Korra didn't become gay until the very last second of the last episode, after Nick had already taken it off television.

We can't have beautiful animation because of unions. They make such animation too expensive. That's why most of it is outsourced to Korea & even Japan.

this is why adaptations are so big
they're only reliable way to get a project made
                look at anime or netflix
like literally all anime is some kind of adaptation of something with like a handful of them being original projects
a shit ton of shows on netflix are also adaptations of some kind

                Anonymous

Exactly. Instead of screeching at workers wanting more and unionizing/striking or customers having demands about (subjective) quality, we should make peace with the fact that a system where what and how is created is 99.99% decided based on whether an investor will make the most for his buck and the top levels of management will get the fattest of bonuses isn't one that leads to results most of us want.
It's not the unions that need a leash and it's not the customers that need to shut up.
It's the rich pricks up top that need a muzzle.
                As usual.

I agree that a large part of the problem is those with the most money to go around, but part of the issue absolutely is the artists themselves, unions, and the consumers. We might extend it further to other facets of our society, even. It's a tight net of problems, that is modern society.

For producing art? Clearly they are. Not all studios are sweatshops, the culture varies a lot because Japanese studios are, by and large, independently owned and operated.

Also a big reason why animation budgets are so expensive in the west is a huge amount of redundant labor and corporate bloat.

In the corporate world what people actually say is typically a load of bullshit designed to please HR and the lawyers. How young are you

I'll never understand why these animators don't Ralph Bakshi this shit. They'll complain about the animation industry. But despite how much easier it's gotten to animate, with digital, CG and the internet, they'll never get eight guys together to make a half hour story outside the industry they say they hate so much.

Not many of them are actually capable of making animations that appeals to people, and so need to be on board the sinking ships of big corporate studios that don't make many waves anymore

Those guys complain about the industry yet they don't have the guts to follow in the footsteps of successful indie animators making millions from kickstarter, patreon and merchandise.

If we're JUST talking about art style, or basically any cartoon that doesn't look like Family Guy, I certainly missed a bunch. There were some I intentionally left off like Harley Quinn and Velma because even though those have different art styles, people would see that, not read the message and go, "YOU THINK THOSE SHOWS ARE GOOD???.

It's pretty obvious at this point that they don't want adult animation to succeed

Sure it does but it's still better drawn and more popular than 99.9% of all Burguer cartoons, specially the adult "comedy" ones.

I really like Sublo and Aaron does have some based opinions but he's a total fricking hypocrite. He props himself up as a 'rebel' of the industry and a savior of indie animation despite having 10+ years industry experience and adamantly refusing to leave the system despite b***hing about it 24/7. Anytime people question this he always gives the same chickenshit excuse of "b-but muh money! I need money too!" Well then maybe you shouldn't have moved to Burbank you fricking dumbass. Also people voluntarily leave the industry all the time, Walrusguy did it, he just can't commit to changing the industry or leaving it so all he does is b***h about it.

I can't understand why he hasn't abandoned the system yet. It's over, I left a year ago, find good smart indie projects and work on them, or start them yourself. If you need a paycheck make a patreon or whatever and make money off personal work.

In the anniversary panel for Tangy mustard, it's revealed that he's gone freelance, no longer an animation director. Gotta make money for the apartment and girlfriend and then put time aside for the real stuff

It's the only way to have 24 fully animated half hour episodes made in 5 months time in any affordable way. To make everything talky and the characters only move left and right.

Keep in mind 80% of the budget is going to the actors.

  23. 5 months ago

There's been a large increase of action and dramatic adult animation recently to the point where Adult Comedies are being left in the dust due to executives and modern writers.

I'd love another wave of low-budget crude experimental shows that just want to make people laugh instead of trying to be the next Bojack Horsman or another safe BobsBurgers-like

The problem with that image is that its only applicable to a handful of adult animated SITCOMS. Things that are heavily dependant on the writing and not the animation.

You are justifying their bad rules according to their bad rules. Japan has plenty of animated series for adults with good drawing, the comedic ones too. The Flintstones had good drawing on an extreme budget. These just don't even want to try

"Writing" without good animation is just a radio show, not animation

cherry picking is what this place does best

How to save animation in the west:

    >make animation studios independent from network companies, streaming platforms, and major production studios

    >cap budgets for animation projects at $50 million

    >Can adult animation be saved?
No, there is nothing physically stopping them but there is a psychic barrier. When people talk about the "curse" or "even breaking a curse", it gives it power. Saying that you "break the curse" acknowledges that it exist which it doesn't. Back then the Simpsons used to be called "Adult Animation".

The curse never existed in the sense that magic doesn't fricking exist. Hitman "breaking the curse" implies that Hitman did anything special.

        >"Video games are not art."
        >"Animation is for kids."
        >"Comics is just about superheroes."
These are just brainworms in mind of Americans that manage to do more damage when people actively try to remove them.

          >implies that Hitman did anything special
It held up both financially and artistically, proving there are no actual problems with video game adaptations. The real problem is licensing.

I think adult animation is getting there to break the mold, you just gotta look a bit more. Now if netflix can stop killing shows that'll be just peachy.
