Breakind Bad is the most straight-forward morality on modern tv. Every time the protagonist does something bad and comes up with some rationalisation for why its fine, over the top horrifying consequences ensue. Hence the show is about drugs, because drugs seemingly give you happiness for free and then absolutely punish you for thinking that there is such a thing as free happiness. BB is all about how you always have to walk the straight path in life and any short cut leads to pain.

Season 1 and 2 aren't really. Taking a very grounded character and setting then slowly turning up the action movie nonsense is part of what makes breaking bad so good, the pacing is incredible and makes the crazy cartoon stuff later on believable.
BCS fricked that part up because Jimmys story feels completely grounded thoughout the whole series meanwhile Gus and every Salamanca is a cartoon character from the start. They should have cut out the Mike/Cartel stuff entirely and just let it be a character study of Jimmy
