They could have stuck to the game's story where the impact of loss/grief and how it's handled is tied explicitly to Joel and how he's been handling his loss, and allow Bill's presence to give Joel and Ellie some space while still in the initial phases of their bond. It worked fantastically in the game.
Instead we get an hour of irrelevant shit that completely and utterly ruins the pacing of the relationship with the two main characters.

Yeah that's the problem. In a limited run time series they dedicated an entire, extra long episode to the backstory of two minor characters that didn't even end up showing up in the main plotline at all. Any of Bill's interactions with Ellie was thrown out the fricking window for it.

We go from the first two episodes establishing the connection between the two, only for it to come to a grinding halt when we spend an hour watching a story that ends with ZERO IMPACT ON THE PRIMARY CHARACTERS
They could have stuck to the game's story where the impact of loss/grief and how it's handled is tied explicitly to Joel and how he's been handling his loss, and allow Bill's presence to give Joel and Ellie some space while still in the initial phases of their bond. It worked fantastically in the game.
Instead we get an hour of irrelevant shit that completely and utterly ruins the pacing of the relationship with the two main characters.
It was a terrible episode and anyone who defends it is a fricking moron.

Yeah that's the problem. In a limited run time series they dedicated an entire, extra long episode to the backstory of two minor characters that didn't even end up showing up in the main plotline at all. Any of Bill's interactions with Ellie was thrown out the fricking window for it.
All of this was because Neil had to "make up" for the way the characters were portrayed in the game, because people got pissy the gay couple was shown to be extremely dysfunctional and ended with one character dead and the other lonely and resentful, which was far more realistic than the moronic bittersweet bullshit the show gave us. Being award bait probably didn't hurt either.
So yeah, them being gay was entirely why the episode was made in the first place and was so long, despite what nick waffles about.
