That is insanely low and so bad it goes beyond just flopping, that really is only explained by a complete cultural rejection by audiences, literally worldwide. Given its marketing and ties to other marvel movies, the only way the BO is that bad is an intentional rejection.
Shang Chi, Antman 3, Thor 4, you can convince yourself those are flops for other reasons but this is so abysmally low its not explainable any other way. This was the general populace going frick you.

Capshit is dead unless it's cheap.

If Spider-verse had the same budget as Marvels, it would've been a bomb so bad they would reboot the entire universe. We know, it already happened with a spider-man movie that cost that much and made MORE.

            >If Spider-verse had the same budget as Marvels, it would've been a bomb so bad they would reboot the entire universe.

No it wouldn't have. Spider verse had a 690 million dollar box office. 220 million times 3 is 660 million dollars. SV would have been a profitable if it cost as much as the Marvel’s. You are a delusional moron as pathetic and mind broken as the people you rail against.

Not really, no. Invincible, The Boys, My Hero Academia, and Spider-verse are still doing extremely well. Even DC is doing better if you factor in Peacemaker and The Batman. People are just getting sick of the mediocre movies that Marvel has been putting out.

            Anonymous

yeah, especially with Amazon Prime where they know the video portion is an afterthought to most of their customers (if they're even aware it's there).

but I agree with the other anon that the issue is bad movies, not capeshit. Any Batman or Spiderman movie will still make money. Deadpool will make money. Marvel would still be making money but they were under the impression that the audience would eat whatever they shat out so they tried to push a bunch of D-list female characters that would be cheap to cast. They didn't get any real male leaders to take up the stories after RDJ and the rest retired. As a result it's just been like they MCU has been spinning it's wheels for four years now, waiting for the next main character to arrive.

Black Panther probably could have been their main guy if the actor hadn't died.

              Anonymous

The three non-Sony characters who could have carried the MCU were Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and Doctor Strange.

One is dead, one is ruined, leaving only Strange left with any viability as a lead.

Let’s do some loose math on this. Movie cost at least $250 million to produce due to extensive reshoots. Let’s conservatively assume they only spent another $100 million in global advertising. Total spend $350 million. Assume Disney’s take is a generous 60% of box office (they have deals with theatres that favour them), Disney’s net is 120 million, so the film is a $230 million loss. That’s without taking into account more abstract aspects like future brand damage and investor confidence. Hopefully this is the coffin nail for capeshit.

        Anonymous

They don't get 60%. The highest they ever had was 60% for Last Jedi and they only did that because they were able to browbeat cinemas into taking it because "Star Wars will make 2 billion easy you have to take this deal". When every cinema got fricked by Disney, they never gave them 60% again.

Assuming, of course, that's what it actually is.

Hey remember when literally everyone, including Disney "Insiders", claimed Rise of Skywalker cost a 'staggering' 275 million? And when everyone was baffled why the supposed 220 million Age of Ultron caused such panic for "Underperforming"? Well...

            Anonymous

VR went over their productions from the UK filings and those numbers aren't actual, they're lower than what actually got filed. They're soft obscured using the tax credits.

The end cost of ROS was closer to 600 million to make and market.

              Anonymous

Yes that's why the picture says "Net", you're talking about gross. That's this picture.

Tax credits are technically lowering the budget so net, which is just "After all the rebates and shit", is always better to post and to remind everyone that even if you strip it down to just the pure costs alone, Disney is a bunch of fricking liars when it comes to their already stupidly high budgets and Rise of Skywalker is, confirmed, the very first Billion Dollar Bomb in history.

Think about it. An "outright rejection" brings them 200 millions for s a dog shit movie nobody wanted. Many way better movies earned less.
The only reason why it's in "flopped hard" category, is because of overblown budget. If it was 50-80, it would be "total success".

It's the culmination of a series of flops. Think about it like this: The Force Awakens made 2 billion. Then came The Last Jedi. It was so fricking bad, but it still made a billion. Now, that's a billion less than before. The Rise of Skywalker somehow found a way to disappoint even more people. It made even less than Last Jedi. Now, every Star Wars product is a flop, or it just barely meets expectations.

The Marvel's is another female lead film, hence it's not made for men either, which is why so many men avoided it outside of the beta eunuchs.

It's hard to relate to a character who is inhumanly flawless and never has any character growth because they are already perfect. When you know nothing can hurt them there are no stakes or tension. Look at Captain America and Iron Man (and Thor before he turned into a housewife), how much they suffered, struggled, and changed over the years. They were the most popular characters, and now they are gone, replaced by characters that are poorly written and that the fans don't care about.

Overpowered =/= flawless. Power has nothing to do with being perfect, and it doesn't mean there can't be some kind of adversely, trouble, character development, or whatever. Especially considering that it's a comic action movie, not some stuffy Oscar drama.

Yeah it's funny that every other Marvel character falls into either the "prideful character who needs to be humbled and learn to be heroic" or "humble character who learns to be heroic". Whereas Captain Marvel is an arrogant prideful character who is just an arrogant b***h from start to finish who never changes or grows and the only "suffering" she goes through is that apparently every single male in her entire universe is a twitter feminist strawman evil sexist trying to hold her down because she's just too amazing and awesome.

So how much will they lose if you include marketing + theatre cut + taxes?

      Anonymous

      200+ million

        Anonymous

        easily over $300 million

it cost 220 million to make, you double that for advertising and distribution costs and it needed to make half a million in the box office to break even. Which breaking even is still considered horrible because in the shareholders minds they would've more money just dumping it into bonds. So i think you can do the math.

Probably the reason every journalist is finally shitting on Disney is because their check just bounced.

        >how much will they lose
Hard to say due to ~~*Hollywood*~~ accounting, however, we can estimate based on what they claim.

        Production budget claimed: $274 million
British tax credit bonus: $55 million
Total production budget before re-shoots: $219 million

Marketing costs are usually projected to be half of the production costs, so in this case we can call it an even $100 million for world-wide marketing costs.
Production with marketing total: $319 million

This film underwent an additional 4 weeks of re-shoots AFTER the initial production budget reports. How much that cost is unknown, though.
        Re-shoot cost estimate: $20 million

        Total estimated costs: $339 million

Studios earn about 50% of world wide sales.
Total world wide sales: $197 million

So now we can estimate total loss.
        Total estimated costs: $339 million
        Total estimated earnings: $197 x .5 = $98.5 million

        Total estimated losses: $339 - $98.5 = $240.5 million

So this piece of shit "girl power" trash will cost ~~*Disney*~~ an estimated $240.5 million dollars.

        Go WOKE go BROKE motherfrickers.

The marketing was way more than 100 mil and the reshoot numbers are a conservative guess, and we won't know the real numbers for a year most likely since it will be split between 23 and 24 filings, so early 24 will be the earliest total estimates but those loss numbers will be north of 300 million even with the tax credit. They'll split the loss between two years to try and hide it.

you would be surprised but the first reported budget was 200 mil and it had more work done to it as well and that is traditional animation which takes more time.

On top of that, it was a pseudo-capstone movie for disney's centennial, so the marketing was everywhere.

The losses for wish, per ratio of gross expenditure should actually exceed marvels. By percentage but obviously they can hide that easier since they did not have to disclose numbers. Same with gotg 3, since it was shot in georgia.

Nobody buys into them because female camaraderie does not exist. I work with women. All they do is gossip about each other. Whoever isn’t there that day is the target. And when they’re not talking about each other, they’re talking about their own family members. At least men will talk about something autistic and fictional like powerscaling superheroes or athletes. Female teamups only work in animation like Power Puff Girls and Sailor Moon because there’s already a layer of non-reality.

turns out nerds are very obsessive about and loyal to the hobbies/interests, but when they have finally had enough, that obsession still remains and the love turns to hate, so they embark on a crusade to destroy the people that took their hobby/interest away from them

They might also think it failed because people are tired of superhero movies, so maybe theyll look for some other IP to make Woke gay movies with

Under no circumstance do i think theyll stop with the Woke gayness

It's a "visibility" thing. Nobody watches those cheap movies except weird film nerds.
They have to woke-ize the most visible (biggest) movies, because those wield the most cultural influence.
The big dollar value is part of it, hence the fake Billion Dollar Box Office empty-cinemas stunt for Craptain Marvel 1 and Black Manther.

The problem now is they can't do it again (and I bet Brie screeched about it), because it exposes too much of the HW money laundering systems which then becomes part of the public discourse, led by our little website here. Nobody is just saying "Yuck, she's horrible. Why is she in this?", they're now asking "How can they afford this? The economics of it don't make sense!". And if one thing is gonna trigger the normie revolution, it's rich privileged shits getting a free (luxury) ride while they're not even able to afford a Big Mac and everyone in the media spider-web screaming in their ear about how "entitled" they are if they don't like it.

People went to see MCU movies because they had a "seal of quality", audiences trusted Marvel. Even if a Marvel movie was below par, it was usually still at a high level of quality and the characters weren't shatt on.

    > Pushed Diversity shit.
    > Turned Thor into a joke.
    > Turned Wanda into a cartoon villain.
    > Confusing self-referencing multiverse shit which casual audiences despise.

The audiences wanted none of these things, and resented popular characters being turned into morons/villains while Team Diversity was elevated.

Wanda turning into a villain could have actually been very kino. In fact, she'd have been a way better Avengers level threat than We Wuz Kang, and felt more impactful if written right because we are already familiar with her.

I saw Wandavision expecting her to take on this role, and was so disappointed in how they actually took the character. Such a fricking confusing mess. I thought they would go "let's make this into our Dark Phoenix story, but people are tired of seeing that story so much so we will do something similar and do it right this time."

Boy was I fricking wrong. Multiverse of Mad shit is where I gave up entirely. I was holding on to some hope. Sam Rami on a Doc Strange flick? Scarlet Witch getting powered up? Hell, it felt like it had the chance to turn things around. But no. It was the most disappointing piece of shit ever. Loki was the only good series and only as a standalone. Didn't even bother with season 2.

    >frumpy pakistani superhero covered up to her eyeballs in a frumpy costume, she's apparently from Disney plus or something and looks like a tertiary character at best or someone who shows up in the background just to stand around a bit
    >all the marketing anyone even sees is these three unlikeable off-putting characters pose around
    >no mention of the plot
    >no mention of what any of them are about or what their powers are specifically
    >no context of any kind, you can't even place WHERE the movie is going to take place
    >virtually no information about the movie is conveyed other than the there main characters existing
    >later on find out that the main villain is another black woman (with gold in her teeth) who's acting unhinged

I'd be hard pressed to figure out a better audience repellent than this. It's a miracle it even got the money it did. I have no clue what kind of person even went to see this. I guess maybe OCD freaks that compulsively need to watch anything Marvel releases so they don't miss some crucial side info or whatnot.

Remember the first marvel movie was a massive flop as well since Disney had to do some tricks to get the 1 billion revenue for the movie despite everyone reporting completely empty theaters for the movie. Since they were paying for Fox in disney shares, they couldnt let the movie flop that would hurt the share prices so they did everything they could to bolster it up.

In comparison, current disney is very poor right now and cant do the same tricks to bolster their box office revenues anymore which is why all their movies are naturally flopping.

no one is safe from the media in 2023, plenty of israelites have been taken aim at before, you're incredibly naive to think they care about anything other than money. talking about this israelite made a lot of people a lot of money because people were obsessed with talking about it last year.

and pretty much, he has been stalked by an insane negress for the past 5 years or so and she coordinated a bunch of bullshit. all the unsubstantiated allegations are connected. the stuff he was arrested for obviously happened, but the kidnapping/grooming/assault - all manufactured by the same few people.

he didn't actually even apologize for anything specific, and one can only apologize for things you actually did wrong
                >“Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” Miller said in a statement. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
nowhere in that statement is there any confession to anything, it’s a generic acknowledgement and message to loved ones about their mental health issues. if you think this is an “admittance” to anything let alone crimes like kidnapping or grooming, that’s you projecting meaning that isn’t there.
like what was said, use basic media literacy and read beyond a headline.

Can one of Cinemaphile's resident accountants tell me if this flopped harder than The Flash in terms of a cost-to-profit ratio? I need to know how hard to laugh.

      Anonymous

      It definitely did, considering:
      - this movie isn't going to even sniff the $270M Flash made
      - we know for a fact Marvels spent more on television advertisements alone, so the overall marketing budget was probably higher
      - the budget for Marvels was $220M (technically $275M, but they got a subsidy from the UK government), while the budget for Flash has been reported as being anywhere from $190M to $220M

so just off those basic numbers we know right now, it's going to flop harder, and this is before accounting for home media and merch sales, which Flash has a lot of because of Keaton Batman

I see people talk about the marketing but I have to confess as someone who actually still watches broadcast TV and listens to commercial radio for about 10 hours every day, I have never seen or heard a single ad for this movie and I wouldn't even know it existed if not for threads here.

The Flash reported production budget: $220 million

      Estimated marketing costs: $220 million x .5 = $110 million

Estimated total costs for The Flash: $330 million

      Estimated total costs: $330 million

Reported world wide box office: $266 million

With studios allegedly taking 50% of worldwide box office, The Flash managed to earn them $133 million dollars, which means they potentially lost $197 million dollars from the theater run. However, there were re-shoots involved, which could drive the losses higher than estimated.

Meanwhile, The Marvel's is potentially losing $240 million from its theater run, making it the bigger loser.

the point is it's still not "extensive reshoots" or even remotely comparable to the extra 4 weeks of filming The Marvels had

I don’t how long it was buddy except that it was most definitely 100 fricking percent longer than a day. Added to that the fact that Miller himself went back for reshoots on several different occasions. There are some sources that put the total production costs at 300 million.

yeah, he went back for reshoots over the summer when he was supposed to actually be on the run from the cops too, crazy how that works

discussing the flash movie is like discussing cryptids at this point

    >Make traditionally male genre movie centred solely around women.
    >Horrible casting.
    >Horrible writing.
    >Horrible directing.
    >Horrible costumes.
    >Looks like a 70's TV sci-fi show for kids.
I get that it wasn't made for me.
Who was it made for and how comes they didn't turn out to watch it?

It was made for people that enjoy watching black women be heroes. So nobody. Especially black women. There’s is no group of people on this planet that hates black women than black women themselves.

So? Doesn't mean they can't be adapted for the big screen.

How many Marvel flops will Disney go through before the incoming hostile takeover ends up happening? Will it be Fantastic Four where Silver Surfer is a woman and Doom likely will be one too? Or will the next Avengers movie flopping be the one?

    People are tired of
    - capeshit
    - expensive effects-laden extravaganzas without human drama or emotional sincerity
    - lame quippy bathos humour
    - angry women shitting on audiences before they've even seen their movie
    - girl power
    - excessive token diversity
    - patronising political correctness in general

All of which this movie has by the fricking ton. The dam is about to burst.
