I think they would have a more interesting dynamic as friends than anything.
Aang, for better or worse, is a very forgiving and very openly affectionate person. He has no issues doting on his friends, teasing them, etc.
If Azula had at any point joined the group, I could see her at first trying to manipulate Aang or force his trust, only for him to then offer it freely. She would finally start to show a few cracks when he genuinely made her laugh with his goofy antics, and she'd be beside herself that such a goofy kid was the terrifying Avatar that once threatened her entire way of life. The two would bond a little teasing Zuko, his royal fireness.
Of course Azula, being Azula, would desperately cling to her facade. Then one day, she'd slip, and do something really embarrassing. She would react with anger and bitterness, lashing out at anyone making light of it, but Aang would laugh anyway - and she'd finally start to melt a little. Azula grew up in a world on fire, but has no idea what it's like to feel warm... so I think this would be the point that she really starts to change. It would start to feel a little ridiculous trying to be perfect around such happily imperfect people. And little by little, the influence of her father and grandfather would start to fade away.
is there a rule against an avatar marrying a descendent of the pervious avatar? seems like a it could easily be corrupted through nepotism building too much political power like the catholic church

Now obviously you could argue that this is merely a statistical fluke, and that the exact genes/combination of genes that would need to be passed down from a airbender-waterbender pairing is an unknown, however based on the fact how this is a cartoon, for which the creators probably didnt think too hard on the exact genetics, aside from the aforementioned ratio as evidenced by the 1 example provided, it is a safe bet to assume the accuracy of said assessment.
In that case, we can also juxtapose from this, that an airbender-nonbender pairing would most certainly statistically have a 50% chance for either an airbender or a nonbender child, which whilst it is indeed greater odds to provide more airbenders, as evidenced by the Tenzin-Pema pairing, if we are to take the odds at face value, and to assume that the Aang-Mai pairing would produce a total of 3 offspring, there are 8 following scenarios:
