He really is. The prequels were perfectly executed in terms of showing him turn to the dark side and into the evil dictator he was in the OT whilst also being 100% justified in his actions the whole time.
Every 'evil' act he commits was out of fear of losing his loved ones, and then having his arc end by his own son being the only one to see the good in him... pure kino.
I was recently watching through the prequels and I think I figured out why Hayden Christensen's acting is so stiff.
He's talking like Vader. Vader has this dramatic, lofty, (often sarcastic) way of speaking which sounds awesome when a stage actor with a booming voice like James Earl Jones is saying it. But when you try to make a regular young white dude say those lines he just sounds weird.
Next time you watch the prequels and Anakin is saying something, imagine it being said in Vader's voice.
As an addendum to this:
Episode 1 Anakin is actually okay as far as child actors go and he's not trying to do the whole young Vader mannerisms. No, what makes the dialogue in Episode 1 is any time fricking Padme is talking. She's doing this weird aloof royalty schtick the whole time which makes her come off as an alien when Anakin and everyone else is talking to her like a normal human beings.
She still does it a little in the later episodes but I think Anakin doing Vader mannerisms just makes them seem like they are imitating each other and doing this dramatic stage actor thing.
