anon last night recommended me this. thank you to you, anon. the movie had some extremely comfy scenes and i enjoyed it overall. the ending rocked me though at the core and i was very upset... i wanted her to survive with him and live happily ever after
One of the movies that I'm convinced is "faux 2.35" which yes is my own term. I'm convinced this movie was shot with the intended purpose of being sown in 4:3 because there is an ungodly amount of wasted space in practically every shot.
massive redpill
Thank you. I'm convinced 2010 is another. Even the pan and scan is very suspicious to me. They used a type of it to mimic camera movement. One pan includes two different speeds. It starts at the normal speed and then slows down at the end. Cable tv was huge at the time of both of these movies so I think it was experimentation of how to deal with this new market. Home video however was actually still pretty new but also certainly still played a part.
I assume you're being sarcastic but can't really ever know here
never seen a de palma movie before huh?
I've seen pretty much all of them. And Blow Out's use of 2.39 is very suspicious to me compared to for example Scarface. In particular there was some hotel room scene as I recall in Blow Out that I just could not believe what I was looking at. Which was literally nothing. The character in the middle of the screen as I recall and just an entire screen's worth of wasted space on either side.
which point in this scene are you referring to out of curiosity? is it one of the closeups or?
That right there seems to be a pretty good example. Its been many years since I've seen it. But there is no way in hell this movie couldn't have easily been 1.85. Pure theater gimmick being 2.39. And then the best of both worlds. Center all the action generally speaking and it'll look great cropped on tv
interesting and I'm inclined to agree with your take on this
Thank you very much. I dont remember what any others were but this and 2010 are all I recall now.
any other interesting stuff you know about some movies?
Literally 80% of the movie is framed so that it would be totally ruined if it was cropped. There's many cool split screen kinda shots also utilizing the Panavision format to the max.
>ruined if it was cropped
not with pan and scan. That may have even had an interesting wipe effect that he wanted with the split screen.
but yeah maybe I'm remembering it wrong and he still just only sacrificed some shots integrity like
because he needed the aspect ratio for later. But as I recall I had all this in mind when I watched it.
Either way 2010 definitely does this so its definitely a concept around that time. So its not like I'm being unreasonably suspicious. There is an ungodly amount of wasted or barely used frame space in Blow Out
Do you know what else is possible? He actually just shot it the way he wanted and composed for widescreen without getting autistic about a little negative space here and there.
Meant to reply to your moronic ass
super cool split screen shot right there
moron.
You should maybe watch it again for like 10 seconds and realize how dumb that sounds
What a dumbass
and its not even 2.35 its 2.39
pure gimmick for the theaters nothing more
Might've been me. I too thought I would've liked a happy ending at first but the film wouldn't be nearly as memorable. It leaves you with profound sadness with that great score by Pino Donaggio
thank you anon. looking back on the movie in hindsight, i would have to agree with you that it wouldn't be as memorable. it's a sting that you never forget
if you have another suggestion for me i'll take it. to give you an idea of my tastes, the scene at the beginning where he witnesses the car going off the bridge is my favorite scene in the movie. i haven't seen a scene as comfy as that one maybe ever albeit i'm very new to Cinemaphile and watching movies in general
The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola is another great film involving sound recording/surveillance stuff. It has sorta similar vibes at times.
I saw it because Tarantino hyped it up. Film is okay. Not even great. Quentin’s fanboying over Travolta combined with a Director that he is the biggest fanboy of, and you get a clever ending but not necessarily much else.
what would you say is your top 5 movies?
I love the movie but does anyone else think it would've been better if Lithgow's character had been doing what he was told? I feel like it should have been a government backed hit rather than an agent gone rogue.
yeah I was a bit confused by that whole fiasko. I was expecting that as well instead of the rogue agent that I found to be doing shitty acting in the movie if I'm being completely honest
It adds another layer to John Litgow's character. He's not doing it just for political reasons but because of his sadistic and psychopathic impulses. It would be more boring if it was just a regular ol' hitman.
I love De Palma 70s and early 80s.
Extremely underrated film. Nothing quite like that recording scene outdoors. And that finale was just fantastic even if what led up to it, him crashing the car and then waking up and going after him, was kind of silly and unnecessary.
Yeah the parade scene was a bit bizarre, especially the music.
Blow Up (photo)
The Conversation (recording)
Blow Out (their unity in film)
It forms an intentional trilogy and the latter title is clearly a pun on the first.
