It’s literally just your standard existential/cosmic “horror” themes but with the aesthetics of obsolete/vintage culture and media.
Material recordings rather than digital, obsolete technology, retro design choices, particularly from the late 80s through the mid/late 90s.
I think a lot of the appeal is that for younger people (like ages 15-25ish) this era was just in the cusp of their consciousness.
People in the late teens and esrly 20s were children when VHS tapes, cassettes, late 20th century tech in general were being phased out of mainstream popularity. It holds a certain amount of nostalgia and residual childhood apprehension.
Pair that with basic tier horror tropes (darkness, the juxtaposition of “good”/innocent things with “evil”/bad things), the fear of the unknown or ambiguous, and spooky uncanny figures, and you have a pretty solid recipe for a media trend.
i'm entering my 30s and VHSs and all this junk was already far gone when i first became truly conscious about it, i think it affects younger people most because they literally don't have any direct connection to it, they don't have any memories of experiences first hand with them other than tertiary exposure telling them it was spooky and odd. It's like how the spookiest thing used to be extremely grainy and faded black and white/sepia photographs for us.
As far as Analog horror goes, that unfamiliarity with the medium plays into it too, because digital video is a thing that you can break apart into frames and meta data and a format and it's got all its guts open to you if you wish to look, meanwhile a modern young person is going to be confused thinking of how the images and sounds in an old video work like inside a VHS tape. For me VHSs aren't as off putting as the 2000s era of crusty low bitrate digital shit back when the internet was truly completely wild and open and you could stumble into fricked up criminal and forbidden stuff with a few search terms. I remember feeling actually unsafe seeing early gore videos and real crime in sites that i genuinely could get viruses from, because the tech was so early, rough and unprotected. Maybe in a couple more years we'll get to horror emulating that, the Dagestan Massacre/3guys1hammer visuals.

No one i know was using VHS past like 2003 because DVD players started coming with almost all new devices. I live in a place that was only starting to get out of poverty by then so people had neither VHSs nor VHS players, and DVDs came about just when home video became economically accessible so people never really transitioned from the old format to digital. Additionally, pirating DVDs was easy as frick and i remember seeing some guy on a mat on the street selling hundreds and hundreds of pirated movies, including brand new camrips for less than a dollar being the most common thing ever.
was kind of a golden age to quickly catch up to decades of pop culture you never had access to really. Lots of PS2 games too.

Then it shows that part of him being erased by the time he’s been commandeered as just a symbol of patriotism, with little resemblance to the independent being he was when he started out. He spends the rest of existence as an increasingly grotesque shell of himself, acting as a mascot for whoever happens to own him at the moment. Nobody really remembers Superman anymore, just corrupted versions of him.

Guy who made the original Horroverse threads here. If it does come back (and that's a big 'if'), then it won't be on here. What few posters made the jump over to /tg/ nstead of scattering to the winds don't really care about coming back (for good reason) and I don't really see the point. I've toyed with bringing them back every once in a while, but never did. And threads like these have convinced me that I probably made the right choice. If anything, I'd have better luck turning it into a Sonic the Hedgehog fanfic or fancomic than starting up a second slew of threads that will get shitposted and spammed to death by this shit board.

Eventide is absolute garbage though, it blatantly copies Local 58 but the visuals are embarrassingly amateur. It does a worse job emulating the look of that era and the 3D stuff sticks out like a sore thumb. The Greenhouse one is by far the worst out of the bunch, there’s this particular part where you see a model of a human arm and it looks worse than something you would see in Pixar’s earliest days. At least Local 58 is a visually cohesive experience, Eventide is a blatant rip-off on top of being worse conceptually and visually. You should be embarrassed for thinking this.
