    >DC ends up taking the front of it because they didn't build a decade of films that zoomers get nostalgic for do to their catalogue being mostly shit past the nolan trilogy.
    >Marvel puts out cape-slop as well, with more releases per year than DC helping fuel cape-shit fatigue but have that nostalgic factor that at least keeps them relatively afloat.

Four posts in before someone said it. Why the hell would anyone care when the whole thing is getting rebooted in a year or two? There's no goodwill for DC movies like there was for Marvel leading into Endgame for anyone to see its last hurrah.

        >There's no goodwill for DC movies

        this pretty much nailed it

the whole DCEU began with a months-long public denial that tens of thousands of people were killed in the attack on Metropolis, even though huge buildings are leveled and debris rains into crowded streets and you never see any evidence of evacuations, not that a whole city that size could evacuate in minutes, and the obvious disconnect that Superman and Lois stand in the pulverized corpse-dust of their city and make out instead of doing something sane or relatable (and one of the VFX guys is apparently still making that argument ten years later because of Flash), then the very next movie in the sequence had Batman driving a tank over human beings and blasting them with guns "because they're bad guys", it's trite garbage that presents the same "I'm the good guy, back me" attitude everybody hated on Green Lantern a few years earlier

they backed the wrong horse, thinking it was about money, but the Marvel equivalent would have been building the MCU off the back of Incredible Hulk and keeping Norton around instead of RDJ because "murderhobos are relatable", then accusing anybody who complained of being a DCgay

Current DCEU was pretty dogshit and most people don't really care for B-listers like Blue Beetle and even the rest of the Justice League cast outside of Batman and Superman.
There's a reason despite how bad the DCEU was doing, The Joker and The Batman did well. Most people just don't care for the main universe baggage anymore even with big names attached to direct like James Gunn with the suicide squad.
DC would probably have more luck announcing another Watchmen film than selling anyone on another Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or Flash flick.

Exactly. Marvel waited until they setup all the main heroes they knew would sell tickets before they took chances on Rocket Racoon or Ant-Man. DC failed to set up a likeable Superman and Batman, so without them as pillars to hold the franchise up nobody was going to go see the smaller heroes.

You don't do the Avengers movie right out of the gate. You need to do one movie each for the three main characters, then you introduce the d-listers. Making a justice league movie the first movie is exactly the same mistake James Gunn is making with his new Superman movie.

They could start with a JL movie as long as they don't start with the team forming. Just start with the tower existing and the established hero friends fighting some planetary menace. Throw people into the action and let them catch up with the plot and character relationships as it goes.

                Anonymous

If you want to build up hype and get people onboard and emotionally invested you need to do the standalone movies first. It's not that hard to copy the MCU formula, but studios keep failing every time. Dark Universe. The DCEU. Even the X-Men movies didn't succeed as much as it could have because they were all team movies and occassionally a wolverine or deadpool movie.

                Anonymous

Disregard the standalone you start with an existing hero universe and have your first movie follow the newest member so the other characters showing the ropes will act as their introductions then you do their solo movies after the fact. Hell pitch a Jessica Cruz movie with her joining the league and trying to live up to Hal's accomplishments and then making her future solo movie a space centric flick about him being possessed by Parallax and the Lantern Corps working together to save him with shit like the manhunters getting thrown in.

Plus I don't want to see another movie about some fresh faced farm boy clark becoming a Jesus allegory so an ot her Lex can try to kill him just give me War World or Cyborg Superman.

                Anonymous

                >you start with an existing hero universe
Imagine if the first avengers movie came out without any of the context of the phase 1 mcu movies. You'd have to waste time explaining all these characters origin stories instead of getting to the action. Starting a DC universe where the superheroes already exist and already formed the league begs the questions will just cause the same problems. Sure you can skip over Batman and Supermans origin stories because everyone knows those guys because of pop culture osmosis. But nobody really knows Green Lantern or Hawkman or Power Girls origin stories. And fans want to see those stories told on the big screen in epic fashion. And if you skip all that and jump right to the first avengers movie without any setup, we'll never see those stories get their own movie.

Correction. Nobody wants to see another Superman and Batman origin story.
But you do need origin stories to establish why the character believes in his moral code and why he stands for truth justice and the american way.

                Anonymous

Then skip the team shit. Instead of introducing all these characters and teams. Simply focus the movie around your hero and have the universe as matter of fact.

Creeper is fighting crime in Gotham? Simply have Z or Batman appear in the back or be mentioned stopping XYZ event that the star can't reach.

Power girl is on the way to fight her villean? Why not show her stopping on the way to help Super Boy with a problem? 90s movies could do this and didn't need a solo for all of their heroes. Why can't DC? Let tests audiences react and go from there if the cameo char is worth pursuing.

I don't need a full movie for Creeper or Sandman, wiki would be plenty.

                Anonymous

                >Why can't DC?
Because it's DC and fans don't want any of the characters to be short changed by lack of screentime or proper character development by packing everyone into one movie. That and in a Superman movie Superman should be the main character and not be upstaged by Guy Gardener.

This would suck as a movie. Because its essentially movies centered around the audience being told Hal is the greatest thing since sliced bread without seeing it and the stand in you got is just showing how much they suck.

You need a breather where the GL is just doing their own thing and not just filling in footsteps. Or make the team movie less emphasis on being a rookie.

You don't need to be shown why the predecessor is legendary living in their shadow is just a character trait and an easy to use moment where the character becomes their own hero. That's one of the main early things for Jaime taking on Ted's mantle and the movie was shit for not doing it.

Superman is supposed to be the first Superhero. Having him show up in a universe where the Authority and Green Lantern are already a thing robs him of the respect the character should be given. I trust James Gunn to make a competently made movie. Marvel only did that because they had no choice. Their main draws (spider-man, hulk, x-men, etc) were in copyright knots. They pretty much had a gun to their head to use D-Z listers.

Big advantage on their side was that they actually planned shit and had the noviety of a connecting universe.

            >Big advantage on their side was that they actually planned shit and had the noviety of a connecting universe.
Marvel's "planning" has been massively exaggerated. It changed plans a bunch. Marvel's ultimate advantage is that it would course correct in a better way.
            >Recasting when necessary (Hulk/Warmachine).
            >Living up the the promise of building a team with the Avengers.
            >Consistency in still making sequels even after less well received movies.

WB/DC problem is that they tried course correcting after every movie because they were comparing their universe to the Marvel yard stick.
            >Expected Man of Steel to be better received, add in Batman.
            >Changed Suicide Squad several times through development and editing.
            >Etc.

Heck I would even say that Star Wars being shit is also because they chased being like the MCU and they have course corrected too much as well.
            >TLJ divisive.
            >Solo bombs.
            >Bob Iger blames Star Wars fatigue (notice how Bob is now blaming Superhero fatigue for Marvel?)
            >Cancels Boba Fett movie and Obi Wan movie.
            >Brings back JJ.

Like Barbenheimer, sometimes you can just generate so much buzz that it hardly even matters what it's about. And the Joker is the single most reliable IP that WB owns.

Barbenheimer, like Teh Joker, became an event that you felt everyone else was going to experience, and you'd be left out of "it" if you didn't also go see it.

Everything DC does is a reaction to the MCU.

      >Iron Man
Make Green Lantern and Man of Steel as starts to their cinematic universe within 2 years of each other
      >The Avengers
Make Batman v Superman in an attempt to catch up, fail horribly
      >Captain America
Make Wonder Woman but it doesn't take place in WWII because Cap already beat you to it. Also give her a shield
      >Guardians of the Galaxy
Make Suicide Squad as your obscure edgy superhero team-up, does well but is so terrible it taints it's sequels (Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam)
      >Infinity War/Endgame
Attempt to beat Marvel to it's cosmic showdown with Justice League and incorporating Darkseid before Thanos makes his true debut, fails horribly and people now see Darkseid as discount-Thanos when it's the other way around
      >Thor Ragnarok
Make Aquaman a lot lighter and comedic culture clashes, actually works out for once but was likely a fluke due to Chinabux
      >Deadpool 1 & 2
Make Birds of Prey, don't follow the comics at all and just make an ugly man-hatred movie instead of a funny comic, epically flops
      >Spider-Man No Way Home
Make The Flash in an attempt to cash in on nostalgia for old capeshit, not only fails horribly but is extra embarrassing from both Zaslav and Gunn calling it "the best superhero movie ever"
      >Black Panther
Made Blue Beetle, possibly just for the naming schemes being similar because that's how pathetic DC is

        Anonymous

Blue Beetle really didn't feel like Black Panther at all. Black Panther reeks of the "WE WUZ KANGS" meme and spotlights this false view of Africa that a lot of people hold. Blue Beetle never hits those same beats. It features Mexican pop culture in the same way an American movie would reference American pop culture, and it never really props the race itself up in any way that feels like pandering. The marketing tried to tap into the Mexican movie but honestly every fricking movie does this now. They pander to this singular demographic and fellates them as if they're special. But I do agree with the rest of your points.

Do you remember how WB planned to make Amanda Waller into Fury for the universe Green Lantern was supposed to launch? They were so desperate to have THAT character because Marvel had it so they needed it too.

Black Panther sold well due to everyone being infatuated by the MCU. How it all connected together. But no one cares about Black Panther independently. Wait ten years and do a solo isolated Black Panther movie and it will fail. Very few Marvel characters can genuinely carry their own movies without the connected MCU novelty. Maybe Iron Man is the only character who he alone rose to prominence from this entire thing. Captain America? No one cares anymore about him.

    >$128m worldwide
i get that people will shit on this, but this was going to be an hbo max movie that would have made $0. the only reason it was tossed in theaters at all was to make a little bit of money instead of nothing.

At at $105 million budget and considering the cut movie theaters get from ticket prices, it still lost money

        Anonymous

it lost less money than if it were dumped on hbo max. that's the point i'm trying to make. they aren't trying to make as much money as they can, they are trying to lose as little as possible. if they dumped it on hbo max they lost $100 million, but they slapped it in theaters and what scraps they made dropped the loss down to $50 million.

Definitely cancel any attempts at an internally cohesive cinematic universe. Probably sell or lease the film rights for every character who isn't Batman or Batman adjacent to another studio in exchange for a percentage of the profits.

Same, it was a fun family movie. I watched it alone but it absolutely was the sort of film that four generations + extended of family would enjoy watching together crammed into the family room sitting on the sofas, floor and chairs from the kitchen. I expect that it'll do absurdly well on streaming for years to come

    Marvel worked because:
    >Actors that fit the character, strong characterisation.
    >Action and humour.
    >Mediocre plot/villain.
    >Gimmicks and promise of more.
Now it didn't have to have characters exactly like the comics or anything major.

    DCEU:
    >Actors are barely given anything to work with.
    >Action all over the place.
    >Bad plot and villains.
    >No real promise.

Frick it isn't rocket science. People can talk about origin stories or building up or this or that. But you just need a balance of a few things and that is it. Chiefly you need a character that feels like they are someone. When you go outside of the balance you get Marvel shit that is overly comedic that you can't take anything seriously (Thor: Love and Thunder shit) or DC movies that drag on with their own sense of self importance (BvS). You don't need Batman or Superman pulling quips to be successful.

A Batman cinematic universe based on the Matt Reeves movies is whats going to keep DC from truly dying. Because he makes so much more money in comparison to the other characters. Which sadly means every other character in the DC universe is never going to ever be given the same sort of respect or time or money investment.
There will always be another good Batman movie coming. There will probably never be a good live action Titans or another Superman movie.
