Add a scene in another episode where she's with Jim at a high-society party with Bruce and Jim coyly mentions he wouldn't mind being Bruce Wayne's father-in-law. You can still do the whole falling out off-screen to set him up as being bitter and alone in his old age, and it'd even hit harder since we actually see them work well together before Bruce fricks it all up.

Robin and Batgirl were 18 and 25 when they costarred in Batman Family. Dick was explicitly 20 during COIE.
Post-Crisis Secret Origins said Babs was 13 during Y2 and Dick was 12 during Y3.
The 10 year Zero Hour timeline had didn't give ages, but had Dick become Robin in Y3, Babs become Batgirl in Y5, and Dick become Nightwing in Y6.
The first comic to make them the same age was Nightwing (1996) Annual #2, the comic that explained why they didn't get married after Infinite Crisis.
