I wanted to but I lost interest. They took too long and the mid season break hurt them even more. Don't think I ever watched the Eve special either, I just don't care anymore

it was good but too many pointless sideplots about boring characters. Didnt leave me wanting more so i havent finished season 2 and probably never will.
That whole ordeal with mark helping the black dude take over his old boss... Does that have any significance later down the road? Because if not then that is a lazy ass way to develop Mark's character

      Anonymous

This show has little meaningless sideplots

In the one instance you picked yes both Titan and Machine Head are meaningless to the main plot but Battle Beast (one of the mercenaries Machine Head hired and the one who beat Mark) is among the top 5 significant characters for later on, that sideplot is his introduction

        Anonymous

they should have picked a better way to introduce the mercenary then because the way I see it titan and machine head were much more significant then he was. At the very least they could find a way to work titan into the rest of the show. That would be much more interesting than the other pointless side plots like marks mom crying for 10 episodes or amber working in a soup kitchen

          Anonymous

Eh the show already has way too many antagonists

Also the show is all about subverting expectations, and introducing one of the most important characters for the plot the way they did for Battle Beast is one of those ways to subvert expectations, later on you'll be like "holy shit this guy was Machine Head's mercenary????"

Like it or hate it you can at least rest assured all arcs are relevant eventually (except Mark's mom and Amber's yeah)

      >Does that have any significance later down the road?
It's significant in that it shows Mark is still a young moron.

Too bad anon the second season's later half is the show's best moment so far

What could you possibly be referring to?

        Anonymous

Well yes obviously that's why it's significant, thats what I meant when i said "develop Mark's character". I just feel like if you take an entire episode to introduce this whole sideplot with characters it should at least have some significance of its own aside from just being a building block for the main characters personal development

          Anonymous

          >you NEED to use every single second of screentime to the main plot otherwise it's a bad show
the show gets exhaustive and predictable if everything is part of the main plot

self contained side plots are great if done in moderation and if they are fun

            Anonymous

they are fun if they actually have some ripple effect in the world. If there is actually some point to any of it. But don't expect me to enjoy a side-plot that goes absolutely nowhere. It doesn't have to connect back to Mark directly, there is an entire world around him

              Anonymous

Again it did have significance, it just hasn't come to light yet. A lot of what happened in s1 will only be relevant in s3 or even s4.

                Anonymous

you already said only the mercenary comes back, I don't see that as significant when he was basically a side character of the side plot I'm being critical of

                Then don't watch it

                ok i wont

            Anonymous

also yes I guess side plots can be fun simply for the sake of being fun, but that one wasn't particularly "fun" imo. It didnt make me laugh, it wasn't interesting just for the sake of being interesting, it was just there. A good side plot example is the California detour that the police woman in Fargo season 3 makes. Ultimately it was completely pointless but it was fun to watch and the (pointless) characters were actually developed and fun

              Anonymous

The side plot is interesting because it shows the Mark is inexperienced and juvenile, he thinks he can just go around "defeating the bad guys" but he ignores that this could create power vacuums that put even worse people in charge of the city

Also you need to consider that Invincible is based on a very old comics that were very innovative for their time and pretty much set the pace for super hero stories from there onward. Back then that sort of side plot was brilliant. It may not seem innovative if you're watching the show based on it in 2024, but even then I think it holds up pretty well

ALSO (forgot to include it in this post) but it sets the mood for Invincible as a whole. It reinforces that this is a mature story where actions have consequences, it's not just "go beat the bad guys and save the world" like your average superhero story. It is not as simple, it's not always black and white etc etc. If that side plot took place in season 2 it would be pointless, but it actually happened in mid season 1 when it was still setting the tone.

                Anonymous

That tone was set from the first episode. They shouldn't need to be hammering it home that late in the show

                Anonymous

Eh now you're being disingenuous, this is the first time they hammer the point of moral ambiguity among villains, you're pretending it is somehow in s1e1 just to b***h about that side plot

                Anonymous

                >this is the first time they hammer the point of moral ambiguity among villains,
Among villains that literally do not fricking matter and have no plot significance, so tell me why I should care??? Like I said if there was some sort of ripple effect or something of that nature then I could see it having a purpose but don't act like they are developing a "mature" story when they just completely forget next episode what they made out to be a "villain" in the former one.
                >but that's the whole point of the show subverting expectations that earth drama is important
not that you were actually going to make this point but if you were that's stupid. If earth drama isn't important then don't spend so much goddamn time on it

                Anonymous

Anon for frick's sake they are parodying super hero stories, they have a "villain of the week" going on every now and then, it's for less than 10% of overall the screentime, stop being a little b***h holy frick

                Anonymous

It's not interesting because we already knew that Mark was inexperienced and juvenile, that is an essential part of his character from the moment he gets his powers. That side plot is just there to further enforce it for people who weren't paying attention. There is nothing that plot accomplished that made it worth an entire episode, especially when basically none of the characters it introduced will be making any other appearance
