After rewatching all 8 episodes it's not as bad, since it says in episode 1 that he divorced his wife, and then later in the series it shows that she knew and supported the idea of dropping the bombs in order to secure a leadership postion in one of the better vaults.

Well if you don't poopoo Fallout 4 lore then actually there is a serum that turns you into a ghoul. Hanwiener took it and implies it was the last one but could easily be wrong given there is a HalluciGen building pretty close to Goodneighbor which is probably where he got it.
Another candidate for the serum he took (which could also just be involved with HalliciGen in some way) is the Cabot family's serum which extends life, gives you protection from rads, and will drive you insane if you overdose. People hating on the character because of his ghoul transformation are ignoring the million different ways there already are to be turned into a ghoul or super mutant. I just dislike the character because he's corny.

pretty sure the serum is just microdoses of radaway. we see him the first episode in the ground with 2 radaway bags so they're clearly necesary. The serums used in a quick inhaler puff are probably more desirarable to a prolonged drip. I imagine since LA only recently got nuked again there's a decent amount of background radiation that's enough to turn any ghoul feral. especially as it affects pretty much any surface food and water source.

That couldn't have been a dirty nuke like the ones they used in the Great War. Lucy and Maximus standed right next to the crater with no issues and Maximus didn't turn into a ghoul despite hiding in a fricking fridge when the nuke exploded. Compare that to the Glow in the first Fallout where you needed max rad resistance to just survive, or the Glowing Sea in Fallout 4.
I think the visual stuff is justifiable because of production realities, though. He had a lot of screentime and a lot of it was on location in pretty remote, inhospitable places, and the makeup work for more decayed skin would've been really hard to keep consistent. Other ghouls we see do look a bit more like the ones in the games but every scene I can think of them was an indoor one that would've been shot in an air conditioned soundstage, not in the middle of the Namibian desert and some of the other places they filmed with Goggins. I'm sure they also just didn't want him to look TOO repellent, he's supposed to be a somewhat sympathetic character.
Some of the differences in character, like not saying "smoothskin," could be explained by him being a prewar ghoul who still thinks of himself as the human he used to be.

Things that bothered me: plot of what happened in vault 33 is WAY more interesting than chasing the scientist.
Vault plot was giving you crumbs of what's going on every episode to it keeps the interest, head plot is basically a macguffin chase and then it was the most important thing in the universe for 10 minutes before the show ends. That was lame as frick.
It also bothered me that every character was running into every other character every episode. That was lame as frick.
It also needed a scene that shows if Norman did or did not get himself into a pod. That was very much needed and way more important for any normie looking at the show instead of baiting The Strip for game fans.
Other than that, the show is a solid 8, maybe needed a bit more random small encounters like the bridge scene, but it was a good show.

I'd assume earliest Vault Tech movement used the Vault tech cryogenic chambers to preserve people with brilliant minds, in hopes of helping to fix the world left after the nukes. The only truly educated people of the wasteland are typically from vaults.
