It's not unheard of, many great films are remakes of older films that aren't necessarily franchises. Two notable examples are "The Thing" and "Scarface".
I don't think Showgirls was a sexploitation romp, I think it was a jab at movies like A Star is Born that glorify showbusiness. A lighthearted sexploitation movie wouldn't have a character get violently raped.
