If the army was allowed to conduct the war properly instead of having their hands tied by the politicians it could have turned into a Korean War pt. 2 situation. In that case South Vietnam might be a country today. Instead the politicos and the traitor hippies forced the war to end in North Vietnam's victory.

The US should have viewed troops in Vietnam as a permanent necessity, sort of like they're viewed in South Korea. If they didn't have that mindset they should have never agreed to help South Vietnam at all. Instead the politicians thought they could have it both ways and eventually leave, kind of how they viewed Iraq and Afghanistan. In all three cases the results were disastrous for the regimes left behind, with the Iraqi government only existing today because Obama sent troops back in after Bush pulled them out.

no one cares about actual history but the vietnam war had ended for about a year. during that small peaceful time we withdrew everyone and only promised south vietnam that if the north broke the treaty, we would give them weapons. so when the north broke it a year later, congress didn't supply the south with anything after ford had asked them to.

Homeless vets were a big deal in the 70s, all the drug use among soldiers in Vietnam led to them being worthless frickwits when they got out. It's still a bit of a problem today because you get a lot of morons with no long term planning skills who join the military, but it's less of one because the US military works to get vets jobs in order to avoid the bad press.

Veteran's preference was a thing in the 70s, but many people didn't take advantage of it for many reasons (drug use, no longer wanting to be associated with the military, etc). Rambo was meant to symbolize that kind of person.

    REMINDER:

John Stewart has done more for american military veterans than all of the republican party combined.

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/watch-live-jon-stewart-joins-lawmakers-to-push-pact-act-for-veterans-exposed-to-burn-pits
    >In a speech riddled with strong language, Stewart criticized Republican senators for speaking in support of veterans, but then voting against the bill that would increase spending by more than $300 billion over the next decade and dramatically boost health care services and disability benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    https://www.militarytimes.com/home/left-column/2023/04/07/jon-stewart-blasts-corruption-in-pentagon-spending-priorities/
    >“We got out of 20 years of war and the Pentagon got a raise,” Stewart said during remarks at the War Horse Symposium in Chicago on Thursday. “I can’t figure out how $850 billion to a department means that the rank and file still have to be on food stamps. To me, that’s fricking corruption.”

    https://www.uso.org/entertainment/jon-stewart
    >Stewart has entertained more than 9,000 service men and women both stateside and overseas in locations like Japan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Spain, Germany and Ireland. Most recently, he joined the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other entertainers on the USO Spring Tour around the world.
