It's nowhere near as good, they rewrote her origin completely and made it vastly shittier. They made her costume shitty too, completely unsexy.
Only arguably good idea they had in Nu52 was giving her a superhero name of her own that was unrelated to Batman, which could have reduced the insane jealousy of the most vocal babsgays if they had done it back in 1999, but they fricked that up too by making it the generic title of Mother's foot clan flunkies. It should have been something she chooses for herself as a sign that she rejects both of her villainous parents. It's nonsensical and unusable when it's tied to the B&RE villain.

Her introduction in No Man's Land is what made me give up reading it the first time around. Granted, at the time it was because I didn't know much about Huntress or why they were such huge dicks to her going around as Batgirl, so it made Cass' instant-acceptance feel even more ridiculous, but even on re-reads it feels like the punctuation mark of the arc's declining quality and degredation of its premise.

Id probably try and flesh out the ones she has already, there's some potential there, particularly with mad dog and the CIA guy. Lazara would also be a super fitting antagonist for cass (person who values life vs person who hates the way they've been brought back).
As far as original ones I always feel having someone that is absolutely terrible at fighting but has numbers on their side would be a good foil. And for pre-existing characters, hugo strange and zsas are really good for her.

The stitches were originally to cover the portion of Batman's face that is normally visible. But most artists forget that. Honestly after 25 years I think it's time for the stitches to go.
See, I don't want the stitches gone, because they've become kind of an "iconic" feature for her. People see a batsuit with stitches and think "oh, that's Cass". But I'd like to see them presented like they're meant to be there, instead of a hasty repair job. The Ghost/Batgirl mini kind of had what I have in mind.

Genuine question: What is it about Cass that resulted in her having such a vocal fanbase? I know people have different reasons for liking characters, but given how much people talk about her there must be one or two aspects to her that engender that type of support. To her vocal fans: What are Cass’s two best traits as a character?
The way her first stories were written, which in turn, reflected on her character. In the cape world a massacre, a planet blowing up is mostly just a triggering incident. In Cass' world, a single homicide is momentous, gives her pause, puts a mirror on how she processes the world and her own place in it.
I'd blame DiDio for the first question ironically.
He just kept hammering the character over and over and OVER again with bad stuff. Then washed his hands saying, "IT WASN'T ME!" Then tossed the character aside like a used toy. Fans can only take so much of the bull.
Then you have the online fans who do enjoy the character. Creating that kind of environment is just gonna make the fans who like the character more vocal at the drop of a dime.
For the second question its the world you see of Gotham past just usual Gotham Rogues. That the city just eats you alive. Sure it ain't Opal, but it has its problems rooted at the core. For all of Cass's great skill and being part of the Bat Family. Not everything can be just "happy endings". She has to figure out new ways to keep up this fight for herself and justice.

I fell in love with her originally because she was a perfect blend of two of my favorite characters, Snake-Eyes and Alita (of Battle Angel fame). And for 20+ years I have been waiting for her to return to that state of being simultaneously cool, mysterious, supremely competent, oozing with sex appeal and with a little bit of childlike cuteness on top of that. It's just the chef's-kiss-perfect mixture of charm points. And almost all creators frick up the recipe and miss some or all of them.
As for why she developed a cult, it's the same type of reason why Hal Jordan did - she was very overtly screwed over by DC editors and writers who for whatever reason (religious babshomosexualry?) hated her and wanted her to be gone. That consolidated the resistance, so to speak. It began with her being snubbed by Loeb in Hush and got progressively worse until she was flat out banned from all use for 7+ years, a move that can only be explained by tremendous spite.

Cass has three currently: Young Justice (which adapts/modifies her Batman & Robin Eternal origin), Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham (basically a Frankenstein of herself, Tim, and Carrie Kelly), and BatWheels (which is Steph, but the series has done a few poses and has the bro/sis stuff with Nightwing recently, but also legacy issues in the episode she and her bike are bullied vocally by Harley and her vehicle).

Extremely botched attempt at giving Cass a heel arc. The writer Beechen and editor Tomasi did absolutely no research at all and basically turned the character into a joke overnight.
But why her
Supposedly Didio had the idea of shuffling around the Bat characters post-Infinite Crisis so that Nightwing would become the dead one, Jason would become a good guy and Cass would take Jason's place as the "bad sheep". Nightwing's death was canceled due to fan outrage but they went through with Cass's part anyway, and it went horribly. I'm still not sure if it was the result of none of the people involved giving the least shit about her, or was it deliberate sabotage. Both are plausible. In any case she was outrageously out of character the whole arc and on top of that lost a fistfight to Tim Drake, which would require her to be comatose to actually happen.

Mind you, I don't think this was inherently a terrible idea. A temporary antihero arc could have added back some of the edge that she had lost over the years. But it's the kind of delicate thing that needs to executed extremely carefully by people who know what the frick they're doing, and DC did the opposite, gave her to people who literally knew nothing about her and weren't afraid to let it show.

I think the one I legit hate the most is Cloonan Batgirls. Beechen Robin did more damage to the character, but Cloonan Batgirls took a god-tier idea for a comic and turned it into trash by, essentially, treating the characters like they're moronic children instead of proper crimefighters.
As for the best individual issue, that's a good question and I should give it a bit of a think. Off the top of my head I really like Batgirl #11, the one where David Cain steals back her home videos of Cass. Cass herself barely appears in it but it cements in how important she is to her dad, almost like they were prepping him for a face turn.
Anyway I should pick something else, there's too little of her in it. I'll think about it.

nah it's more than that. Part of Cass' story that is never explored is that she's something of a legend even before she became batgirl. She was dumpster diving and smacking people around. Being the new spooky batgirl who beats down people is what let people like Shiva put 2 and 2 together and home in.

Not really. Like I said, the height of her contribution was beating up 5 unnamed and insignificant silhouetted goons, something even Stephanie could have done. “It shouldn’t take me too long.” He said to Cassandra, grabbing Haybales in both hands floating slightly
into the air, and tossing them onto the loft. “Then we can go and get Coffee.” He joked as Cassandra
scowled.

“I figured.” He said, watching her move to the barn door. “...So what DO you want?” he asked, “You drive
all the way to Smallville just to see me?”
