The only people who disliked this film were weeb autists who would've hated any design that wasn't accurate to the Japanese films. It's one of the last true family-friendly blockbusters with a great mix of action and comedy. Really a great picture.

      It’s better than asiaticzilla

Great movie unfairly maligned. Literally in discernable in quality from the Japanese films to anyone who isn't terminally online and the best godzilla design ever. Crazy to think this got a bad reception and now we are stuck with monster verse and yojo slop when for one brief moment we had sovl

You guys are all based as frick, I'm glad people are finally seeing the film for what it is.

It runs from the military, it lays eggs, it doesn't have a heat ray, and it gets killed by jets. Literally the only thing it has in common with Godzilla is that it's a large reptile.

It does have a heat ray though. He uses it on some humvees

The force of its roar just kind of blows some cars up, and blows the flames at them. It's really gay.

I think it's time to rebrand the 98 movie to a remake of this to remind the japs who made the original nuclear lizard movie and give it a fair chance free of tokusatsu nerds.

Any "large reptile" that becomes a Kaiju monster thanks to radiation and subsequently stomps around a city terrorizing it is Godzilla. Simple as. It doesn't always have to look like Grimace with fangs.

Predates Godzilla by a year. Anyway, your point is ridiculous. There's approximately half a million giant radioactive kaiju that aren't Godzilla. .

And going by extended canon, it IS an actual atomic breath, rather than a methane-like gas that gets ignited.

        >The force of its roar just kind of blows some cars up, and blows the flames at them.
Even if you want to be stickler and disregard the games, and Godzilla the series, it is still technically a "methane-like power breath" in the scenes in the movie. The novelization has the version you're describing, but since it didn't test well with audiences they added the two scenes in the movie, and mention the properties in the script revision. Whether you like it or not, a breath/beam attack is represented in the final film.

Yes, this is clearly docile and and non-aggressive behavior, and not Godzilla utterly annihilating the military when they attack him.

I don't know how to break this to you, but the first 50 seconds of this clip is literally it running from the military

If you actually payed attention, you'd see that he's not running away, he's leading them to positions he can more easily attack from. Throughout the whole movie, Godzilla is very aggressive towards the military (submarine scene is another good example), you're just butt-hurt they had the technology to show him moving at high speeds in them.

And why does he not just turn around and kill them or just flat out ignore them if they pose no threat to him again

They do pose a threat? No animal in the real world can survive getting hit with missiles. The Japanese version has always been moronic for this reason, very much the "my version can beat up goku and superman" powerscale mentality on action. Like how dare they make the central character a realistic and vulnerable creature instead of an unstoppable monster who has to be killed with a magic formula at the end like in every other movie. How dare they try to add actual emotion and pathos to their movie

Yeah, that's a good comparison. This is like if you made a Superman movie where he could be killed by some dude with an AR-15. That shit wouldn't be considered a Superman movie either.

I like Beast from 20,000, but the general structure, plot and design of Godzilla 1998 are closer to Godzilla 1954 than 20,000 fathoms. If it had been called Beast from 20,000 fathoms, people would've called it a Godzilla rip-off, and Toho probably would've sued over the design.

It did well at the box office? And outside of online weirdos this was The godzilla in everybody's mind until the monsterverse version memory holed it. If you asked anyone in 98-2005 what godzilla looked like they would draw you a pic of 98. If you asked them what godzilla movie they had seen it would be that one. Simple as, a classic is a classic and no amount of retroactive "no true zilla" arguments from chronically autistic weebs will change that.
