I'd agree that X-force was her last great appearance, her very first run (as x23) was pretty all right but it dropped everything that had been set up before especially with Hellion (suprising that i like those two, no?).
Her getting over her past is great, but it should have happened on page not off-page, it defeats the point outside of that.
Ironically both of them gravitate much more towards social people, and Cass is much much more anti murder than laura is due to obvious reasons. Dont think they'd be super friendly, but theyd understand each other well.

Just have the entire arc make readers think that Cass is 100% down for letting her die, only when she's actually facing down death for Cass to save her without hesitation. Show that no matter how much Cass might hate someone or wish they were dead, she's never going to let anyone die if she can help it. I don't know if it'd be worth dealing with the fan outrage, but it'd be a solidly Cass thing to do - save someone she hates.
I think if anything that'd make it work, now it just comes off as a botched joke that has a bit of a low fundation with the character in question, what you're suggesting seems almost deliberate as an attempt to rile people up only to then show that you do understand the character after all.

Admittedly it'd be rather inflammatory, but I think fans often have knee-jerk reactions when something doesn't immediately play out like they expect it to and with social media they now have the ability to immediately express their outrage to both other fans and even creators which can have a negative impact on storytelling. Even within her solo Cass grappled with the difficulty of her morality and was often not a nice person, and I wonder how many of her fans actually bother to remember what her solo was like.

I dont disagree, however id say. Cass's morality was always very much centered on her not killing (which made gabyrch's ending for her so bad imo) and being obsessive about preserving life. Her not being that nice is true, but that's not what's in this book, if anything this book is presenting her as being overly nice in social situations but colder to her enemies to contrast with steph more.
Nah, in general. I guess it finally dawned on me that those characters are not going anywhere interesting and this is the best you'll get in a long while.

I think Cass making a bitter joke isn't much of an issue outside it being a cheap cliche. We are talking about a woman who once put some guy in cardiac arrest just to make a point. But really it's just that the book is making no one happy. Its not even bad in a way that makes it easy to drop, it's disappointing in a way that still gives you hope which makes it so much worse. But I think with this issue we've gotten to the point where the readers are signalling the honeymoon phase is over and that they're not going to support a title out of fan obligation.

I feel like the best thing to address Cass' seemingly OoC moments is explaining that they've been hanging out together so much Cass and Steph have rubbed mannerisms off on each other so Cass is getting more directly sarcastic (as opposed to subtly sarcastic) and cursing more and Steph is wearing darker clothing and working out more.

Thing is, that makes both characters far more interchangable, which is the last thing you want, and clearly not what they're doing. Cass joking about something so fundamental is off even if she's trying to be sarcastic, because it comes off as her being geniune within the actual issue.

Its an alright moment when looked at in a vacuum, but it is off even for YJ's Cass.
I think the issue lays in that Steph's personality hasnt been too consitent since her return, and a lot of people already distort her in the same way this book did, so it didnt raise any alarms, and Babs made a turnaround in the last issue before this one. Cass's is just such a basic error that everyone/anyone can notice it

Reading it, the reaction seems overblown. She's clearly joking. Let Cass have a sense of humor instead of just immediately brooding over what she did as a kid. I get that its a formative part of her characrer and all, but letting her be able to joke about some things is a healthy character development. At this point, Cass has been hanging around Steph for years, is in a pretty good place emotionally, let her be fun.

I'd say the issue is that it just comes off as the writer not knowing who Cass is and just off. If you make Cass joke in that way you loose something of what she is, a lot of her humor being stilted and very unique to her is just lost.

I tought that the outsiders run was pretty allright, nothing particularly bad. Repeating Cass's arc from Tec a bit, but a bit less logical in-universe and more meta.

They're in one of the TLJ behind the scenes featurettes. Johnson talks about how Rose as a character was based heavily on the kind of girls he wanted to date during high school and that he specifically casted Kelly Marie Tran because he thought she didn't "fit" in the SW universe. This is compounded by the same documentary showing that Rose was intentionally styled to be as frumpy as possible with the intent that she would put on a fancy dress and glam up during the Canto Bight scene, only for him to completely change the scene during filming. Her last good characterization is probably X-Force, I'm ok with her getting over her past and her conditioning but they can do better than stoic but quipy 20 year old.
I'd agree that X-force was her last great appearance, her very first run (as x23) was pretty all right but it dropped everything that had been set up before especially with Hellion (suprising that i like those two, no?).

I think if anything that'd make it work, now it just comes off as a botched joke that has a bit of a low fundation with the character in question, what you're suggesting seems almost deliberate as an attempt to rile people up only to then show that you do understand the character after all.

Admittedly it'd be rather inflammatory, but I think fans often have knee-jerk reactions when something doesn't immediately play out like they expect it to and with social media they now have the ability to immediately express their outrage to both other fans and even creators which can have a negative impact on storytelling. Even within her solo Cass grappled with the difficulty of her morality and was often not a nice person, and I wonder how many of her fans actually bother to remember what her solo was like.
I dont disagree, however id say. Cass's morality was always very much centered on her not killing (which made gabyrch's ending for her so bad imo) and being obsessive about preserving life. Her not being that nice is true, but that's not what's in this book, if anything this book is presenting her as being overly nice in social situations but colder to her enemies to contrast with steph more.

I think most of the complaining is a complete overreaction, but I also think this is a case where it's not entirely about Cass' characterization but rather it serves as the straw that broke the camel's back for people who have issues with the comic.
I dunno how much of an overreaction it is, given that its a pretty basic cass 101 thing. However it does compound with the other stuff, i do agree.
I think Cass making a bitter joke isn't much of an issue outside it being a cheap cliche. We are talking about a woman who once put some guy in cardiac arrest just to make a point. But really it's just that the book is making no one happy. Its not even bad in a way that makes it easy to drop, it's disappointing in a way that still gives you hope which makes it so much worse. But I think with this issue we've gotten to the point where the readers are signalling the honeymoon phase is over and that they're not going to support a title out of fan obligation.
The thing is more that its Cass making that joke, in the same book where she lacks a lot of her cass-isms and steph is also just kinda bland in general. But true.
I think it could work if they didn't signal it was a joke. Just have the entire arc make readers think that Cass is 100% down for letting her die, only when she's actually facing down death for Cass to save her without hesitation. Show that no matter how much Cass might hate someone or wish they were dead, she's never going to let anyone die if she can help it. I don't know if it'd be worth dealing with the fan outrage, but it'd be a solidly Cass thing to do - save someone she hates.
I feel like the best thing to address Cass' seemingly OoC moments is explaining that they've been hanging out together so much Cass and Steph have rubbed mannerisms off on each other so Cass is getting more directly sarcastic (as opposed to subtly sarcastic) and cursing more and Steph is wearing darker clothing and working out more.
Thing is, that makes both characters far more interchangable, which is the last thing you want, and clearly not what they're doing. Cass joking about something so fundamental is off even if she's trying to be sarcastic, because it comes off as her being geniune within the actual issue.
Duke and Steph have never actually interacted in a comic set in the main earth, and only once in wfa. And given how Duke's framed as a brother figure that seems unlikley.

While it’s good to see more people finally realize how mediocre the book actually is, it’s disheartening to see that a lot of them were willing to put up with it until Cass’ personality was the one being messed with.
Its an alright moment when looked at in a vacuum, but it is off even for YJ's Cass.
I think the issue lays in that Steph's personality hasnt been too consitent since her return, and a lot of people already distort her in the same way this book did, so it didnt raise any alarms, and Babs made a turnaround in the last issue before this one. Cass's is just such a basic error that everyone/anyone can notice it

Reading it, the reaction seems overblown. She's clearly joking. Let Cass have a sense of humor instead of just immediately brooding over what she did as a kid. I get that its a formative part of her characrer and all, but letting her be able to joke about some things is a healthy character development. At this point, Cass has been hanging around Steph for years, is in a pretty good place emotionally, let her be fun.
Same thing with her cursing in the Tim Drake special today.
I'd say the issue is that it just comes off as the writer not knowing who Cass is and just off. If you make Cass joke in that way you loose something of what she is, a lot of her humor being stilted and very unique to her is just lost.
