From Big Herc's interviews, acc. to the one with Wes you had to put in work always and that seems to be common for state cali prisons (although YT comments had a few guys claiming that sometimes, if your sentence was short, you were allowed to serve it out with no trouble) but an interview with a guy who did time in an AZ state prison said that it was optional, only thing is that you had to jump in with the woodpile if there's a riot involving your race.
My semi-educated guess is that hardcore gangs (like the actual white supremacist skinheads like PDS, with whom Money got involved) will conscript anyone they can find but perhaps less radical ones will be more cool with it and maybe at most make you stic around their side of the yard looking tough or whatever.
In Texas there’s a latin prison gang called Tango Blast that got big and powerful specifically because you don’t have to do a hit to join and you’re allowed to leave once your sentence is up. Not like Money who was expected to put in work on the outside too. Turns out lots of guys are ok with banding together to survive prison but don’t want to make a lifetime commitment, so their numbers ballooned and now they’re quite powerful.

He has gone straight (from what I know, works in this car mechanic shop) but he told me that he did his work (of course, didn't say what) and kept cool with all of them without once looking weak or submissive to them which is a death sentence. I'm glad that he got to stay out, anon! All the memes are really funny but I do feel bad for those who get sucked into further and further criminal activity instead of rehabilitation. Having said that, I wonder how's that new El Salvadoran prison that apparently houses like all of the gang members. The outside seems to be super great now, but I also wonder how's the inside. Depends on the jail though, don't it? Not all white gangs are hardcore skinheads like PDS (Bottles, Shotgun, etc) AB (Redwood, The Beast, Money) or NLR (Ripper). Shot Caller featured the most infamous, idk what gangs you saw.
