And there was a general anti-authoritarian bent (Psy-Corps, the crux of the Shadow/Vorlon conflict).

Nightwatch can be communist as much as fascist.

At a baseline yeah, but the fact it encouraged and got baited by the joining of anti-alien members makes it more far right in my eyes. But then horseshoe theory and all that.

I see your point. In my country the commies were extremely xenophobic and shot everyone at the border.

Nightwatch can be communist as much as fascist.

The issue is not when there are internally consistent politics in the show universe. The problem and messaging happens when the fascits in the show are lead by an orange real estate mogul, for example. B5 never did that.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. I thought the politics while a bit basic in some aspects were handled quite well. The issue I'm wrestling with is that there's some low hanging fruit in terms of contemporary parallels for what B5 tackled. And it would be easy to use them in the reimagining.

I'm afraid of that as well. I really hope JMS won't spoil his legacy by going for it. Theyight have given him freedom because "lol animation", but a full blown TV series is another matter.

Nah, it's a pretty straightforward nostalgia trip for the fans. If anything it plays it too safe, and doesn't introduce anything new, even in the alternate times/dimensions.

B5 might be one of the few instances where studio meddling saved a show

      Anonymous

How? Due to their frickery of denying conformation of renewal, JMS had to compress multiple storylines in season 4. The frreing Earth from the Clarke administration story was meant to take up the whole season. Then season 5 wouldn't have been the damp squib it was as it would've had a properly fleshed out Minbari civil war, and the whole Byron/Psy-Coprs stuff would've had time to be done properly as well.

        >How?
JMS had some really out there ideas, a lot of the stuff with the Minbari, that would have alienated, (heh), a lot of people. I think the studio forcing some restraint on him did some good.
