A surprising amount of superheroes currently have this same arrangement where there's a black/gay/woman sharing the name while the original is still active at the same time. Both DC and Marvel arrived at this answer to the problem of "we want to replace white male hero with minority/woman but the original is too popular to get rid of"- just keep both.
