Better Call Saul

Why couldn't Chuck just be honest with his brother about how he felt? Why did he have to pretend like nothing was wrong and have Howard take the blame for not wanting Jimmy in HHM?

I watched on netflix before they added the later seasons and I legitimately thought him walking away from kim taking on the persona of Saul Goodman at the courthouse was the end of the series for the longest time

Because we needed a show. So the writers had to contrive ways in which the characters deceived literally everyone, including logic and physics at times, in order to have a twist.

Characters soing dumb or selfish things doesnt mean its contrived. Chuck didnt want to be honest with Jimmy because despite saying he did t care he clearly dis care.

Chuck felt like he had to protect Jimmy. That also meant showing him tough love, probably like their father did, although i don't remember if they mention it.

Chuck was a turbosperg who hated Jimmy for facile reasons and intellectualized it

There is some truth to that

He still cared for his brother somewhat, and he knew it would crush Jimmy if he found out he was denying him. At the same time he also resented and envied Jimmy for being more charismatic than him, so keeping it a secret he’s fricking him over is a way for him to get a hidden victory over his brother everyone loves more than him, fuelling his ego.

    >Why couldn't Chuck just be honest with his brother about how he felt?
because he actually did still care about his brother. things aren't 100%, there's always nuance. you can care about someone while still not liking lots of elements of their personality. to tell him the truth would certainly alienate jimmy and ruin their relationship.

chuck has deep seated issues with jimmy that he can not reconcile. chuck did everything right in his life, he made his parents proud. he went to georgetown, an extremely prestigious law school. he cared for his mother and father and went above and beyond constantly. what did jimmy do? he shit all over his parents at every oppurtunity, he caused them stress by being a frick up, he stole from his father until he went bankrupt and literally died, and after all this, not only did his parents still continue to coddle the shit out of jimmy, the mom actually called out for jimmy before dying while chuck was sitting right there. it's not hard to see why he would be bitter over this for the rest of his life

on top of this, chuck is extremely upstanding and respectable. he has his life together and he's sophisticated. I don't think it's a reach to say that chuck wanted to escape his roots and get some upward mobility and move to the upper class. jimmy is trashy and acts like a scumbag. Chuck might have taken all the wrong actions but he was right in principle. jimmy just cant help himself and always regresses to acting like a scumbag and cheating the system.
I know people will say "well chuck made him that way", but that's not true. jimmy pulled a scam with the billboard before he knew anything about chuck's actions. there was 0 excuse for him to do that, he literally only did it because he wanted to take a shortcut.

      All true.
But I will say this, Chuck did almost everything right, but not everything, his marriage could not be mendes because he could not find it in himself to admit weakness/fault when it came to his illness and he choose to be rude to Rebecca instead of telling her what was actually going on. Its a good parallel to his unwillingness to be honest with Jimmy.

Jimmy was dishonest his entire life so Chuck got tired of it and didn't want to be honest with him either.

It was just a device the writers used to demonstrate Chuck’s immense capacity for neuroticism and deception. He was so assmad about his brother that he was having panic attacks, and also so prideful that he refused to admit he was having panic attacks over his brother and instead invented some absurd disease.
Jimmy represents everything that Chuck sees as wrong with people. Not only his own chicanery, but the willingness of others to look past it. It’s cosmically absurd to Chuck that people like him better. He’s like his Moby Dick, but instead of psychopathically killing whales like a real man he just curls up inside his house like a b***h
