Season 3 is probably my favorite overall, it's really fun and everything is basically in place.
Without a doubt Willow she is the best Scooby by far and the only one who is effective without Buffy.

Evil Spike/Dru/Angel wad probably the peak for the villains of the show, it's a shame it didn't last longer.

People hate change. I didn't appreciate season 4 at the time. I liked it, but it got better on re watch many years later.

Because the main story arc is bad and Riley is a wet noodle. But they seem to forget that season 4 is filled with funny and highly memorable monster-of-the-week episodes, probably the best ones of any season.

Riley was more of a plot device than a character. He was there to get Buffy to start questioning her influence on other people.

That's the least of it,.but still a sore spot for a lot of fans due to how it was handled. Riley and the initiative are the biggest reasons most fans checked out. They wanted Buff with Angel and Riley was a cardboard cutout masquerading ad a college student. I know what they were going for: Captain America aw.shucks, ma'am mixed the charm of Clark Kent's farm boy, but that actor was too wooden to really be charming. He was so boring they tried to edge him up by giving him a vamp addiction but no one cared.

It was a mistake. Eliza could've carried a new slayer show easily, and Faith is extremely well liked. They were working on a reboot with a black Buffy, bit after people pointed out that Kendra is RIGHT there, to stop race swapping the then show runner came out on Twitter and said something to the effect of
      >You're right - It's time for a new slayer
Blah blah, and then the expose came out on Joss and that's the last anyone heard from it. That was years ago now. I think Buffy stuff will be dead for a while since Joss is so linked to it.

          >His wife(Ex now)put him on blast and said he acts like a big ol' feminist but he's anything but
There's a hell of a lot more and Joss admits to all of it, and some of the things he says in the interview I guess he thought would make him seem relatable but he just comes off like a manipulating psychopath with extreme confidence issues.

How does Buffy compare to Firefly?

      Anonymous

Buffy is super campy and light hearted half the time. It's more or less the bridge between Hercules/Xena and shows like Supernatural and Chilling Tales of Sabrina. Firefly is a lot less light hearted and more or less a passion project combining Japanese Scifi westerns and Lost Cause Americana.

        Anonymous

Very inspired by things like Bebop and Outlaw Star as well. I think if Firefly had been allowed to continue it would've outstripped Buffy and Angel. As is, I think the highs of Buffy are the best of both, but Angel was more consistently good.

      Anonymous

I just finished the 9th episode of Firefly, I've been taking my time with it because it only has 14 episodes. Maybe one or two whole lines of cringey Joss Whedon dialogue and I love the characters. Buffy still has to be better just because of how many more seasons it got. How is the movie Serenity?

Early buffy is pretty hard to beat. Even the throw away monster of the week eps are stellar. One of my personal favorites being Ted. John Ritter just elevates anything he's in.
    >Do you want me to slap that smart ass mouth of yours
    >Who wants cookies?!
But like most long running shows it devolves in to something pretty bad. Willow acting like she's always been a lesbian really bothered me, it shit all over the memory of her and Oz and the fans that loved it. Also, the girl they chose to out her with is such an awful actress. She had one gear: Look like you're going to puke and call it acting. She'd be the worst character on the show if Kennedy hadn't shown up in the final hour and legit raped Willow. Like, actually forced herself on her and it's played as lovely. The later seasons still have some absolute bangers like Hush and Once More With Feeling, but the only real reason to watch after Glory is killed(The last good Big Bad)is Dawns tight tween ass.

Willow became a lesbian after Xander fricked another girl, and got molested by herself.
What did they mean by this

        Anonymous

I didn't even mind them making Willow bi, but that's not what they did at all. They memory holed Oz and acted like Willow was ALWAYS gay, and they'd have her bring it up as much as they could
        >Hello! GAY!
        *Willow points to self*
That kind of shit infuriates me. It was also when I first realized that they'll allow a character to go gay, but never back the other way. I know Xander was supposed to be the one they made gay, and Buff was even talked about at one point, which given the closeness of her and Faith was RIGHT there. morons.

          Anonymous

It was a mixture of them being scared it would be recieved as her being "cured" of gayness and going back to guys. It's funny to say now but people legit flipped shit about bisexuals in the 90's and early 00s the same way as they do about non binary people now.

The studio was totally against them making anyone gay or bi and the writing crew had to warm them up to it. Bisexuality was out of the question so they retconned Willow into being gay. It's ridiculous and the writers all stand by the idea that if it came out now she would just be bi.

I love Alyson Hannigan she was great on Buffy and How I Met Your Mother

            >the same way as they do about non binary people now
That's made up though. Bisexuality is a very real thing. I had a parent at school tell me after seeing the ep where Willow blows the candle out with Tara
            >We will NOT be watching that anymore as a family
But the vast majority of people I talked to were only mad cause she fricked Oz over and Tara was a drooling moron.

              Anonymous

Anon trust me in the 90s and early 00s they said the same shit.
Bisexuality is a fad no one really is this
              It's just a phase
If you frick dudes and are male you are gay not bi
              Ect
This shit happens every decade and a half now, we went through a long moral panic in the early 00s too and before that it as the original gay hysteria/satanic panic of the 70s and 80s.

                Anonymous

I grew up then and I know what you mean, I just don't think comparing it to something like non-binary helps. That shit isn't real. It's a made up term to go along with all of the other made up terms that bored white women in colleges have made up. Regardless, Buffy should've been with Faith. At the very least put Willow with a girl whilst also acknowledging a fan favorite character that was part of the original gang. I'm still mad about after all these years. I still dislike Tara and I remember the day she was shot my cousin called me and said
                >Well, are you doing a jig yet
At least later seasons gave us Anya, who turned out to be an even better character than Xander as time went on and they didn't know what to do with him.

non-binary is binary opposite to the other woke shit. it's very clever ruse.

Yeah Anya is the only thing that makes Xander tolerable.
Going back in I honestly didn't remember that much and at first thought that they were going to make him into an Evil Dead Ash esque character, I wasn't expecting him to become increasingly out of place and sucky.

Spike was supposed to be a one off character. Audiences responded to him so much though that instead of killing him off like Joss intended, the network mandated him to stay. At least they did a good job with Spike he is genuinely charming and grows on you hard throughout seasons 4 and 5. I didn't remember the early seasons that well so I really enjoyed when he shows up as a badass with Dru in season 2.

Yeah, the William The Bloody stuff. I think so. Doesn't matter though, cause when you make a vampire so cool that your audience is rooting for him, while also giving him a past where he's killed two slayers and tortured people with railroad spikes, giving him a soft boy past doesn't matter. Just makes him even cooler if anything.

It's hilarious. Spike consistently stays at the top of people lists. Marsters owned it. He just made him great no matter the storyline. He added things during scenes that apparently weren't part of the script either: Like when he tears off to Buffys house with a sawed off shotgun with every intention of killing her, he finds her vulnerable and weeping. The script called for him to just sit there in silence, but he made the decision to slowly put his hand on her like a wounded animal. A monster with no soul that remembered what it used to be like being a man. Great fricking scene.

So Buffy had Spike that was a charismatic shithead villain that everybody loved, and they killed his character on purpose.
And DS9 had Dukat that was a charismatic shithead villain that everybody loved, and they killed his character on purpose.

Eh, it undermined his sacrifice in the Buffy finale, his reasoning for not leaving to go after the love of his life is spurious, and his personality/behavior is like a one-dimensional parody of who he was in Buffy. He had his moments, but he was basically just comic relief.

                But we know better now

It was a mixture of them being scared it would be recieved as her being "cured" of gayness and going back to guys. It's funny to say now but people legit flipped shit about bisexuals in the 90's and early 00s the same way as they do about non binary people now.

The studio was totally against them making anyone gay or bi and the writing crew had to warm them up to it. Bisexuality was out of the question so they retconned Willow into being gay. It's ridiculous and the writers all stand by the idea that if it came out now she would just be bi.

Millenials are aging out of Cinemaphile.
Plus Buffy is a show with a female lead and arguably the second most important character is Willow a "lesbian" (bi) witch.

He might be referring to "traditional/catholic" or "nuclear family" values, which is now counter culture and thus is more prevalent on Cinemaphile than other internet outlets. I don't think anyone dislikes when girls kiss girls though

I think his suggestion that simply because it's female led it would be hated is moronic as well. Current shows are just so shit that if they're female led, you know exactly what that means. Zero character development. Zero struggle. Etc. Buffy resonated with boys/men and girls/women alike. Modern writers just don't know how to write a female character.

While season 1 is enjoyable season 2 on is solid
2&3 are peak classic buffy 4-6 are also great.

              >Ted

Agreed, it's honestly shocking how much information they drop in the one offs as well. The John Ritter episode is wild, I totally forgot about it so it w as s a nice surprise.

I loved it immediately. Especially the slow mo scene where the pack is walking up the hill while Job's Eyes plays. That's back when the music was just as important to Buffy as the cast and the script was. They should've never have moved away from the Bronze and showcasing up and coming or underground music. I always watched early Buff with a notepad out for when the WB guy would say

He's mostly used for comic relief in the comics., which is a pity. Outside of a few series, the comics are not very good at all. The Angel/Faith spinoff was nice though. They rebooted Buffy in comic form a few years ago, those weren't very good either but better than the original comics. Naturally, a young version of Robin Wood was a student at Sunnydale high and Buffy's love interest.

Dracula could have replaced Adam in season 4 or the trio in season 6. In the fourth season, the theme could have been that Buffy was overwhelmed by the pressure of college and was an easy target for Dracula's influence, prompting greater involvement from the gang to save her. Stretch the thralldom of Buffy and Xander out of several episodes.

In season 6, a depressed Buffy could easily have turned into a dark Buffy under his influence. Dark Buffy would have been better than Dark Willow imho.

The red-haired israeliteess you consort with, is more dangerous than we both realised. I fear that one day, she will bring a great doom upon the realm of California. I know Willow is your friend, but for the good of the kingdom, she must die, Buffy - and you must be the one to slay her. We cannot allow magic to further corrupt our efforts against the darkness. Oh, and beware of the village idiot Xander. I fear that oaf's childhood friendship and devotion to the sorceress far outstrips any hormonal feelings he may have for you. Seasons 1-3 are still a lot of fun, doesn't take itself too seriously yet. Watched it again early this year and holy shit the quality tanking from seasons 3 to 4 is worse than I remembered. The show is not good at handling serious issues like it thinks it is. It comes off insanely farcical, and having her complain about her life as a college student just doesn't work as well as a high schooler.
