Honestly you should just switch, or at least try a couple of distros in VirtualBox to see what you like. I've been using Ubuntu Mate for years now without any problem. It's really no more complicated than Windows, has a start menu and options etc. And you can set your wallpaper by just right-clicking an image and selecting "Set as wallpaper."
Linux is like the ocean: it's easy to just have fun paddling on the shore, but if you really want to you're allowed to have a nice day and your child in a cheaply made carbon fibre submersible.
