Nudity and stark colors aside, this wasn't half bad. CG was really good considering how much of it was in full day light.

I remember seeing this movie in 2012 in theatres with my dad and we were the only ones in there. Was a kino movie. Even he liked it and he's not big into scifi
All it lacked was a charismatic lead, a better title and decent marketing.
Yeah, but for all of those things to happen Disney would have had to want it to succeed. JC went into production right around the time Disney bought Star Wars and decided that was going to be their studio's sole science fiction IP. JC lost a lot of its studio and marketing support, the plug got pulled on Tron, etc.
Seems moronic to intentionally tank a movie you already spent $300mil on. Granted even with good marketing I don't think it would have been a huge hit or the next star wars, but it probably wouldn't have been one of the biggest flops of all time either. I vaguely remember when this came out and I had zero idea what the hell it was and as such didn't end up watching it until years later when someone recommended it to me.
It needed a handsome Southern charmer as the lead character. John Carter is supposed to be so charming even the slaves on his relatives plantation worshipped the ground he walked on.
Not some sullen not-Southern-at-all douchebag who sulks through the entire movie.
Plus isn't John Carter a former confederate officer?
I haven't seen the movie in years but I vaguely remember them mentioning he was a Confederate in that too, only he's like a war weary sad guy instead of the proud, happy-go-lucky, swashbuckling hero that book John Carter is.
He's specifically from Virginia, and the opening of the movie has him being conscripted against his will into the Union Cavalry to do some Indian fighting. Only he keeps trying to escape, and the cavalry fricks up trying to arrest him. Again. Oh, and his wife and child are killed while he's away at war.
