BATGIRL Cancelled Movie Plot Summary

>Begins with young Barbara Gordon in ballet class. She sees the martial arts class across the street through a window and sneaks in, where she meets Jason Bard and Alysia Yeoh. With the help of her photographic memory, she uses some moves she saw to take down a bully.

>Barbara’s parents Jim and Sarah pick her up from class and Sarah convinces Jim to take Barbara on patrol, where he is ambushed and almost killed by a gang before Batman saves him, which amazes Barbara.

>Later, Jim hears a call over the radio saying his house is on fire. He arrives to see his home in flames and Sarah screaming in the window. He struggles to get inside just as the front door explodes, knocking him out. Barbara walks in and sees a large man before passing out.

>On present day, Barbara works a desk job at the GCPD, with Jim being retired as he suffered a heart attack. She often stays at home to take care of him, while also spending time with Alysia, who is now a bartender, and Jason, who is now a firefighter and has a crush on Barbara. She wants to become a patrol officer, but Jim won’t let her.

>Meanwhile, explosives expert Ted Carson works at a grocery story to pay for his sick wife’s medication, but is fired for his temper. Carson tries to get his old job with the Bressi crime family back, but is rejected by former boss Sal Bressi, who is now running for mayor. Carson burns down a pharmacy for wife’s medication.

    >Barbara dyes her hair red and attends a Halloween party hosted by Bruce Wayne. She wears a Batman costume, while Jim shows up wearing his normal trenchcoat with a sign on the back saying "nudist on strike." Killer Moth and his gang break into the party to rob the attendants.

    >Barbara drops from the ceiling and fights the goons along with Bruce, even saving his life. Killer Moth escapes but is later incinerated by Carson, since Killer Moth was on Bressi's hit list. Carson takes his grill and brings it back to the Bressi as proof of his kill, and Bressi rehires him as his enforcer Firefly, but will only pay him once he’s killed everyone on Bressi’s list.

    >Later, Barbara visits Alysia at her bar. She asks if Barbara dyed her hair red to be like Batgirl, as other people did after the news of her appearance at the party. She plays along not to seem suspicious, and realizes she loves being a vigilante and saving others.

    >Barbara breaks into the GCPD evidence locker using her photographic memory and retrieves an old Batarang and other supplies, which she uses to make her own Batsuit. She goes on patrol for the first time. Batman appears and tells her to stop being a vigilante, then drives off in the Batmobile. Barbara is able to steal his grapple gun in the process.

    >Barbara begins to investigate Firefly as he eliminates Bressi’s enemies, and suspects he was the one who killed her mother. In the process, she meets and becomes involved with Anthony Bressi, Sal’s son who refuses to join the family business and runs a homeless shelter, straining Barbara’s friendship with Jason.

      >Barbara is upset with her dad when he says he didn't see anyone in their apartment on the night her mother died. She lights up the Bat-signal to ask Batman for help, but he encourages her to solve it on her own, impressed by how far she has come already. Firefly attempts to kill Jim, but Batgirl saves him and figures out Firefly was a firefighter.

      >Barbara attempts to retrieve Carson’s files, but they were already taken by Jim, who had been investigating Carson himself and learned the head of the Gotham City Fire Department was corrupt and on Bressi’s payroll. Bressi then sent Firefly to kill Jim, but he ended up killing Sarah instead. Barbara asks Jason for help, and they expose the corrupt GCFD chief. Meanwhile, Carson’s wife dies, he blames Bressi, goes crazy and decides to burn Gotham down.

      >Firefly crashes Bressi’s mayoral speech and burns him to death, then sets off explosives he planted underground. Batgirl chases him on her bike, but he escapes as there is fire bursting out from the sewer grates. Jason arrives with a fire truck to help, but Firefly commandeers it. Jason tries to fight but Firefly hits him in the leg with an axe, then begins spraying fire everywhere.

      >Batgirl manages to catch up and fights Firefly on top of the truck, which crashes. Barbara and Jason jump off in time, while Carson is badly injured. Batgirl chases him into the docks and reveals that he killed her mother. Firefly apologizes, saying it was an accident, and it was Sarah’s death that motivated him to attempt to go straight.

      >Batgirl prepares to bring Firefly in when Anthony arrives with his men. While Batgirl fights them, he shoots Firefly in the head to avenge his father. Barbara is heartbroken that Anthony has decided to follow in on his father’s footsteps and, as Batgirl, vows to stop him one day. Anthony later reaches out to Barbara, but she ends their relationship.

      >On Christmas, Barbara, Jim, Jason and Alysia are celebrating together, and Barbara and Jason have gotten closer. Jim decides Barbara can become a patrol officer, but Barbara declines since she can use the database from her desk job to catch criminals.

      >Barbara sets up a base of operations in an abandoned clock tower. Batman arrives, asking if she is ready to be a hero. She accepts and he gives her a new armored suit. Batman and Batgirl talk about how they have been alone for so long, and bond over their traumatic lives. She challenges him to a race, playfully calling him “old man.” They get on a gargoyle and jump off together, gliding through Gotham City as the movie ends.

The very concept of a semi Burtonverse being modernized when the whole point was that it was firmly in some twisted art-deco reality is what would've ruined this movie. Even someone like Zaslav could understand that this movie would have never appeased the little audience that still watches DC movies.

This sounds like it pulled a lot from Batgirl Year One except instead of her motivation being men telling her she can't her motivation is a dead mom. Which is a fine change. The dialogue would have been really fricking bad for this to be a failure.

Is there a a source on that? This is the first I've heard it and I can't find a source. All behind the scenes pictures we've seen thus far looked to be filmed in a normally.

It's one I've not seen before. I dug up some older leaks but I can't find anything about that and it looks like it was filmed normally with regular cameras so any of that would have been done in post.

I've dug through and read test screening leaks and none of them mention this. The only thing I can find is a few Cinemaphile posts where an anon brings it up, is asked for a source, and then they deflect. None of the leaked footage or behind the scene pictures indicate this was how the movie was filmed. For a movie like Batgirl those types of effects would be done in post production anyway, so filming would have still used multiple cameras shooting at multiple angles. The troony who played Alyssa leaked a stunt on Twitter too and it is a clean shot. There's someone using his phone to film, but none of the test screening leakers have talked about this from what I can find. If the movie was shit it was shit but it doesn't seem to be a case of cinematography.

Doesn't sound like it was an unsalvageable script plot, my biggest complaint is Batman letting her go it alone and letting people get killed in the process. Admittedly not sure how else to excuse him from the plot.

I feel like it depends on execution. What Batman were to say in that scene would be critical. Is he working another case? Is he keeping an eye on her? I think it'd be a small issue if the rest of the film were strong.

      >Zaslav was pulling shit out his ass to justify killing it so he could keep his half a billion pay

      Ding ding ding.

That might be true, but the other part of it was that Batgirl and Scoob 2 were intended as HBO Max exclusives first, and they were only just thinking about having Batgirl released in theaters when Zaslav took over. Since they were intended for HBO Max it was easy to write them off since it was considered internal stuff

Had they moved forward with putting Batgirl in theaters months before Zaslav took over, it would've been harder for him to cancel it because WB would've already had to lock down contracts with theaters and maybe licensors, like Flash

        Anonymous

One of the leakers mentioned that when they were still trying to figure out what to do with DC Zaslav was really against Keaton's return and Batgirl's cancellation was part of that. It makes sense since they did reshoots to remove Keaton from Flash and rumor has it he's been removed from Aquaman.

          Anonymous

IIRC the removal from Aquaman already happened when they decided that Aquaman 2 took place before Flash (and filmed a Ben Affleck cameo instead). I don't remember when that happened, though.

That makes me think something in Keaton's contract might've allowed him to get like some kind of financial incentive in his appearances and made him too expensive for Zaslav to keep

He probably had a strong royalty incentive.

            Here we go

            https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/ben-affleck-batman-auqaman-2

            This was mentioned around mid-2022
This likely was around the time Zaslav took over, and either punted or reduced the power of people responsible
            >Ann Sarnoff forced out April 2022
            >Toby Emmerich stepped down in June 2022
            >Hamada eventually left in October 2022

and Michael De Luca and Pam Adby were rolling back the previous regime's anti-Snyder moves a little, and planned to change the Flash ending to have Keaton still Batman (but Affleck would be in the post-credit sequence), and Cavill as Superman

It implied that Batman Returns happened (Barbara creates her Batgirl cowl using Catwoman's cowl) yet also Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey as well (Barbara sees Harley's weapons from both movies in the evidence locker).

They never said how it would've worked, like was JK Simmons always Gordon since Batman 89 or were they going to reveal he's a descendent or relative of Pat Hingle's Gordon? Did Jack Nicholson Joker die and replaced with Leto Joker, or was Leto Joker always the Joker?
