it was pretty cool. we need more movies about white collar rebellion. the office environment is even more soul-crushing now than in 1999 since it's full of bitter roasties.

That's offset by having access to smartphones to distract yourself. I probably work two hours and spend the other six on my phone shitposting or watching YouTube (like I'm doing now). The office environment of the 90s-00s must have been downright hellish in terms of boredom alone.

i've worked in a secure office where phones aren't allowed, you just spend all day shooting the shit with your coworkers and fooling around

Gen X here, I recall having more fun on flash games and having CS matches with coworkers than endlessly scrolling shitty tiktoks.

I wish we could go back to comfy cubicles. Right now it'd big empty spaces where you sit with 20 people, you can look everyone in the eye and everyone sees your monitor. Take me back to comfy 90's office job please

Everyone should be "working" from home. Let's face it, you're likely not providing much value. Why do you need to be in an office?

Not exactly. I thought it was chuckleworthy. Fun little relatable injoke. I always had a better job than these guys though, more agency/room to work on projects at my own pace for decent pay. However, I do have to say I did find the ending inspiration. I like that it opened up the idea that maybe some people WOULD be happier with "regular" jobs outdoors. It inspired me to start working with my hands, building some simple furniture as a hobby and getting back into regular camping. Thanks, Mike Judge.

These people will never understand. They want to waste their lives away on hedonic diversions. The concept of willingly taking on responsibility and challenging tasks fills them with terror. To them, mere subsistence is sufficient, if it demands nothing of them.

There's an old image that comes to mind. A knight in the middle ages is riding a horse through the wind and rain, and comes across a group of men hauling large stone blocks through the mud. He approaches one, a scowling man spitting curses as he tugs at his load, and asks "What is it you're doing?" "What does it look like I'm doing", the man snarls, "I'm hauling this damned stone through the mud." The knight then rides up to another man, doing the same thing, but with a beatific expression on his face, his eyes fixed heavenward in contentment as he nonetheless drags his unbearably heavy load. The knight asks "What is it you're doing?" and the man replies, "We are building a cathedral."

How does that image correlate with people wanting to waste their lives on hedonistic diversions

The character in this film is deeply unfulfilled, despite having his physical needs met. "Man cannot live by bread alone", you've doubtless heard before. His spiritual, intellectual, creative needs are not being met. His work isn't challenging him, it's mere drudgery. So he's unhappy to the point of being miserable, despite the fact he gets paid for doing nothing. It's a very understandable and human condition. Most people inevitably end up feeling this way when their abilities aren't being put to use, when the time they spend "working" is perceived as ultimately meaningless. People who fear responsibility and want to live hedonically, however, find his attitude perplexing and incongruously envy his ability to merely exist as a lump without striving for responsibility or meaningful work that serves a higher creative purpose. They have unfortunately come to view responsibility of any sort as a burden, when in fact, when well-placed, it is a blessing.

That makes perfect sense to me. If you give into nihilism, your views on concepts like "effort" are altered, without realizing that by succumbing to demoralization, you are serving as part of the problem

Doing nothing while trying to always look busy is a pretty miserable existence when you dont have any distractions. It's a hard concept to imagine for those who grew up on smartphones.
