Conceptually I think the idea of an honorary Asgardian being gifted armor/powers by odin is pretty cool, the gary stu elements I can look past given other comic origins but I just hate the design of him. He's always look like a malnourished horse and seeing him would inspire more fear than an image of a noble figure.

Funny thing is that I like him for looking like a freaky horse man. A lot of heroes are conventionally pretty and attractive, so having an appearance that marks him as an outsider or even threat makes the contrast with his noble personality more marked.

I'm seeing cogent reasons as to why he might hold a distaste for the character, and a lot of dismissive derogation which ranges between being overly defensive of Bill as to ignore the reasons for disliking him altogether, and acting like a child while accusing others of doing just that. That's the big problem with these threads, because trust me, plenty have been made which far less bitter wording but they all garner the same random animosity. If he hates Eric Masterson, FosThor and Throgg that's understandable to me
Yeah, I don't have any conceptual problems with someone hating Beta Ray Bill. Dude was intentionally drawn up to look like a freaky horse man, so whether or not you like him partially hinges on whether you like the look at all to begin with. I'm just more personally curious on the opinions regarding the other Thor-alikes, since I always felt Beta Ray Bill was much more minor in terms of divisiveness than the others.
Bill has this cultish aura to him, it's illegal to dislike him. It's one thing to dislike him based on his appearance, but you need only scroll up to get into juicier bits which are undeniable. Like Sif immediately fawning over Bill, Odin call him a son and giving him a freebie Uru hammer just because he's so totally cool and tubular. Thor loses all the time so I'm not sure "he beat Thor cleanly" is a good criticism of his character, but it did seem trashy to me on a reread to have this OC essentially hijack and match Thor's ENTIRE shtick, from the hammer to the Odinson label to Sif as a love interest to matching Thor in combat. But apparently we're not allowed to talk about any of this because Bill is... just so tubular... How can you dislike Bill?!

Well, you seem to express them no problem, so...
I feel most of those criticisms you listed primarily apply to Bill's introduction, which is meant to foster a huge sense of confusion in the reader on how this weird horse faced freak could be seen as anything resembling the nobility or purity of Thor. I found his later appearances and even his own storylines make him a lot more interesting since then, since his status as Thor's peer and more pragmatic world view make his interactions with Thor far more meaningful, but if you didn't read any of that then I can see why one would retain a poor impression of ol' horseface. You do have to admit that it was at least an ambitious kind of storyline for Walt Simonson to go with.
Simonson was very creative, I'll certainly give him that. It was under him that we first saw my favorite Thor gear, his battle armor from when Hela cursed his bones to be brittle.
Let me ask you this, what would you say to someone who dislikes the character concept itself, not just the introduction?
I'd be more curious which aspect they disliked, the "freaky looking alien that's considered a worthy champion inspite of his appearance" or the "unknown newcomer from out of town with the potential to be an equal/superior to the main character", really. Cause the latter is a very common trope in cape comics, and it's I'm sympathetic to people who are expressly sick of seeing crop up yet again.

He's not precisely wrong about Bill, per se. But I don't think Bill is too awful.
Bill maybe has a mary sue origin, but they made some good stories with him afterwards.
And more importantly, he is a character who doesn't frick around. When he fights a bad guy he doesn't think "He has good deep inside, we should let him join the Avengers, even though he almost caused cosmic genocide!", instead he does his best to cave in the skull of said bad guy. Even if bad guy in question is Galactus, he'll still go and frick them up to the best of his ability.
Nice to read a character like that every once in a while even if he can only really kill made-for-this-minicomic villains due to the unending status quo of Marvel comics.

It doesn't even matter what standards I have on the matter, because the Big 2 never made good stories with any of their female mary sues. They just tried to shoehorn them into every possible setting and story as obnoxiously as possible. Which is part of the reason I stopped reading capeshit a decade ago.
