>Be Green Lantern. >Get a film.

>Be Green Lantern.
>Get a film.
>Be an alright film; on par with anything Marvel did or action films of that period.
>Somehow get lambasted as the worst comic book movie ever (despite Blade 3, X-Men 3, Jonah Hex, etc. existing)

Alright, what gives? You frickers said this shit was literally the worst thing ever made; Reynolds shits on it anytime he can, but I just watched it and found it be pretty average for the period in which it was made. Wasn't bad ( wasn't stellar either ) but it was no different than any of the early Marvel films everyone jerks off.

Butchers the parallax story line in ome shot. Full of cgi slop.

Every movie at that time was filled with CGI slop. Didn't Fantastic Four also have CGI cloud Galactus?

yeah i agree, its overhated. i really dug the casting for the Green Lanterns. Geoffrey Rush as Tomar-Re, Michael Clarke Duncan as Kilowogg and of course Mark Strong as Sinestro, all wonderful casting. also Clancy Brown as Parallax is solid even if the character isn't much, Brown enhances the role as much as he could.

People were already getting tired of the Marvel formula even back then, but they were willing to put up with it in actual Marvel movies because the idea of a shared universe of films was still novel and generating lots of hype.

Green Lantern followed the Marvel formula dogmatically, but was not part of an already established cinematic universe. Viewers saw it as an opportunity to vent their frustrations with the overused formula. As a result, it became overhated and memed on.

Judging the film on its own merits, its gravest sin is the choppiness of its editing. It's was obviously intended to be a longer movie, but the studio took a cleaver to it to shorten the runtime so that theaters could squeeze more showings into a single day. It is otherwise a competently made superhero film.

      >Ryan, just stand there and look like you're about to rape the cameraman
      >don't worry the mask will make you look normal
      >yeah we'll fix the bacon suit in post

      >People were already getting tired of the Marvel formula even back then

they'd released 4 movies total by that date

it's weird that people were getting tired of it but then went and made Avengers so hugely successful the following year

      > its gravest sin is the choppiness of its editing.

no its gravest sin is that Hal's a total c**t to everybody, writes off a hundred million dollar test plane and thinks he's the wronged party

and this only happens because the producers wanted to show that Hal has the pure strength of will to make Hot Wheels with his magic ring

You have to remember that Green Lantern came around the same time as Nolan’s Batman and Iron Man. Nowadays it really isn’t any different than the slop Marvel peddled for the last decade.

IIRC it just added the deleted scenes and reedited the film. Which, to my surprise, is all it needed. This is a download for dlc file, you will need JDownloader to get the film.

          I was wrong
          >Summary
          >Removed scenes or parts of scenes that were not progressing the storyline or the characters.
          >Edited all scenes about Hal refusing to take the mantle of the Green Lantern or telling is not worthy of it.
          >Hal feels doubt and fear (a main theme of the movie) about is new role but accepts and embraces it.
          >Edited all scenes about Hector since his acting is sadly inconsistent, erratic and all over the place.
          >Hector is now a more serious character and surrender to the power of fear, until Parallax arrival that is.
          >Reordered a couple of scenes for a more logical and cohesive storyline.
          >A LOT of small cuts to remove cliché and bad dialogues and reaction shots.

Iron Man and The Dark Knight came out in 2008 and changed people's perception and expectations of the superhero movie. Paradoxically though, the Marvel films pretty much got a free pass because of the hype and novelty of the cinematic universe. So in 2011, Iron Man's reputation helped Cap and Thor, while The Dark Knight's only hurt Green Lantern, as it wouldn't be until the year after that Rises would come out.

if you're trying to start a cinematic universe you'd better make a damn good first impression
it's a shame because the lantern corps are the perfect backbone for an extended film franchise and a green lantern movie is a good starting point but they're never going to try it again

Standards used to be much higher. Something like At World's End schlockino and excess and maximalism was consider meh at the time but seems revolutionary compared to the mid MCU flick.

This happens to a lot of movies that don't deserve it.
Batman Forever, 03 Daredevil, Superman Returns. Movies that actually delve pretty close to the source material that the "fans" hated because it wasn't some low test MCU film or an edgefest

if they stuck to the comics some more it would have been a lot better.

I'd rather they bring back Legion from Emerald Dawn than the Parallax cloud thing

What Lantern comics? Comics aren't very popular outside of their iconography these days, so I can see why a studio exec might hesitate to be uber faithful.

Villain could have been Atrocitus run amok in Coast City, A big giant alien yellow robot, or Sinestro pretending to help.

They went with Hammond, one of the most disliked GL villains out there. and made him even worse than normal. I honestly don't know why they had to turn him into some weird loser dork pseudo rapist.

I don't feel it gets brought up enough, but Hector was probably the single worst villain they could have used to try to make GL go mainstream.
