I never liked it. Opening scene with the Cuban refugees entering Florida makes it seem like its going to make some kind of point about something but it doesn't. It's just a dudebro action movie with no substance. When people try to compare it to Godfather, Goodfellas and Once Upon A Time In America it makes me seethe.

I've never seen the Howard Hawkes film it's based on.

That's funny because the Godfather and Goodfellas are trash. Haven't seen OUaTiA because I'm not going to sit thru 4 hours of wopslop even for Jen Cunnelly.

The original Scarface (1932 one) is right there among these as one of the best mafia films. It's just that 80s remake is more popular, but yeah it sucks.

I'll probably try watching it tonight. I have an aversion to really old movies keeping my attention though.

make some kind of point? like what? that scene is setting the stage for the rest of the movie. castro emptied his prisons (tony was in prison in cuba) onto florida. that's the whole reason he gets to be in the USA.

yeah idk what that poster was going on about. movies in the 80's didn't "make points" on social issues. society wasn't on it's woke/anti-woke arc

I thought there was a pretty obvious point about lust for power, with the contrast between Scarface and his chad friend (don't remember the name tbh it's been a while) who is effortlessly content with his modest success and doesn't really want more. And of course there's the big irony that despite all the evil shit he does, he gets whacked for his one good act, the point being that once you get in deep in a life of crime there's no backing out or compromising.
Honestly way more straightforward and sensible themes compared to The Godfather.

Holy frick have a nice day. Scarface is a stone-cold classic and infinitely rewatchable and quotable. It has barely any flaws and is pure 80's SOVL that flows like butter. It's great and whatever the frick you said here doesn't matter.

Tony's aggravatingly prideful, stubborn and angry character actually could've been pretty interesting. You even see other characters react negatively to his obstinacy. Unfortunately he's set in another generic tale of American excess. The movie has the reputation it does because the character is compelling, but the storytelling is not.

i only watched scarface once. when i was a kid. it was one of the first great tier movies i saw, but the thing i remember the most is, damn this was a long ass movie. im glad that i've seen it but im even more glad that im over with it and i wont have the fear of missing out

on the other hands, movies like godfather I, II, lord of the ring (all 3), barry lyndon, ben hur, titanic, hateful 8, hamlet, apocalypse now.... feel like they just fly by and you wish there was more.
im too scared to try and rewatch scarface because im pretty sure it wouldnt hold up
