Of course, just not by current Hollywood.
Original Conan had plenty of flaws; uneven and often-poor visual presentation perhaps chief among them (examples are too numerous for an exhaustive list, but obviously fake hammers, pillars, rock walls, a couple fake backgrounds, James Earl Jones turning into the snake, glittering Valeria valkyrie, the spirits coming to take Conan (which is charming in its own right but they aren't convincing), etc.)
Most of the acting is quite middling; the immensely memorable and quotable script rescues it
Overall it lacks consistency and polish, but is very good nonetheless, and Hollywood would never make something as sincere, or as glorifying of masculine virtue, today

As someone who set out digging to the bottom of the barrel of Sword and Sorcery films, I can tell you Hollywood couldn't make anything as good as Conan even then. The next closest is Deathstalker - a film good enough that it's orgy scene appears in at least 3 other movies, yet feels from start to finish like a low budget knockoff of Conan with nothing memorable. >Amazons (1986) >Barbarian Queen >Barbarian Queen 2 - Empress Strikes Back >Conan the Destroyer >Conquest (1983) >Deathstalker I-IV >Eyes of the Serpent >Hundra >Iron Warrior >Red Sonja >Sorceress (1982) >The Arena (1974) >The Barbarians >The Warrior and the Sorceress >Warrior Queen
Nothing came close. That said, I actually liked The Warrior and the Sorceress, but I wouldn't call it good or memorable. Just something I'd recommend if anyone is looking for low budget S&S campiness.
I think it's because, categorically, conan the barbarian is a sword and sorcery film, but it's an epic first. So if I wanted to find movies like conan I would avoid S&S and just look for ancient epics, preferably non historical with fantasy elements.
No not really, just in terms of similarity to the archetypical sword and sorcery. Also king arthur is historical legend, it's a few steps away from asking if muhammad is sword and sorcery.
i just watched this last night for the first time, loved it. how does the sequel stack up against the first movie?

Cheers mate. Appreciate the effort
What about the solomon kane movie
is gawain and the green knight a different genre? excalibur and flesh and blood?

Only by another conan film and they aren't making them
No. It is the pinnacle of kino.
should have just called the movie Arnold Schwarzenegger the barbarian because it has absolutely nothing to do with what Robert E Howard wrote about
decent movie though I'm hoping for a 4k release
gonna shill my anonymous quote for the 2nd time in history:
You read Robert E Howard's Conan to see how smart Conan is
You watch John Milius's Conan to see how smart John Milius is
no because nobody can write epic soundtracks anymore
Can there be another Arnold?
>he's never seen Hawk the Slayer
Jack Palance carried that entire movie
For me, it was the turbo-autistic Elf archer.
Is Excalibur not sword and sorcery? I think both of these movies are perfect and complement each other well.

It's a movie from a lost age. So, no.
I always preferred the Beastmaster
>Tfw no ferret bros
those human/bat vampires are so kino, wonder why no other movie tried to emulate it
No, its the greatest film ever made.

The sequel is nowhere near as good but it’s fun schlock in it’s own right. It’s more like an unofficial D&D movie.
