Studios get the largest percent of the opening week box office. (not so much in some smaller turd world countries).
Marketing costs for these expensive tentpoles is mostly defrayed by product placements and product branding deals.
This is why studios will see a movie costing 100 million in production make 300 million or less and still make sequels to it.

Of course often studios will use israelite Math to try and avoid paying actors/directors their piece of the back end.

DIscovery paid 40 billion for this collection of unreleased DC movies and IPs, and now with only Aquaman 2 left to open in theaters, absolutely none of them have made a single dime.

It seems clear that capeshit has peaked commercially and is increasingly seen as predictable and cringe.
One thing that should be taken into account is that there's a generational rejection of superhero movies, whose boom is now tied to aging millennial manchildren. Zoomers turn their backs to that as a matter of principle.

      >It seems clear that capeshit has peaked commercially
Movies broadly peaked just before Covid. They may never recover, people got used to watching everything at home on their big screen.
An occasional aberration like Way of Water can't really support theater chains.

This. And they don't have anything left in the bag for actually well known, marketable heroes, it's all literal whos only comic book nerds recognize left, and they hilariously fricking refuse to cater to the actual comic book nerds anywhere near like they'd need to, they have to keep changing shit around to where it's practically unrecognizable slop with tons of tiny little panderings that are basically DID YOU SEE THAT HAHA INUNIVERSE INJOKE and think that should be enough to sell it. When whatever soul the source had (which isn't a lot with DC C tier characters anyway) is totally absent.

The last 2 movies were terrible. The MCU is a mess, and they're not even planning on trying the X-Men for years, still. Marvels is going to tank hard. Nobody gives a shit about Secret War already. And they still haven't figured out what to do with Kang, and that's all they have. The current Avengers lineup has frick all anyone gives a shit about and they seemingly can't build anyone up.

2019 was the absolute peak for theaters.
You had 9 films break a billion dollars (4 was typical for the previous 5 years), and the next two after that made over $750 million.

Then it all caved in during Covid, the top two films of 2020 were both Bugmen films that couldn't even break 500 mil.

No Way Home was the only billion dollar+ film of 2021. Things got better in 2022 but still nowhere near the peak.

thanks. What I meant was that the comics did tank around that time, then the new wave of decent comic book movies gave the companies renewed interest in comics until this decade when it began to wane again.
beetle-borg Blue Beetle was a popular guy for about 10 years, but people are not into comic book movies anymore post infinity war, let alone DCEU movies because of how often they dropped the ball on each of their movies, save Joker and probably that Batman spinoff that's its own contained thing. 5-10 years ago, he'd probably have a better shot.

He did land get prominent roles in Batman Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, that Injustice game and JLA around the time as well as his comics.

It's really just comic book movies are dead now, as well as comics now. He had a better chance 5-10 years ago.

People posting revenues are completely missing the point; of course that shit is still getting some profit, fricking anything nowadays will give you a profit so long as there are masses of npcs out there willing to pay for anything. For every blue beetle showing, I bet it pretty much only had teens with time to spare. But the main thing is, no one gives a frick for any upcoming capeshit movies. I remember back when MCU was the big deal and everyone was shitting bricks over the newest movies in production. Even the lamest movies had a huge cultural impact with merch, memes, ads, etc. Nowadays, I swear I heard literally 0 people, normies included, even mentioning secret invasion, let alone blue beetle.
The fact fricking Barbie and Mario were the biggest hits this year shows people still want cultural icons on their big screens, just not capeshit anymore. Specially since they have already exhausted movies about all the big names. We're only really missing a recent Green Lantern movie, and we all know people would only barely care for it at this point, especially with both main superhero cinematic universes crumbling in real time.

      >no one gives a frick for any upcoming capeshit movies.
Yes. They lost the spark because of predictability, lack of talent by those who made them (directors, writers, execs etc) and oversaturation. Too many movies, all mediocre.
