if you want an unironic answer, xenomorph nutrition is a hotly debated topic but generally speaking the script originally had a scene where the crew would find their rations broken into and devoured after hearing thumping from the walls. alternatively, given that the creatures are explicitly made of (at least partial) non-organic components due to their metallic layer and acidic blood, it is possible that they can derive nutrition and molecular building blocks from the walls of the ship, melting through objects to eat metal like some overgrown fly. another explanation could be that they don't need to eat at all: their acidic blood could double as both a defense mechanism and a natural method of producing a battery force in their bodies, sort of like battery acid. one third idea was that they eat through their little mouth when headbiting, though personally i find that unlikely since pharyngeal jaws don't work that way.

ultimately, although the comics directly state that xenomorphs can and do eat flesh (and that even in certain conditions can starve, as shown both in Dr. Church's experiments with xenomorphs eating pig meat and Music of the Spears showing Mozart eating dogs, cats, and even a panther), it is debateable whether they need to eat meat, or anything at all. notably the original concept for the xenomorph was that of a creature that lived for only a few days (and was genuinely intelligent to the point where they cut out a line from Ash asking the crew if they even tried talking to it). the idea was that its darkening hide and black sheen was meant to indicate age, and that near the end of the film, it had hid itself away in a hole in order to die in peace. going off by that, it is possible that it didn't eat anything at all, and instead burned all of its energy just killing things in fear before choosing a quiet place to die. this makes sense only if you hold ALIEN in isolation as a solo movie, but is definitely interesting.

    good question op.

Xeno was never fast in the movie. Not once. It's actually pathetically silly looking in ever scene. Regardless, they had the idea the xeno only lives a very short time and was dying.

the beast is shown to be weirdly intelligent. it was actually the actor Bolaji Badejo's decision to make it move slowly and uncannily, as he felt it made it seem more threatening and foreign. in alien isolation, the xenomorph is also shown to swap between fierce speed and disturbing serenity.

maybe it is just conserving energy? or maybe it is genuinely relishing in its opponent's terror? sort of like a serial killer, waiting to be spotted just so its prey dies knowing it was going to die.

yeah, it's more interesting to think of them like that.
its easy to write them off as dumb bugs due to some later works, but all things considered they are very smart creatures. even going against marines equipped with weapons short of boltors they still managed to win.

i like to think that they employ rush tactics when they outnumber targets, simply because at that point they can probably reclaim any injured or dying xenos from the skirmish and then either regenerate them or repurpose them into more foodstuff. when in smaller numbers or alone, they act more tactically, and delight in their target's suffering. gotta love what you do i guess.

They were proven very smart in Aliens. They took out the drop ship easily. And going up against the remote sentries, they tactically retreated, found another way around, then curbstomped the marines.

                Anonymous

                yeah, they were incredibly smart.
the one and only "problem" i have with that film is the extended turret scene added in on later versions. personally, i think them throwing themselves at the turret isn't really wise and i get why it was originally cut. of course, you could see it as the xenos knowingly injuring and killing their own to burn the marine's resources (before just scavenging the survivors and repurposing the remains) but it still hits less than the original's retreat and tactical ambush.

Eh, I just see it as the creatures having no idea they aren't fighting humans and instead fighting robots that don't have fear. When they decided they were taking too many losses and it wasn't worthwhile, they pulled back to assess, and found a way around. The xenos shouldn't have knowledge of things they've never encountered before like machine gun turrets

It's a perfect organism so growing huge really fast is just an advantage. They grow fast and eat oxygen molecules constantly through their pores.

Also, you know how they have acid blood, the universe is smart and this organism has acid blood and in the natural world in earth there are many small things that are poisonous or dangerous to eat so bigger predators won't eat them. That means in the anileb universe the aliens have natural predators that are big enough to eat them somewhere out there. They should.make a movie where they find a planet of the aliens natural enemies that are giant bastards that chase and eat aliens like a cat does a mouse

in the comics there was a xenomorph "home world" although it was really just a random planet that had xenomorphs for so long that they were integrated into the ecosystem IIRC.
on that planet there were several creatures that would compete with xenomorphs, often killing and eating them.
personally i doubt xenomorphs naturally evolved, or if they did their evolution was so violently successful that any traits developed against old predators are now only kept out of genetic purity rather than need, since the damn things probably killed their predators long ago. still, they did have predators (and in a sense Predators since they were hunted for sport) on that planet.

frankly the thing might not even follow real-world constraints. ridley scott has gone on record to say that they can literally regenerate from their DNA, although i think that's genuinely fricking dumb. a xenomorph regenerating having its lower half blown off or arm cut off makes sense, even if it takes some time, but ridley has sort of gone off the deep end in recent years.

Scott's opinion on the xenos doesn't matter. No one bases anything on his movie Alien and certainly not Prometheus. Everyone considers the xenos as those from Aliens as that is the movie that popularized the franchise and kept it running with games/comics/toys based directly off of its depictions. Not Alien.

          Anonymous

i mean i disagree with you on alien but yeah prometheus was pretty lame.
i don't hate it, but the additions made are very strange. it seems to want to imply david is the creator of the xenomorph, and yet it backtracks constantly to say that he just rediscovers them. it says it is in the alien universe yet shares none of the artstyle. it emphasizes the engineers being like gods but makes them act like cavemen.

the black goo is a neat idea, but numerous concepts for it (such as the beluga mutant) ended up being cut or changed.

personally i think adding concrete origins for the creature messes with it, and there are so many more interesting angles to take. not to mention, ridley scott literally believes aliens seeded earth so prometheus feels like him projecting his own personal views onto the franchise. he can do whatever he wants but why not make it a solo movie?

it won't let me post the belugaxeno concept art

yeah, the movie cutting that out and not doing anything to even make up for it was dumb (though I think that script may have been faked? i remember a scandal involved). even so, the film should definitely have posed some more definite answers or alternatively been way more esoteric. instead its just middle of the road lame.

Eh, I just see it as the creatures having no idea they aren't fighting humans and instead fighting robots that don't have fear. When they decided they were taking too many losses and it wasn't worthwhile, they pulled back to assess, and found a way around. that is a fair assessment, and the creatures are shown to learn quickly. i mean, the queen literally uses an elevator at the end.
some people like to think of them as having massive hive minds and genetic memory but i'm not sure whether that's a good idea or not. maybe if executed correctly.

                >i remember a scandal involved).
They deleted the scene because making references to Christianism was a big no no in China and muslim countries. Ever since Alien 3 Fox has been fricking up the franchise

i found it, the scandal was that the leaked script was faked by a user on avpgalaxy.net. here's an archived link
                https://web.archive.org/web/20130423235506/http://www.prometheus2-movie.com/news/384

it is possible that overt references to religion would have been seen as controversial, however, both to those who do and do not practice those religions. implying that 1. christianity is the only true religion and 2. christianity isn't even real and is a front for aliens would have definitely ruffled some feathers for both the audiences and producers.

personally i just think the concept is dumb. ancient aliens is rarely ever done well and tying it so poorly to the alien franchise was a mistake. even with fox's mismanagement i can't blame them for trusting ridley scott in the first place.

                >of course, that's analyzing it through an overtly sexual lens and it isn't my personal take, but the stuff is there. i think categorizing it as a rapist is definitely accurate,
And then AvP throws all subtlety out of the window and makes Predalien straight up impregnate women on their bellies instead of the chest

yeah, that scene is just gross. shame since the avp comics can actually be quite good.
i still think the first film is not terrible but whoever forced it to not have an R rating has to be summarily executed. it could've been pretty great, if dumb fun.
this is unrelated but i also think predator 2 is pretty underrated.

interestingly, the xenomorph's connection to rape is actually pretty integral to its existence. plenty of people have analyzed the film through a sexual lens, but IMO when looking at it through such an interpretation the xenomorph is both female in importance and life-creating, as well as incredibly male in terms of its domination and rape-like tendencies.
i mean, the thing emerges from a dude after he gets raped in the mouth, its attacks are deliberate and slow as it catches people in the dark and attacks them in almost sexual ways. i'd say it could be best compared to an uber-male outlook, a creature that literally sees everything around it as prey to kill, eat, and rape.

of course, that's analyzing it through an overtly sexual lens and it isn't my personal take, but the stuff is there. i think categorizing it as a rapist is definitely accurate, down to the visceral level.
