Its mostly RNG, yeah. You have to be in the sweet spot of being dumb/crazy enough to want to kill people and being smart enough to not be completely moronic, and then have a lot of luck. I mean, frame that as the narrative of the novel the engineer is reading and sketch out alternative variants of the story to represent a recursive function navagating a binary search tree and you have a solid pomo conceit for a story.
