        Anonymous

the sequel trilogy didnt flop like most will tell you. it did billions for each movie. thats before tie-ins, ads, toys, games, books, israeli math, etc. the problem was that it went from like 2.5 billion to barely a billion on the 3rd movie when sequels usually go up in money. to basically drop off a cliff was a massive flop despite making a billion.

          Anonymous

Not what I asked. I thought the merchandise sold poorly and lost money.
I know the sequels made a healthy amount of cash but devalued the brand in a horrfiying way.

It might have very well been profitable, but it was nowhere near as profitable as it should have been. Everybody knows that if they managed it better, it would have made far more and been better regarded overall. It isn't just about raw profit, but opportunity.

The sequels have completely torpedoed the toy department of the brand. It's actually impressive how quickly it managed to destroy everything when you look back at what a goliath SW Legos and other toys were back in the day.

        Anonymous

A lot of people don't get that SW is not a strong brand anymore. Toys R Us was relying on Star Wars success. In general toy sales are struggling, but the sort of "event" status of a star wars film was gone. It was not the same as the prequels. There's many factors involved, but Hasbro, Disney's and Toys R Us's relationships are very much strained. They don't trust each other. It wasn't the same as a billion dollar disney princess movie having products fly off the shelf. They can all play the blame game, but I think it's obvious when the property isn't fun, it doesn't sell toys.

Merch sales are down 60% since before Disney bought the IP. They would literally be making more money from Star Wars right now if they had bought it and not made any new movies and just kept it running as-is.

They are actually down lower than - 60% from their peak. The only toys that sell are Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, Maul, etc. Go to Target and Walmart right now and you’ll see the entire (small) Star Wars section is just retro toys.

            Anonymous

I wonder how much of that is because of how Disney's treated Star Wars and how much of that was just inevitable. Even in the best case scenario the toy aisle wouldn't look like it did in 2004. It didn't even when TFA was at its pre-release peak and pushing things hard.

Certainly every franchise has its ebbs and flows, its peaks and valleys. But I do think TLJ (whether you loved or hated the movie) was a definitive red line for Star Wars as there was a before-TLJ Star Wars and an after-TLJ Star Wars. After TLJ, 50+% of the fan base walked away, merch sales dropped by almost 70%, the next 2 films brutally underperformed (and Star Wars disappeared from Cinemas thereafter) and the entire “Fandom Menace” media universe was created.

Even more so, Disney as a whole is badly struggling financially now and one wonders how much of this really began with the TLJ controversy and grew from there.

No doubt, but what I'm saying is the toy industry doesn't revolve around Star Wars, and the entire industry isn't the same as it was 20 years ago. The action figure market in particular is not what it was.

                Anonymous

Right. But since the 70s, Star Wars has been a major player in the toy industry. At many points, Star Wars was the undisputed king of toys and merchandise sales

                Anonymous

It still has a bigger footprint on toys than most IPs. Like I said, I have no doubt that Disney's handling has left an impact. But it was never going to look like the late 90s or early 2000s again, and the trend made it apparent that it wasn't going to keep looking even like 2012. Anyone that's been around kids--which, admittedly, most of this board shouldn't be allowed to--knows this. The action figure demographic in particular was hit hard.

Parents control the wallets and parents control the culture within their households. If Mom and Dad say “Star Wars ruined Leia and Luke and Yoda” and it’s “stupid now” then their kids are likely to just ignore it and play with Barbies or Marvel or Paw Patrol toys.

The truth is that while Barbie expanded their brand, they never tried to humiliate and degrade Barbie and replace her with a cheap corporate knockoff. They kept her as the core, and built out from there.

Star Wars tried to do it the other way and that’s why they failed

The thing about Star Wars numbers in particular that are very hard to figure out is ….how much of these “total” minutes/ numbers are rewatches?

Because if you say, 5 - 7 million people are watching Andor or Ashoka weekly…how many of those are people watching the episode 3 times or more? Because Star Wars has always been unique in that regard. So these numbers are very likely padded or amplified by multiple rewatches from the same people

Crossed arms is such an un-feminine pose. I've drawn literally hundreds of commissioned sketches and illustrations of female characters and I have never even been asked to draw that pose. Not once. And I'm not a porn artist so that is not why, if that's what you're thinking.

I'd say the most popular ones are a hand (or both hands) on the hips, arms raised, or laying on the side. A lot of the time the commissioner has something more specific in mind though, or they give me carte blanche in which case I'll try and find a new pose that looks interesting that I haven't done yet. I've drawn a lot of poses, but nobody's ever asked for the arms crossed pose unless it's a male character.

Rey’s entire premise is to be a corporate Luke Skywalker (without 1/20th the popularity). Every single thing she has done and said, or will do and say, is a direct THEFT from Luke Skywalker.

There was a literal best selling book series called “New Jedi Order” about Luke rebuilding and leading a newer, more compelling Jedi Order. Kathy canceled that series and is FRICKING STEALING the story note for note for her bland, soulless corporate fill-in, Rey Palpatine.

The new movie could be Citizen Kane (lol, it won’t be. It will be garbage), and it wouldn’t alter the fact that Rey is an awful proxy for the real thing.

Because 99% of the problem with Star Wars is in the sequels. Genuinely. Like I'm reading wookiepedia and reading the synopsis of some Disney jedi's life, and it all sounds decent. Sounds like a character I could give a shit about.
And then it ends like this:
      >Over three and a half decades after his death, the voices of _______ and many other great Jedi were heard by and encouraged the last living Jedi, the young aspirant Rey Skywalker, to use their power to destroy Darth Sidious, the returned Emperor and her grandfather, during the Battle of Exegol.

I doubt it. George selling it to Disney for 4 billion dollars might have actually been the killing blow. What was at one point nascent American folklore (something extremely difficult to actually create in a culture obsessed to the point of insanity with commodification of stories) is now hopelessly marred by the hypocrisy of the original creator and the further defilement by an actual corporate empire who embodies the exact opposite of the values of the story itself.

But remember kids, Soviet directors had more artistic freedom than George did because capitalism is bad. He said so.

The entire point of disney owning it is to turn it into a demoralization engine and propaganda machine for LCD people. It has nothing to do with trying to deliver quality content and I think its largely there to shit on the culture of white people by having disney own it and rape it and force people to watch it.

I mean the entire dialogue response between Ahsoka and Anakin is very vague because the writers dont know how to portray spiritual depth. Theres no expository dialogue of any understanding between them or discussion of what Anakin is doing as a force ghost, its all very vague and relies on visuals and nostalgia bait because the people writing it have no idea or dont want to portray the spirituality of star wars without it being seen as offensive.

You will never have any profound moments like Obi-Wan explaining what the force is to Luke or any larger understandings, the force is basically just certain people having special powers and others dont in Disney wars. Even the dialogue from the dark siders is very vague and you have Baylan saying that Shin is trained to be more than a jedi but you dont really see how and you dont get a sense that shes really a threat or knowledgeable

Really all Disney can do is create superficial fanbait with nothing of substance because they are too afraid to take risks while they likely use their bullshit marketing to make it seem good because they have a diverse cast and many women. I feel their entire value structure is based on trying to gain emotional brownie points from leftists rather than making something thoughtful or good because its aiming at people who feeling types rather than thinkers and yet its not even good feeling its rather exploitative

I don't think there is an economic component whatsoever. That's been neutered for years if not decades.

I mean sure in a vague sense that's plausible, some individual elements demonstrably are like that, particularly israeli immigrants from old Soviet Union that ended up as elites in US, the Trotskyists.
But I believe it's also explained by people having corporations as their parishes, absorbing things like the woke lifestyle uncritically and out of fear and then living by it.

Taking it too far can be entertaining... but be careful because people that do, like Jay Dyer also believe that 9/11 was an inside demolition, that apollo missions happened in a studio... it's a rabbit hole of trying to approach coherentism by believing every stupid book you find on the conspiracy shelf, then you have to throw away chunks of your brain and blind yourself in order to keep your entire schema.

One thing I Haven't seen brought up yet that pisses me off so much about Nu Wars is the lightsaber combat

When the frick did it become the norm that disarming your opponent means they get a stat boost and magically twirl around and disarm you in turn. Its fricking gay, stupid and annoying. It happened in the Anakin vs Obiwan flash back, it happened in Ahsoka vs Anakin in the ahsoka series and it technically happened with vader vs reva, those are at least the ones I can think of.

The choreography in general is fricking bad too. I think Reva vs Vader is my most hated fight in a long time since for some reason they make Vader do Kung Fu with the fricking force, he literally does a karate kid "pick up jacket and attitude" move from the karate kid remake, and why is Vader dodging in general? He should be an unstoppable force not a fricking monk.

Disney expected Ashoka to perform on par with Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s vastly underperforming their own internal expectations, both in terms of ratings and merch sales.

At this point, it’s time to just go with a recast of the Big 3. Star Wars has like 100+ different shows, animated shows, animated shorts, movies, comics, novels, graphic novels, audio dramas, etc covering HUNDREDS of different characters and eras. They have so thoroughly covered all their side characters that they’ve actually neglected the literal main characters of Star Wars.

      This.

It’s time to recast the Big 3 and build around them again. That’s how you save Star Wars. You can absolutely continue to do separate shows set all over the Universe or timeline. But without a core Big 3 and mythology, it’s all pointless.

DC has constantly recast and reinvigorated Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman (DC’s version of Luke and Han and Leia) over the decades and we’ve gotten great content from it. It’s time to do the same with Star Wars

        Anonymous

Oh frick right off. DC has constantly stagnated Superman and Batman. The one good thing about the MCU is that has been forcing the characters to age and then retire or die off. This lets the universe actually develop, and move forward. At this point, Batman Beyond shouldn't be a far off future that we will never reach, it should be a story we've already arrived at, built upon and moved passed.
The last thing Star Wars needs is wallowing in a "big three". Do you really want to see what Disney does to Luke if they start writing stories about him again? Do you want to see that much more about Leia (whether it's her talking politics to the senate for a half hour, or her becoming a Jedi or someshit?). And the fact that Han Solo in your image is Solo movie Solo says all I should have to say about that.

What Disney needs to do is get some more things set AFTER the sequels, so we can finally rip that bandaid off, instead of having it looming over every mid-quel story they write as the ever present, bad-end future

Marvel is badly struggling attempting to get their 6th and 7th tier characters over with audiences. Nobody watches their shows (except for A-Lister Loki) or goes to their movies anymore. It’s failing.

Meanwhile, the constant Batman, Spider-Man, James Bond recasts are consistently, decade after decade, near billion or billion plus successes

They aren't beholden to continuity, though. Characterization changes. Moore's Bond wasn't Connery's.

Star Wars has done it with A-Listers like Obi-Wan Kenobi to great success.

I think most people would be fine with different continuities anyway. Not saying they should, only that it makes little difference to the g.a. You think 80% of the audience even know what the frick a “Hera Syndulla” is or where she fits in the scheme of things?

They have one surefire route to saving the franchise. They can make a movie where its revealed the sequel trilogy is a result of a wound in the force. The entire film would need to undo the events of the sequels and establish that the true timeline was the one where Palpatine truly died with in Episode 6. They could satisfy all the gay redditor babymen by having Rey save the original timeline by sacrificing herself to heal the wound. End of the film would have to establish that Luke went on to follow the original path set by the OG Expanded Universe.

Then they'd have to sit on the IP for several years before easing back into it with non-Skywalker associated content. They have to stop with that shit because no one wants to see whatever dumb frick sUbVeRsIvE garbage modern writers come up with. They could win back everyone by just returning to status quo and releasing safe content people have been clammering for since the sale renewed hope in the franchise. Thwy could do a whole new series set well into the future after Episode 6 and continue on making new storylines in the same canon.

Honestly if you completely ignore the sequels, Star Wars is ok. Not great but in a passable state with a reasonable ratio of good to shit. The most sensible choice is to decanonize the sequels, it should happen when KK retires/dies. Of course the decanonization won't be official, a new producer would just say they're "exploring a new direction for the canon" which would be synonymous for retconning the sequels.

That would be great, or place them (ST characters) in their own unique timeline or “thread of destiny.” Then you could take Ahsoka, Ezra, Grogu, Luke, Leia, Han, etc and tell the story from here with a completely unknown future. This would be a massive boon to the franchise as they can now use the real main characters in interesting ways without being beholden to a deeply controversial future where everyone turns into an idiotic losers and a corporation remakes (or “soft reboots”) the OT in the most convoluted way possible

I have an idea: make a new trilogy. It's about how all the characters from episodes 7-9 are all failures and their only role in the new trilogy was to be a stepping stool for some new characters. Make Finn a angry schizo who walks around in a wheelchair, make Poe an alcoholic who retired because he couldn't put up with the stress of leadership, make Rey a bitter hag who isolates herself from everyone else and goes back on everything she accomplished. Make them support some young new characters, and let Palpatine return once again leading the Second Order this time.
    >inb4 you say "but that would be cruel and would undo everything episodes 7-9 did"
