World where some people in the world can do magic, but amongst those people they can only do one kind of magic.
But then there are special people that can do all kinds, like the big bad overlord who is extremely powerful. The book follows an undergorund organization who want to take down the big bad.

I read trashy fantasy books while commuting to work. How's this one in comparison to second apocalypse?

          Anonymous

I wouldn't call it trashy, I was absolutely hooked on it.
Felt like a bit of a bait and switch with the protagonist but oh well.

Probably because getting caught is part of his plan. It only works because he’s engineered himself into becoming a martyr and briefly tricked people into thinking he came back from the dead.
If you follow the standard Hollywood formula, where the established male character is turned into an emasculated b***h, the whole plan falls apart unless you also make him a villainous schemer that completely bullshits his escapades.

Yeah, true. He had a real heroic sacrifice and plan without needing to be torn down and shown to be useless first. Wouldn't be surprised if they did that in an adaptation though.

is it decent fantasy or teenage level fantasy

Well, it certainly isn't cosmic-rape kino. But if manga/lite-novels written by a Mormon who insists on magic having to parallel physics with things like conservation of mass and momentum interests you then check it out, I guess. I think the fact that first book is an oceans 11 heist movie is kinda fun, but they aren't great.

But if it’s in service to making a very good story with a crushing dark atmosphere then it’s not trashy. Rape orcs are terrifying

generic young adult rebels overthrow the evil empire trash, the magic system revolves around some people being able to eat certain metals to get different superpowers and others get powers from being in contact with metal. vin, the girl on the cover, is one of the superspecial ones who can have all the superpowers at once.
the sequel series is better, it's cowboys uncovering a conspiracy and doesn't have the hero as stupidly overpowered as vin

Vin specifically has training and there's nothing special about her. She's a skilled mistborn but her greatest victories are due to luck, circumstance, or knowledge.

I don't remember much about the second and third, but the first book is a bit bad since the girl and the gang spend 80% of the book trying to come up with a 300 iq plan to overthrow the evil empire, only for the last chapter to have nothing of that matter and everything is resolved in a suicide attack by a couple of people

It's a fantasy heist story about an evil emperor who's split the world into a system of oppressive nobles and dehumanized workers. A group of quirky rogues with magical powers start a rebellion to overthrow the emperor. The main character is a teenage girl who has a rare magical power that makes her useful to the rebellion.

No I wouldn't. Fantasy always been a genre that's attracted masses of untalented hacks who are more interested in showing off their 'system' than writing a good story with interesting and likeable characters. If it's not the number one self published genre it's definitely top three besides Supernatural Romance and YAshit.

The problem now is that the legion of hacks self publishing are still better than what actually gets published these days.
It’s a fricking slog trying to wade through self insert isekai/litrpg on one side, obnoxious soapbox from someone the publisher bought a Hugo on the other , and blatant porn with a paper thin disguise wedged in between

Fair enough but it's still a dead genre with nothing worth looking at as far as I am concerned. The best fantasy writing being done today are video games which is fricking hilarious.

You’re probably right. The genre isn’t going to get better, not until publishers stop using residual sales from good authors to fund talentless diversity hires, which itself won’t happen until Larry is gutted and lynched with his own entrails.
It’s only going to mutate into different forms of shit, like when YA mutated and split into progressive soapbox on one side and shameless fapfiction on the other, or Tolkien ripoffs turned to edgy got ripoffs, which turned to litrpg.
I am morbidly curious as to what comes next, though. My bet is shitty westernised Xianxia, which is already starting to peak its head

I don't really like this type of fantasy but I have to give the author some small credit in that he admitted he only was published because he knew someone. His friend met a publishing agent at a party and introduced the two. Only way he got his book in.

You’re probably right. The genre isn’t going to get better, not until publishers stop using residual sales from good authors to fund talentless diversity hires, which itself won’t happen until Larry is gutted and lynched with his own entrails.

Playing the Devil’s advocate, the reason that self published shit exploded is due to traditional publishing refusing to hire any writers that produce stories anyone wants to fricking read.
Despite being rife with bandwagon hopping hacks, self published/web original authors actually want people to read their books, rather than get as big an advance as they can for being a minority and then laugh as the publisher eats shit when their books don’t sell.

No devil's advocate about it, you're correct. Either be a black woman and publish garbage no one will read like black pink haired dwarven midgets getting drunk and fricking things (real book), or play to online trends and write isekai sloppa for seasonal anime homies. They may want people to read their books but they still have to play to consumer trends.

My wife loves these horny fantasy schlock books. Which is fine by me, I get the benefit. I've been reading them to capitalize on it, and man they suck. It would be so easy to write this style of erotica. I think I may do it under a female pen name.

              Anonymous

To expand on that. The reason they blew up with women is the first book is basically beauty and the beast with katniss as the woman, and a brooding Elf king as the beast (and theres an evil witch with a curse and some ntr in the finale). Then the second book she has ptsd from the ending of the first book, and an even richer, sexier, and more understanding elf king comes along and rescues her and makes her realize the first sexy elf king was an abusive boyfriend.
Imagine if 50 shades of grey had a sequel where the mediocre woman got rescued from the billionaire by a trillionaire who was also a therapist. Throw in some random young adult fiction magic powers and you've got a woman moment phenomenon.

First one is pretty bland, its more the long slow seduction and badly written romance then the actual sex scenes are pretty undescriptive.
Second one is a lot more adventure and action, both in the bedroom and out. They finally have a more explicit sex scene and some pretty explicit foreplay scenes towards the back of the book. From what my wife says they get hornier as they go.
If you want to hook a girl that's into these books, tell her you want to try the series out and discuss it as you go. Guaranteed to get her wetter than Vancouver island.

      I second Bakker
Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun
      Vance’s Lyonesse
All three make Martin seem laughable by comparison

        Excellent for expanding your vocabulary.

I remember after I was obsessed with ASOIAF when I was 16-17 I decided to read more fantasy and literally everywhere recommended this series and I got to the first scene where they used different metals to move through the air and push/pull or some shit and I gave up immediately
are there any fantasy writers on GRRM's level? I'm not even being ironic

The Black Company by Glen Cook ran so that GRRM could crawl. Try that.

Sapkowski's hussite series is ok, but it's more like witcher in it's tone with "haha humans are stupid and monsters are humane" bit. Still, a fun read.

Don't. It's pretty shit. Logen and Sand are the only remotely good characters. The tropes are pathetic and shallow. Overall a 5/10.

The grimdark is pretty good, but it's pretty much "what if LotR but everyone is a c**t bucket"
Still a somewhat enjoyable read, with some based scenes (unfortunately Abercrombie gets blue pulled in the spin offs, he wrote one with a strong independent woman just to prove it)

ASoIaF is unfortunately in a league of its own when it comes to fantasy. Even other work by GRRM isn't a good, although I only read the steamboat one.

Now, first of all. ASOIAF is garbage and GRRMs writing sucks dick.

And to truly make you realize this, you should read the series Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. It's the series that very literally inspired GRRM to write fantasy. After reading it you will realize what GRRM tried to ape and how he failed spectacularly at it.

I actually read the whole book and it was a solid 3/10. The fey sex party fantasy, the self-insert rapist killing fantasy, the cuck shit, the obvious gay relationship with the demon apprentice. It was all too much. Anyone even remotely interested in this title should read literally anything else.

That's pretty much my take on it. Very workmanlike writing, characters mostly just move according to the whims of the plot, but the plot is pretty good with some fun twists and surprises, so it works out.

As long as she’s cute, tomboyish, short and most importantly WHITE then I’ll be happy. Kelsier would be much more fun to cast. Needs charisma but also underlying anger/violence. So like Matt smith but more handsome and not inbred

Listen, sometimes you don't have the mental fortitude to suffer through the emotionally tiring slog a book like Deadhouse Gates is. Or the headache inducing ponderings of what life is for immortals that live for 100 000s of years is like in Forge of Darkness from the very mindfricking perspective of one of these insanely long lived dudes.

Sometimes you just wanna read cool action scenes that reads like a mix of Michael Bay and a shonen battle anime.
