I was reading some conversations about this recently and apparently beauty standards don't exist for men because 1 in 100000 women will date short/ugly/etc guys so that means they should have no trouble finding someone. Also they said that men only care because it means they can't get laid but when women complain about beauty standards it's different because reasons.

        Anonymous

It's true that mens beauty standards are different because looks aren't as important to them when it comes to finding a partner. Men absolutely do have beauty standards though, there's just many different archetypes that women can find attractive so it's hard to pin down the standard. What women want is to also have that be the case for them. The "challenge" is to see if you would be attracted to someone that's not a top 1% tier model or trying to look like one.

There's actually very little stated justification of anything these people ever do, they seem to be working within a framework of what they've been told is acceptable amicable to do, it's no wonder that they think they can change anyone's mind if they think what is authoritatively pushed will also be accepted just like how they completely uncritically accepted the gobbledy asiatic that was touted at them in college.

That an angle that doesn't really see much scrutiny. "We were challenging beauty standards". That can only mean a few different things. And this woman isn't fat. Her eyes are the right distance apart. And her complexion isn't that dark. So, there's only really one thing left.

it's pretty obvious that you'll get better results with a small group of people who have high morale and unit cohesion, and are pulling towards the same goal and feel that the success of the others is their own success and vice versa
You can see this in shows that are genuinely well-written and have talented writers willing to credulously and seriously explore ideas, avenues, and possibilities (behind the scenes stuff from Deadwood or The Shield shows this in spades).
        the problem with shit like

        So powerful
This will teach capitalism a lesson

is that they're all decidedly unskilled, untalented, poorly read, and do not even have 'faithfully adapt the material' as a goal at all. To them, the show is a vehicle to vomit out their politics onto the audience and congratulate themselves for it

They're saying that most of what we consider conventionally attractive is based on predominantly white traits. That we only think this way because of what's normally shown through media. Showing a non white that's attractive without these traits shows that what we consider as beauty isn't set in stone.

        Anonymous

But she meets European beauty standards. She's conventionally hot. The only difference betwee her and a pretty white girl is skin color.

I'm no beauty expert so I won't speak on whether or not they actually achieved what they set out to do, but there's plenty of homosexuals in this thread who have pointed out her traits that aren't conventionally beautiful.

Not saying they're the judge of beauty. homosexuals are good at seeing the subtle shit that men don't notice or even care about. Shit like the traits that makes someone conventionally beautiful. If you just see her as obviously beautiful despite her lacking these traits then the "challenge on conventional beauty" is a success.

we consider white traits, whatever it means, attractive because they are.
Showing unattractive people of any color won't make them attractive.
Btw, if a black, indian, whatever person shares traits with whites, by definition they aren't "white traits", but good looking traits

        Anonymous

NO. Humans have an built-in understanding of what is and what isn't attractive, and this has been the case long before film and tv ever existed. Until recently, film and tv castings have reflected this understanding, not the other way around. These mid chicks need to get the frick over that fact that they are mid. Putting mid chicks on screen doesn't suddenly make them more attractive.

Because most of the things are how they are becasue they work that way, and will never be replaced by something better. No wheel will ever work better than a round one.
The act of dismantling standards is most of the time a dismantling for the safe of it, with no plan B for what comes next.
"Forward", especially in these cases, is an arbitrarily decided direction called that way by few. Who decided that "forward" goes there?

        >most of the things are how they are because they work that way, and will never be replaced by something better
Self defeating mindset that inherently rejects progress. If you truly believed this then you'd also believe that most of life is great how it is with no way of it getting better.

When I say challenge it don't mean reinventing the wheel, it's more like finding a better wheel. In this case it's about revealing there's multiple wheels for you to pick through at any given moment.

          Anonymous

your better wheel is always going to look like a wheel
          >no! in this arficial environment I can make a square wheel that fits the exactly machined terrain better!
ok sure. environment changes, ideals change. but unless the environment changes that's not gonna happen. if you're saying that beauty standards need to change, what you're saying is that society needs to change. which *is* the argument, isn't it? shit like body positivity is literally about promoting objective unhealth as a good thing. that's what "changing beauty standards" means. they want you to find disgusting, unhealthy, self-destructive things attractive. because they are unhealthy self-destructive (and destructive of those they interact with) people. and they want you to find them attractive.

if you accept their arguments you're literally braindead.
like, I read fricking articles about paradise lost, and how people are capable of reading that and coming out of it thinking that satan was the good guy, because they just outright believed his lies, even though they're sitting outside the text so they know 100% that they're lies, yet they fall for them anyway based on the rhetoric alone. that's how fricking stupid you are if you accept these "changing beauty standards" arguments. but I guess it puts you in good company. or should I say """good""" company.

            >Modern European beauty ideals are as fundamental to nature as wheels are to physics
Seems unlikely. Just in my lifetime I've seen big asses go from hated to loved. Plump women used to be the European ideal, then it was sticks, now it's somewhere in between. I doubt we just now happened to land on the objectively correct wheels which will never change.

I think youre confused on what I said despite me literally saying nobody's trying to reinvent the wheel. We don't use the same wheels today than we did back then right? We made it better and created different wheels for different tasks. The point of challenging beauty standards is to show there's multiple ways to find someone attractive.

              >The point of challenging beauty standards is to show there's multiple ways to find someone attractive.
there are multiple way to be 10/10s, but anything less than 10/10 will never be 10/10

As much as she differs from book Yennefer's description, she's still beautiful. I don't know what y'all are on about.

She definitely carries herself with the aggressively seductive energy that I imagined Yen having from the books, the fact that the thread is full of people saying how hard she makes them is proof enough of that. Everything about her looks soft but I don't doubt for a second that she's got her own goals. Not a lot of people talk about that aspect of her performance which is a shame because it can't have been an easy affect. You definitely notice when it's not there in S2 because she's playing vulnerable

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not defending this shit show or her casting, in fact I haven't seen past first 3 episodes and just fast forwarded the rest of season 1, it's all really, really bad and apparently got only worse in later seasons.

I was talking about people who say she's ugly or unattractive, or 'unconventionally' attractive. That's nonsense, she's pretty in the most straightforward way.

Shouldn't have been cast as Yen, tho. Then again, this can be said about most of the actors in the show and it's a giant piece of shit in every single way, even regardless of casting choices.

I genuinely think she is ugly. I unironically can't believe the people who say that she's "conventionally pretty". Dead bug eyes, mid nose, manlike Black personlips on a pajeeta, long face, no femininity to her at all, and she always carries her face with this husk-empty drugged out expression. The only thing she has going for her is her skin LOOKS alright (but how do you know it actually is? anyone's skin can look good with enough professional makeup) and she isn't fat.
Just not being fat and having an alright body makes her above average with today's demographics, but just her face alone is awful. I am shocked that people call her pretty. Every single (young and non-obese) woman who works at every grocery in my town is prettier than her.

I don't think she's an ugly woman but I don't think she's pretty enough to be Yennifer. In the same way that I think Freya is too beautiful to play Ciri.

The tomboyish "ugly-one" shouldn't be traditionally prettier than the woman who's beauty has been enhanced by magic.

So they cast an otherwise pretty woman who just didn't match Yen's ethnicity because they think vaguely brown women are ugly? Willem Dafoe challenges beauty standards. Sarah Jessica Parker, that horse, challenges beauty standards. Sandra Bernhard was sometimes sorta hot and a lot of the time damned ugly - most of the time some would say. Anya Chalotra is no such person.
