It was from last year's sketch dump. So Gomez had a bunch of pre-poses already half drawn and asked the patreons who should be in them? Cass/Steph being near the top got in. Hence this. MJ/Felicia he did two other pieces with instead.

I dunno, most Cassfans these days seem pretty chill. The whole "Cassgays would gladly delete the other Batgirls if it meant Cass got to be the one and only Batgirl" thing that pops up every now and then has never rung true to me because most Cassfans recognize her relationships with Babs and Steph as two of her most important ones and are generally favorable toward those characters (or at least Babs as Oracle. Cassfans and Stephfans both hate Babsgirl).
I've definitely seen some humble bragging that Cass has a book while steph doesn't and Babs is still just in Nightwing. There's some pity in how they say it but they aren't exactly upset that she seems set up as the "main" Batgirl going forward.

yeah I think that's the biggest thing is that steph is just too close to babs. Both are pretty much normal girls that became sidekicks/heroes and have a hopeful vibe. Steph only really worked when babs was oracle because then babs became the straight man i.e the mother of the group to a degree and the smart one this left space for steph to be the jokey and plucky teen babs used to be.

The problem with Steph and Babs stepping on each other's toes is that writers tend to take very broad strokes with them that don't really line up with their backgrounds or more in-depth appearances. Babs is middle-class prodigy who started superheroics to prove something to others, Steph is a poor and average girl who started superheroics to get back at her criminal father specifically. Saying they're jokey or plucky is detrimentally vague. Damian is jokey and plucky, but no one says he's similar to Babs and Steph. It's only an issue because of the writers themselves. I honestly wouldn't use jokey or plucky to describe either Babs or Steph.

Classic Babs wasn't really a sidekick, a lot of her stories were solo stories and she was shown more as an adult heroine and straitlaced. Batgirl Year One around the late 90's/2000's has her start being Batgirl at 16, but her whole thing is that she takes herself really seriously for the most part compared to Dick.

It's one thing to imagine it as an actual resurrection, since the two already interacted in the afterlife, but it would've been a real show to watch them try and retcon her into being comatose AND explain how Cass dying would magically wake her up at the same time.
It would've almost certainly, irreversibly divided the Cass and Steph fandoms. Which was sort of Didio's thing; playing fans against each other or against creators for drama.
It's been sort of forgotten but people were pissed off when Batgirl #1 came out in 2009. There was some hate art towards Steph and people pissed off at her as a character specifically. Cass' heal turn ironically got her new fans who checked out her solo series and became invested in her after it ended and were upset her second shot ended so quick, and didn't have any attachment to steph who had been gone for 4 years and only sporadically appearing since she came back within the last year. So there were a lot of people who really only knew her from War Games and she came off as an undeserving frickup.
Really if not for them pumping the breaks the last few months before New 52 with bringing Cass back and having her seemingly have something to do coming up that was also taken away by the reboot, there'd be the same uneasiness because then it remains Steph's book as the reason Cass went away and not the reboot

As someone who got into Cass after her heel turn, I remember being really mad after reading the first issue of Steph's series. I've mellowed out since but it still hurts how little Steph's series acknowledges Cass as part of the Batgirl legacy.

Only Tempest/Garth seemed to be relatively ok because aquaman was low priority in general and Phil Jiminez loves that character and he was a DC house boy. And even then it was more apathy

Not totally sure where I land on that one. Stephanie finally getting Bruce's express approval feels very earned and cathartic, and doesn't really change her isolated narrative much, since Bruce never actually tells her it was him. Likewise, he never shared that wish with anyone but Cassandra (and Alfred), so every choice made and battle fought on that journey was Steph's own. Bruce "giving her" Batgirl was really more an expression of faith in her ability to rise to the occasion and take it, if offered the chance. No one was going to swoop in and carry her to the finish line if she gave up, and in The Road Home he's still assessing her performance to see if it was actually the right call.
On the other hand, knowing it was planned to a degree does take away from the spontaneous chaos that makes the Reborn status quo so compelling. There's also Cass and her own relationship with Bruce to consider. Any Cassbro could write an essay on why either presented explanation for Cass leaving Batgirl in Steph's hands is questionable at best, but the idea that Bruce would be the one to tell her to hit the road when Gotham would be at its most vulnerable and Cass at her most adrift, is definitely a hard pill to swallow.
Choice, I think, is the big factor that makes me not mind it terribly. It might've been Bruce's choice to tell Cass to hand off Batgirl, but it was Cass' choice to trust her enough to actually follow through, and Steph's choice to make something out of that trust.

It's depended. Nightwing in the 2000's was pretty aggressive in general so he was at odds with her, most notably in the followup miniseries to her time being evil where Dick didn't trust her, or Outsiders.
But he was initially fairly friendly with her if a bit distant to her due to her being so awkward due to how she was raised. He did offer to help with things she needed in a mentor/big brother sort of way. But yeah, unfortunately it went sour for a while until Gates of Gotham.
really she's more of a sister to babs, than she is to any other batfamily member. Also really if you want to see the batfam relationship stuff I'd say check out that webtoon but idk if Cass is even in it

She is an is considered one of the better, more accurately depicted characters(though keep in mind the series does tend to cutesy and sand down edges for it's purpose as a Slice of Life comic)

With Cass, cain himself felt like Bruce took her away from him(which is why Bruce Wayne Murderer happened) and Shiva for the longest time distanced herself from being her mother. So Cass felt connected to the others in a family way. Dick and Tim mostly approached her as a sister too, or at least acted as a brotherly figure. I do agree that it does feel kinda weird to have people who met over the age of 16 consider themselves siblings, but I guess you can contextualize it in the same sort of brother/sisterhood people in close knit military groups have.
I almost feel that needs even more context but yeah sounds interesting. I swear everytime I go to a comic thread I realize how little I truly know about a character or comics.

The miniseries from 2008. It's crap you don't really need to read, it gives Cass a half-sister by way of David cain, though. It was basically meant to put her back into the fold but then it didn't last.

i guess with bruce at least we know he adopted the robins so even if at times he felt un paternal we knew he was there. Plus in the end cass is hard because the robin's usually are loud mouths so they will voice both sides of the convo making it easy to portray the father son dynamic unlike cass who either can't talk is to moronic to talk or is quiet as a church mouse so it's hard for to silent characters to be open with their emotions. It's also why i guess I always felt her connect with babs and steph was deeper as both make genuine efforts and communicate it well especially babs who usually takes on the motherly role for cass like teachering her how to read and write and basically how to be a good person/normal

What's funny about that is , yeah she had some gaps, but overall Steph was one of the senior heroes of her generation pre-Flashpoint. She started before most of the Young Justice gen except Tim. Sure, she didn't have as much experience with bigger events, but she still could hold her own with a few powered villains and was on the extended YJ roster.
Which is why I think this lineup would've been good character development; Steph's basically the vet of this team. would've been amusing to see everyone turn to Kara thinking she knows what she's doing and her turning to Steph because she went to college, and Steph having the creeping realization she's the adult in the room.
Same thing with Cass being part of the Outsiders and the JL Elite, she's interesting to see in teams because she's a natural loner, but makes close bonds with people.

It’s just weird to me. I had been under the impression she became Spoiler at 14, which gave everything some good breathing room and justified how good she gets over the years. Whereas the actual number of 15 makes it all very tight, gives her a grand total of one year of collective vigilante experience, and would logically make her almost always shaking off some rust and trying to get back into the rhythm.
BQM might’ve been trying to remedy those problems when he rather randomly suggested she was 19 at the start of her Batgirl run despite Tim still being 17 over in RR, but since we explicitly know she was 16 during War Games, it doesn’t really add any time in the areas that actually need it.

Given how much time happens in terms of events between her first appearance and her getting pregnant I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think she started at 14, given she was pregnant at 15. She's slightly older than Tim who started around 13. So assuming she's like a year and a half older or so, I can see her being 19 by her time as Batgirl.

Saying they're jokey or plucky is detrimentally vague. Damian is jokey and plucky, but no one says he's similar to Babs and Steph. It's only an issue because of the writers themselves. I honestly wouldn't use jokey or plucky to describe either Babs or Steph.

Classic Babs wasn't really a sidekick, a lot of her stories were solo stories and she was shown more as an adult heroine and straitlaced. Batgirl Year One around the late 90's/2000's has her start being Batgirl at 16, but her whole thing is that she takes herself really seriously for the most part compared to Dick.
The more plucky, quipy Babs doesn't really start until TNBA. The thing is that's mainly been influential how she's been adapted since.

It would've almost certainly, irreversibly divided the Cass and Steph fandoms. Which was sort of Didio's thing; playing fans against each other or against creators for drama.
It's been sort of forgotten but people were pissed off when Batgirl #1 came out in 2009. There was some hate art towards Steph and people pissed off at her as a character specifically. Cass' heal turn ironically got her new fans who checked out her solo series and became invested in her after it ended and were upset her second shot ended so quick, and didn't have any attachment to steph who had been gone for 4 years and only sporadically appearing since she came back within the last year. So there were a lot of people who really only knew her from War Games and she came off as an undeserving frickup.
Really if not for them pumping the breaks the last few months before New 52 with bringing Cass back and having her seemingly have something to do coming up that was also taken away by the reboot, there'd be the same uneasiness because then it remains Steph's book as the reason Cass went away and not the reboot

As someone who got into Cass after her heel turn, I remember being really mad after reading the first issue of Steph's series. I've mellowed out since but it still hurts how little Steph's series acknowledges Cass as part of the Batgirl legacy.

Only Tempest/Garth seemed to be relatively ok because aquaman was low priority in general and Phil Jiminez loves that character and he was a DC house boy. And even then it was more apathy
Not totally sure where I land on that one. Stephanie finally getting Bruce's express approval feels very earned and cathartic, and doesn't really change her isolated narrative much, since Bruce never actually tells her it was him. Likewise, he never shared that wish with anyone but Cassandra (and Alfred), so every choice made and battle fought on that journey was Steph's own. Bruce "giving her" Batgirl was really more an expression of faith in her ability to rise to the occasion and take it, if offered the chance. No one was going to swoop in and carry her to the finish line if she gave up, and in The Road Home he's still assessing her performance to see if it was actually the right call.
On the other hand, knowing it was planned to a degree does take away from the spontaneous chaos that makes the Reborn status quo so compelling. There's also Cass and her own relationship with Bruce to consider. Any Cassbro could write an essay on why either presented explanation for Cass leaving Batgirl in Steph's hands is questionable at best, but the idea that Bruce would be the one to tell her to hit the road when Gotham would be at its most vulnerable and Cass at her most adrift, is definitely a hard pill to swallow.
Choice, I think, is the big factor that makes me not mind it terribly. It might've been Bruce's choice to tell Cass to hand off Batgirl, but it was Cass' choice to trust her enough to actually follow through, and Steph's choice to make something out of that trust.

It's depended. Nightwing in the 2000's was pretty aggressive in general so he was at odds with her, most notably in the followup miniseries to her time being evil where Dick didn't trust her, or Outsiders.
But he was initially fairly friendly with her if a bit distant to her due to her being so awkward due to how she was raised. He did offer to help with things she needed in a mentor/big brother sort of way. But yeah, unfortunately it went sour for a while until Gates of Gotham.

i guess with bruce at least we know he adopted the robins so even if at times he felt un paternal we knew he was there. Plus in the end cass is hard because the robin's usually are loud mouths so they will voice both sides of the convo making it easy to portray the father son dynamic unlike cass who either can't talk is to moronic to talk or is quiet as a church mouse so it's hard for to silent characters to be open with their emotions. I think Frank Miller sort of started it with DKR and calling Jason a "Good soldier". I think people take it a little too literally for my taste; I kinda prefer no think of it too much in realistic terms and think of it with some suspension of disbelief

Definitely with Babs and Steph since they often lived with one parent and didn't really see Batman as a father figure. Plus both of them have had relationships with Robins.
With Cass, cain himself felt like Bruce took her away from him(which is why Bruce Wayne Murderer happened) and Shiva for the longest time distanced herself from being her mother. So Cass felt connected to the others in a family way. Dick and Tim mostly approached her as a sister too, or at least acted as a brotherly figure. I do agree that it does feel kinda weird to have people who met over the age of 16 consider themselves siblings, but I guess you can contextualize it in the same sort of brother/sisterhood people in close knit military groups have.

I love Steph so, but I’ve been nailing down her timeline recently, and when you realize she spent 2/3 of the years she was Spoiler not actually being Spoiler because of various instances of dumbassery (at least 7 months off for the pregnancy, 2-3 to realistically heal from a broken leg, the year-long Africa retreat), you begin to wonder if the Bats were right to treat her like an inexperienced clown.
Its why I'm not much of a steph fan she's like the batgirl that never was. Everyone acts like she has a close relationship with Cass as well but she's kind of the odd man out on the Batgirl sisterhood as well. But yeah now steph is in this weird kind of limbo she has a bit of nothing going for her specifically as some anons were talking about somewhere above.
What's funny about that is , yeah she had some gaps, but overall Steph was one of the senior heroes of her generation pre-Flashpoint. She started before most of the Young Justice gen except Tim.
