Just entered this thread. I have watched Gumball, every episode in fact, so I can say my opinion about the show. One way I can describe its humor for the most part is "bet you didn't see that coming". The type of jokes that would surprise you, and as a result, make you laugh. And while that has worked on me the first time I watch an episode, I find myself not laughing at them the second time or third time. If I had to say what I thought were the funniest seasons, I would say 2 and 3. Those felt like the experimental era of Gumball, when the writers were trying something new with the jokes. I find those to be the funniest primarly because there's a mismatch of numerous jokes that someone could get a chuckle out of at least one. I think it was after season 3 when the writers felt comfortable with the new style of writing, and as a result they tried less and less with the jokes as the show went on. I wouldn't say the show got worse per se, it's just once the experimental era ended, the writers stopped experimenting. At least, that's how I felt with the show.
Kinda agree but there were things they exprimented besides humor animation/visuals and artstyle changes of the show comes to mind, seriously Gumball's action scenes felt like watching a movie especially in the latter seasons.
Gumball's lore/plot the Void wheather you hate it or not, you have to admit Gumball's lore is at least unique and hasnt been done before compare to other cartoons at that time, hell Gumball's ending even if its a cliffhanger is experimental since no show didnt really do that, and besides were getting movie and s7 with the current news as of now.
So yes while I think the humor of the show stayed the same at S2 or S3, other factors that I mentioned made Gumball still experimental.
I was mainly talking about the show's jokes, I know that there are other things in Gumball that the writers were experimenting, but the humor was my main focus. I'm not much into the lore as much as other people are but I don't hate it.

NTA but it's when they stop the action or the pacing and explain the joke to the audience, or have that moment where they become snarky and point out the cliches, and it's not just a rare joke that happens maybe once an episode, but it happens every 5 seconds, and you can tell that they don't want to commit to a serious storyline, but don't want to commit to classic humor without trying to be smarmy about it.
think Rick and Morty, on both accounts when it wants to be super serious (but can't fully commit) or when it tries telling a joke (and they have to spend the whole episode explaining the joke)
