During a flashback episode it's revealed he used to have some sort of running partner, maybe a wife or girlfriend or sister, but someone he used to run with. During the last minute of the season finale, this runner says to Bojack >It gets easier
This entire background story of the runner with a dead lover/relative pays off in that when this older guy tells the main character it gets easier, you can believe him because it's implied he's gone through it too. Things like that help shape the uniqueness of this show.

Five years after getting off that garbage my life has turned around completely. The first few weeks were a terror as I was jolted in the brain and hands by the worst withdrawal syndrome I've ever experienced, like an electric current. Then I started walking. And then jogging. And then lifting. Daily. All of a sudden I got confidence and wanted to socialize. My friends returned. I now have a young child, a fiancee, great job, house, car, dog, and the respect of my peers. All of this would have been unimaginable had I stayed on those disgusting, vile pills. It's fricking mind poison.

Bojack is my favorite show but I actually really disliked this part of the show. Guy began dating Diane when she was thin, I wanted to see how the sudden weight gain would have affected his attraction towards her, but the show didn't do that. To be fair maybe he liked her fat.

Sure the feelings and actions of the characters should remind us of ourselves, but they shouldn't be the same shit. You can root for Superman or Ironman even though none of us will ever be in fights with intergalactic aliens. We can relate because we too have been in tough conflicts that we need to overcome through willpower, pain, and a lot of heart.
My point is that I hate modern fiction writing. Bojack is my favorite show but I actually really disliked this part of the show. Guy began dating Diane when she was thin, I wanted to see how the sudden weight gain would have affected his attraction towards her, but the show didn't do that. To be fair maybe he liked her fat.

Show should have ended after Season 4 - it had a bittersweet ending that hinted at some degree of redemption without being schmaltzy. Seasons 5 and 6 involve the writers contriving new problems for the characters, which feel very tacked-on.

Tv that tries to make characters as realistic as possible is bad TV. What you want is BELIEVABLE characters. Maintaining the suspension of disbelief doesn't mean every character has to be a 1:1 copy of some boring gay from real life. Your characters should at all times be larger than life because fiction is primarily about escapism. Sure the feelings and actions of the characters should remind us of ourselves, but they shouldn't be the same shit. You can root for Superman or Ironman even though none of us will ever be in fights with intergalactic aliens. We can relate because we too have been in tough conflicts that we need to overcome through willpower, pain, and a lot of heart.
My point is that I hate modern fiction writing. It's all about taking SJW mouth piece carbon copies of the SJW writers and throwing them into a CGI environment or some mundane place like a hospital or a college campus and they just do normal shit. Because the point of a lot of this garbage is to be propaganda, not to help the consumer escape their own reality for a bit and be immersed in a different world, whether the tone be comedic, scary, action-oriented, drama, adventure etc. So when I see people praise this shitty specific "omg the character is exactly like what a real mentally ill fatass drug addict would be" it pisses me off. WHERE'S THE BLOODY JOKES
I never liked Bojack. None of the characters are likable, none of the jokes made me laugh and it was so far up its own ass with the philosophical musing of their trauma. However, I really enjoyed the episodes exploring how Bojacks mon grew up and how that shaped Bojack. A great example of generational trauma.
