I don't care if an animated show has god-tier writing, I'm not going to watch it if the visual direction looks like ass. If I didn't care about visuals and wanted to focus solely on writing, I'd only read books.
it's an animated series about a middle aged woman who doesn't have giant objectified breasts, truly the one thing most of you hate more than anything else.
of course it's going to fail. What, you think guys here want to hear a touching existential examination of what it means to live? When they can just watch the same rehashed raunchy adult sitcom comedy animated series that gets shoved down their throat while going "damn I wish we had more new original things that took chances. oh well"
>What, you think guys here want to hear a touching existential examination of what it means to live?
Yes, but only if it's legitimately that, instead of being fakedeep like Midnight Gospel
>looks good
I dunno. Looks like fricking trash. But sell me on this.
LOL. There's a thread in the catalog RIGHT now with anons lamenting the Migration movie, and how little rule 34 it gets. If people are willing to fap to fricking ducks, not furries, not donald, but mallards, then this has no excuse. GTFO with that garbage.
>What, you think guys here want to hear a touching existential examination of what it means to live? When they can just watch the same rehashed raunchy adult sitcom comedy animated series that gets shoved down their throat while going "damn I wish we had more new original things that took chances. oh well"
I have no fricking clue what this is supposed to be, except when I'm told something isn't for me by creators working on the project, I tend to believe them.
>What, you think guys here want to hear a touching existential examination of what it means to live?
I don't need a fricking cartoon to contemplate on the purpose of an ephemeral existence, I do that on my own.
You're talking to the sort of "person" who would pull out their phone for distraction to avoid being alone with their own thoughts. Introspection is a novelty notion to give a form of distraction some extra spice, rather than something they'd ever do unprompted.
I watched the trailer but was unimpressed. The art direction was incredibly middling, if not cheap and lazy, and the concept being explored seem heavy-handed in execution. I don't need the trailer to run-down the plot of the entire series, but it gave the impression that multiple episodes are going to be re-hashing the same concept of 'life is what you make of it, but its your choice how you spend it' without showing themselves doing anything beyond it. The main character being uncomfortable with hoisting a hedonistic lifestyle in a society where that is considered the acceptable norm, even by the odd circumstance of an extinction event, is interesting on the surface, but the trailer didn't provide me with confidence of using that set-up for anything meaningful. It came across like they wanted to do an office workplace comedy, like many others on the market, but with the distinction of an apocalyptic setting and a unusual pro-work-effort disposition in an attempt to give it some identity to make it stand out. And if the series has other faculties, like writing or comedy, that would make it worth-while and elevate it above the unoriginal premise, it wasn't presented in the trailer.
>staff member or friend/family member of a staff member coming to Cinemaphile to whine how the people not giving the show a chance are all chuds
You should be grateful that you or someone you know was able to draw a paycheck working on this obvious garbage to begin with. Stop crying at the consumer for dismissing your openly ugly trash. It isn’t that she’s an older woman, it’s that the style is literally painfully ugly to look at. Be sure to convey that to whoever was in charge of charavter design, you moronic buffoon.
I'm going to give it a chance despite it looking fricking hideous but don't be shocked if I come back tearing it apart for being a shallow and/or presumptuous retread of On The Beach
The big red flag for me is it following one character for a whole series. It seems like it'd be impossible to really say anything about the human condition with that perspective, and anything you want to say about Carol probably shouldn't take 4 hours to say

alright so I'm giving it a shot and it's everything I was worried it was going to be: >needlessly flippant and presumptuous with how "other people" would treat the apocalypse in a way that isn't funny and undercuts any message they might have >main character is a vacant sad-sack with a grab-bag of comfort-seeking behaviors that literally everyone experiences >it treats these comfort-seeking behaviors and attempts to maintain routine as speshul and different and either sad or profound when they are mundane and should be portrayed as such >everything is incredible elongated and labored and BORING. I'm sure this would work in comic form but the pacing and main character are putting me to sleep at 10 in the morning >the animation isn't particularly expressive, which prevents these long boring scenes from having any emotional nuance from the performance - as much as I see this working better as a comic, I also see it working better in live action just by virtue of having human faces emote.
Unless this first episode switches tracks really fricking hard really fricking soon I'm out. I'm actually finding myself annoyed by how the writer portrays the world and I don't think I give a shit what they have to say about people in the rest of the episodes. I'm just picturing someone with intense anxiety that's also a huge butthole but thinks because they have anxiety and are introverted they can't also be a dick.

Carol is boring and the guy is pathetic and the whole thing is ponderous and not nearly as insightful as it so obviously wants to be.
This should be a short live action film not 220 hours of lifeless animation

Yeah, I'm looking at some of these clips and it's uncanny just how fricking boring and lifeless this show comes off. The only way it could be worse is if they added a running internal monologue for Carol so you can know how much she feels stuff about things.
>a touching existential examination of what it means to live
Whats the point? All shit like this has the exact same take of "you life has the meaning you give it to it". It's gutless and tiresome.
I don't hate the style entirely. Kinda bland. But the way they draw her eyes does bother me.
I'll watch it anyway. Not on release, but someday definitely. The premise sounds interesting.
But I also share anons' disdain for intentional ugly character designs. If I wanted to see homely people, I would go outside. My town is full of them. Or just look in the mirror, if I couldn't be bothered to leave my home.
I'm planning to check it out, it looks unique. You guys were shitting on shows like Pantheon, Scavengers Reign, and Fired on Mars. Don't make the same mistake again
>You guys were shitting on shows like Pantheon, Scavengers Reign, and Fired on Mars
No, there were a handful threads for them but they didn't garner much attention. If the same thing happens for this, then I'll know it's worth the watch
>You guys were shitting on shows like Pantheon, Scavengers Reign, and Fired on Mars. >Don't make the same mistake again
Don't make stuff up. They were liked here, just not popular.
Being adult-targetted animation doesn't mean it has to be ugly, and there's nothing wrong with people pointing that out.
Comparing animal frickers to waifugays is insulting to both. You're comparing apples to oranges.
No. I'm saying that anon is such a gigantic tool, he fricks up apples, oranges, and the entire goddam fruit stand. Anon is making the predictable, leftypolish play of "you only like shit you can fap to", challenge, when we have a WOULD thread in the catalog for Allah's sake.
This art style reeks of a certain sort soulless vapidity. It looks distinct because they need it to look distinct because high minded navel-gazing needs to have the vibe of some purposeful artistic intention, even if there's no actual intention or meaning behind the art direction. It has to look like something though, so they picked a handful of vague motifs. Big stupid looking eyes. Lots of soft, semi-circular curves. Flat, stiff posing and limited movement.... so it's easier to animate.
The appearance of artistic intent, but the execution of a bland corporate product.
There's an early draft of this shit that was done in the generic Brickleberry/"Adult animated series" style. It's animated exactly the same way, just with a slightly different handful of randomly chosen art gimmicks to make it not instantly turn away viewers who would otherwise instantly hate this shit.
Didn't mean to write that like there's definitely an early draft you can go check. That's just the feeling that I get because of the ways this mimics that exact cheap style of flat, boring animation
I assume the Sanic eyes are this show's equivalent of R&M's scribbly pupils or Hoop's eyebrows.
Guess it's a damned if you do situation where it either turns out perfectly generic, or purposely ugly
I know it'll use the art style well, but I honestly wish it didn't look like this in general.
I can see a lot of puppet rigging and tweening in the trailers.
The way a film is presented visually can make a difference. Looking at the characters express zero emotion and have puppet mouths, is hard to tolerate, even if the plot is really good.

Watching it right now and it kind of sucks. What were they thinking focusing so much of their time in the atmosphere when the animation is the cheapest one there is and the artstyle is hard to look at.
>looks good
It looks viscerally ugly in a similar manner to a pile of failed shows from the early 2010s. Mediocre animators need to realize that there’s a clear limit as to how purposefully ugly you can make your shit before people will just cringe and pass over your show on sight.
I wholeheartedly appreciate that AT LEAST it doesn't look like the millionth familyguy/bobburger clone. I weep because even a cartoon that tries to do something different for once didn't stop for a second to contemplate the possibility of having an actually pleasant style.
I wish animators/studios/producers or whoever is to blame abandoned this terrible mindset of, "no one will believe our show for adults is for adults if it's cute!"
this look like another case of ''why was this even animated??''

I don't know what this series wants to be. It's boring in a way that makes me think it's trying to be artsy and dramatic, but it keeps trying to be funny in an incredibly dated and flippant way that undercuts the drama. It's very tonally confused.
Nope
It ends before the collision
Well, "ends" might be a little too kind, that might imply some kind of conclusion or finality or climax.
It just kind of stops.
Honestly this sort of thing is just navel-gazing and I hope to god it doesn't inform more "adult animation" because this animation fricking sucks. It being animated and in the style it's in is a massive MASSIVE detriment. It sucks all possibility for nuanced emotion out of the script in exchange for cheap and INCREDIBLY played-out gags like Carol's parents being nudists.

Art direction matters in animation even more than writing.
Well, that's ugly as sin.

Scavengers Reign is worth watching. Seriously one of the best animated shows for adults in a very very very long time.
It wasn't that good outside of intriguing environment concepts. Story was mid. Pantheon is way better.

Pretty good so far, but it's hard to get used to Carol's voice acting. Also, the Amphibia reference caught me off guard.
