What features can you give a simple cartoon character to distinguish they are male? You can't just draw them with their dick hanging out in a kid's cartoon. Anything men typically wear can also be worn by women these days without any issue (there is still stigma around men wearing women's clothes however). There is no long eyelashes equivalent for men which itself is ironic as in real life men tend to have longer eyelashes anyway. Men are literally the default, we even see this culturally reflected in multiple languages that use gendered words, where they use masculine articles as the gender neutral option.

you do know men have secondary sex characteristics, right? thicker faces, larger bodies, muscles, beards, more angular shapes overall
men aren't a default that women are the difference to, men and women balance one another

And none of that is prominent in Bluey designs

yes it is, but to a more subdued degree because they're fricking dogs and interesting breed based designs were more important than telling apart the sexes of characters who come on screen and pretty much instantly get referred to by their sex, behave in a way that is fit for their sex, or speak in a clearly gendered voice
the kids aren't gonna show it much but pretty much all the adults do

like you're telling me you can't tell which of these is male and which is female? you're pissing in my ass bro?

The muzzle whiskers are a dead giveaway. Chili's design may be androgynous, but Bandit's is very obviously male.

Yeah but not every man has a thick face, larger muscular body and beards. I'd even say the majority of male cartoon characters don't have most of these features at all yet we still understand them to be male even at a glance.

And how, anon? How do we recognize that someone is a man if they don't look like a man? By the way they act or talk or get referred to
Don't forget we humans have evolved to tell apart *human* men and women, not cats or dogs

              Anonymous

I already said how, because culturally men are the default. When you see a stick figure your brain interprets it as a man. But when you draw a stick figure with a little triangle on its legs to represent a dress you see it as a woman.

well that sounds like a personal hangup that if many people have, it's a good thing this show doesn't hinge on, because it means the next generation of kids watching won't hold such stupid ideas and won't be making moronic posts like these on the internet

this "men are the default!" crap is what makes feminists whine and complain till all the default, non gendered things are clearly and obviously divided by sex and then screen again to revert that, and then screech again 2 years later because they forgot they reverted that, and then-

                >*Instead of being smacked across the head and told 'you already had em c**t but you didn't like em that's why we have this issue' they decide to agree and add 'gender neutral emojis'*
                >...
                >All the gender neutral emojis just look like the old default emojis

I don't really care about Bluey's character designs being the way they are, I don't think it's that big of a problem, But I do think giving people a hard time over not being able to tell Bluey is a girl from appearance alone is bullshit. That's just human nature. Even if you were try to look for potential secondary characteristics in Bluey all you have is a square-ish body which is more associated with men (and is pretty pointless since that's how all the characters look) and her color being blue which is culturally understood to be a young boy's color so that doesn't help either.

                Anonymous

I don't mind if someone can't tell the genders apart by appearance, you can't affect what someone's sees or how they feel or be upset about it, but I don't think it's bad character design because I don't think a character's whole design motif should hinge first and foremost on being able to tell their sex apart, it's pretty much a non issue as soon as you watch the cartoon, who cares if you can't instantly tell when it's clear the more important thing the show runners wanted to focus on is clean designs and dog breeds? Every design needs to work within itself and sex is not the most important aspect of any character.

And I do fundumentally disagree that men are a "default" because men are just as different from women as women are from men, maybe societally in art, yet, people perceive it that way, but it's not always the case and no artist is obligated to uphold that belief.
Hell, most characters aren't made with their sex in mind, even the most obvious of tells. Pic rel wasn't made so you could tell she's a woman, she was made with beautiful, sexy, feminine features, she just IS a woman who looks like that.
