I really don’t get atheism in fantasy settings. And I don’t mean from a logical “why would the character be that way” point of view. I mean narratively it just undermines everything the genre tries to do. It’s meant to be enchanting and engrossing but you’re intentionally calling attention to the impulse that gives life to the genre and calling it stupid. It’s a bit self defeating. You’re making it clear that your own creativity is parasitic on something you hate which diminishes my immersion in it

for me, berserk is far superior to lotr. what makes it good is that it doesn't come from a religious angle or any stupid shit like that. it's not a christian allegory like western fantasy always is. i will say that grrm doesn't have this problem but anyways. berserk depicts the world as a stark, brutal place. people are poor peasants breaking their backs day in and day out, the leaders are all corrupt criminals bleeding the people dry.
berserk has the same spirit about it that blood meridian does, where random death occurs constantly either from the environment or another character. it's pretty much a modern gnostic myth
