Not quite. Last week, Lightyear was expected to make up to 135 million worldwide opening weekend, with 70-85 million coming domestically. Needless to say, it fell short on both fronts.
On paper there's no reason why Buzz Lightyear didn't have the potential to be a billion dollar franchise on his own. The problem is that the movie is shit, and John Lasseter would never have done it himself because the idea is so derivative and money grubbing that it would have been beneath him. That means to make the movie, Disney had to rely on a bunch of entitled, narcissistic and talentless hacks to slap something together and they got a hot pile of garbage with no soul or identity.
For Buzz Lightyear to work as a movie they only had to look at the cartoon to see what would work. Buzz looks like he belongs in a campy, colorful and toyetic world. The Lightyear movie gave us Gears of War. There is no way in hell that a movie like this would have existed in the 90s and kids who saw it would have been bored to fricking tears. They should have looked to the likes of Power Rangers, Xena and other 90s superhero movies for inspiration if the goal was for this to feel like an in-universe movie for the IP.
I think that was ultimately just a cop out because they knew what they had was total shit and they were trying to cover all their bases. The movie did not flop because kids don't understand why Woody isn't in it, it flopped because it sucks ass. Out of all the things they could have done with it they just made a dreary and plodding ripoff of Interstellar with the art style of an Xbox 360 game.
Pixar has been in a slow motion death spiral ever since Good Dinosaur. They still take just as long to make their movies yet they are no better than the competition who churn out CGI animated features in half the time and budget.
Road to 400 million, it'll surely pick up next week. Once it break even, everything after is pure profit. 8 weeks later and it'll hit 500 mil, it got really good word of mouth.
