Capeshit is Fricking Stupid

How do we kill it forever so other genres can get published for once? The medium as a whole needs superheroes to go away.

You're just showing your a casual scrub that thinks there's only Marvel and DC. Plenty of the smaller publishers release scifi, fantasy, and horror comics. But superheroes always sell better than the rest.

Only in terms of market share and revenue but not quantity and even then there's Image which has a 10% market share compared to the 30-40% each for Marvel and DC. There's several dozens of comics released every month by other publishers. You're only thinking of money and pretending other comics aren't still being made and sold. You can find even more self published comics.

If Image and other publishers exist and publish non-cape comics, it’s not a monopoly now is it, frickwit. And most readers only are interested in capes, that is the reality. If they weren’t, they could read comics not published by the Big Two

I feel deadpool and Harley achieve what most superhero comic series don't, make people happy and entertained to make fun of superheroes while being superhero narratives themselves, if superhero stopped being so serious and embraced how ridiculously fun they are for instant gratification, they would be alot better in the long run. Like the first avengers movie.

You don't understand. It's deliberate. The promise of good things happening in the future keeps you gullible schmucks buying those comics. If you were actually given what you want, you wouldn't come back. Give people jam today and they'll just sit and eat it, but the promise of jam tomorrow will keep them going forever.

Eliminating serials in general or pushing a social engineering to make the concept of writers who aren't the original creators taking over series is frowned upon. Majority of shit writing in capeshit comics is because of muh status quo, which only happens because the original creative team is no longer on the property. Spider-Man should have ended the moment Steve Ditko left. If writers weren't able to fall back on popular IP printing money, they'd need to get creative to make their shit sell. Then constantly pushing new super hero after super hero would stop doing it and they'd have to actually get creative with their genres.

Since this seems to be the designated comic hate thread of the week, I'll dump some of my thoughts
I don't know anything about writing, I only speak about the art of comics.

There are many widespread practices in the comics industry that I wish would stop.
The first of these is the excessive use of airbrush glowing effects.
This never looks good, it's not how light works, it's lazy, it just simply looks bad. Artists should learn to depict light manually and convincingly, not just slap a blurry mess over it.

The next thing I have gripes with are these repetitive panels. Where the boxes are all exactly the same shape and size and often the image inside the panel is exactly the same or with only minor changes.

I gather they're trying to convey a specifc mood, where the passage of time is passing at a certain speed and something is changing gradually, or that the mood is very awkard and uncomfortable, but frankly it just doesn't hit. 99% of the time these pages just look stiff and would be far improved if they drew them normally.

        Anonymous

On the other end of the spectrum are panels that are excessively creative. I feel like the artist isn't actually concerned with telling a story but instead just wants to show off his artistic skills.
It's distracting, half the time it's difficult to tell what's going on in the page and just takes me out of the action.
It's fine to have these maybe once per 10 issues but some comics insist on having them damn near every single page to the point where it's more of an artbook than a comic with a readable story.

          Faces

So many of the faces just look ugly or weird.
I don't know why they insist on drawing every single tooth whenever they draw a mouth, I don't want to stare at someone's ugly mouth in excessive detail.

Also they're largely unexpressive. I get the feeling that the artist just looked in a mirror and made a silly face and copied that, or copied from a photo. They're too realistic in the amount the mouth opens or the eyes open, etc.
You've got to exaggerate the expressions when you do a drawing. You'll have a guy who's just seen his entire family get killed before his eyes and his face just looks like he's mildly yawning.

            Lack of dynamism.

If we're talking capeshit, then we're talking guys getting punched through entire buildings, flying faster than a jet, lifting entire mountains. This needs to be conveyed, but it's often not.
Many times when a character is supposed to be moving extremely fast, they just kinda look like they're standing still, there's no sense of motion, it's very amatuerish.
I don't know the solution to this, but it needs to be fixed because as it is, it just looks bad.

Issue is the same with when one character is hitting another, it just doesn't feel like any force is being delivered.

                Anonymous

That's all the compilation pics I've made so far, but some other issues I feel are common are

                >Drawing characters crying with opaque bright white tears, making it look like they're crying cum
                >Shitty digital colouring that makes everything brown but with the thick black lines still as black, a poor combination that makes everyone look like they've come out of a coal mine.
                >Too many scratchy lines.
Liefeld is the number one culprit of this but many other comic artists are guilty of it too. They're just simply too many lines of the characters faces nad it makes it look like they've gone some kind of skin disease
                >Overall pacing/timing issues
Hard to explain but one notable example is of a panel of Spiderman crashing through a window to attack whoever, and as he crashes through the window he delivers a quippy line that goes something like "Hey I'm your friendly neighborhood window replaceman man, are your windows constantly getting smashed in by local vigilantees? Then buy now today new anti Spiderman windows only $9.99, if you order today you can get a 2 for 1 discount on buttkicking!"
The point is, there's no way he could deliver that whole paragraph long joke in the half second it took him to dive through the window. The pacing is completely off. and This sort of thing is prevalent throughout all comics.

                Anonymous

To summarise, as an easy checklist for artists making comics, if you don't want them to look like shit
                >no glow effects, draw your lighting manually
                >no repetitive panels, make your panels less stiff
                >no excessively creative panels, at the end of the day you're supposed to be telling a story through your panelling, not confusing your reader
                >make sure your faces look good, when you've drawn your page, go back for a second pass and make sure things like the eyes aren't cross-eyed and tha the expression is actually conveying what it's supposed to
                >draw dynamic panels. If a character is punching another, don't just have his fast gently touching him, really exagerrate the gesture and make it dynamic.
                >If you're going for a realistic look, tone down the black. It's colour theory 101, you don't shade with black
                >Don't use too many lines when drawing a face, the more lines you add the older your character looks. Use as few as you can get away with.
                >Read through your comic when you're done to make sure it flows right. If a panel is supposed to be taking place in the span of 2 seconds, you can't have a huge paragraph text bubble within it

Yes but there's a reason why speedlines are so prevalent in manga for example
                >It's easy
                >Can help convey even the flow of the scene
                >Can improve the aesthetic
The king of manga (RIP) here does it well for even a simple motion like throwing your hands down.
Another option would be to use panel changes to more effectively show motion.

Dragon ball uses other stuff as well like the red points of impact. The way it uses speedlines in the BD fight between Goku and Tien is fantastic, that I agree.

Though I think it's a bit more complicated than that.
I think a lot needs to be done in the drawing of the figure.

If you imagine an animation of someone punching another. all the individual frames of him approaching the person, preparing to hit him, actually hitting him, and then him recoiling back, etc.
In a comic you seemingly have to choose just one of these key frames to use as your panel of hitting the person.
But I suspect it's actually more complicated than that, I think that to convey punching properly, it's not just a single keyframe, but is actually multiple keyframes merged together, to convey more time, and therefore more impact in a single page.
I haven't looked too much into it though, it's a difficult area. I would have to speak to an animator to get more insight.

They're too distracting. If the reader notices the panelling, it's a sign you've gone wrong.
When reading a comic your eye should flow through the panels and pages smoothly, immersed in the story. If he has to stop reading and is made aware that he is looking at a comic page, no matter how impressive the art may be, it has failed its fundamental role of being a story.

It's like if you're watching a movie and you are taken out of the action by paying attention of the camera work. When you watch a movie you are supposed to be immersed, the camerawork should be invisible, taking you through the action without you noticing it.
Just as extremely poor camerawork is distracting, extremely artistic camerawork is also distracting.

Or a better example is if in a music band, the drummer or bass player are overshadowing the lead singer. It doesn't matter how impressive they are, it's not the place, they have to remain in the background while the lead singer takes the spotlight.
In a comic, the story comes first, the panelling is just support.

Go and watch a Tool gig. The lead singer hides at the back of the stage to ensure the rest of the band get all the attention.
Or, for a less pretentious example, if you honestly think that Angus Young should stop stealing the spotlight from his frontman you know even less about showmanship than you seem to about comics.
I don't have any autistically prepared collages, so I'll just leave with a single example of very well-used repetitive panelling.

Well perhaps in that case the band is the focus and the singer is not, the point still stands. There is a hierarchy of focus, and if it's not respected, the order falls apart.
You can change the focus if you like, if you want to do a very artistic focussed comic like Moebius or something then sure, the art stands center stage. But for the 99% of comics, their purpose is to tell a story through the visual medium, and so the story must be the focus without being interrupted by the artist trying to show off.
