this song is burnt into my mind because I have one oddly specific clear childhood memory of getting to the demon ruins for the first time as a low level scrub and I had never gone so deep in the wildy before or been around enemies like the greater demons before, so to me it was cool as hell and super atmospheric . I remember having to quit the game while still hiding in the ruins to go to the farmers market with my dad and I got really good ice cream and buffalo pepperoni, then when we got back I went straight to the pc and rushed back to safety
kino story. my best wildy experience was standing near the edge when a bunch of noobs were gathering a party to go and attack high level players as a swarm. about 20+ of us gathered in our shit gear loaded with food and pots. we ran deep into the wildy and started killing level 126s by just swarming them. many of us died but a great deal of loot was taken and shared amongst us. felt like such a rush at the time

they introduced scam protection not long after where the trade had to be equal in value and if you tried to do the switcheroo, a red exclamation mark would start flashing on the item you switched. it didn't last too long sadly but it was fun whilst it lasted.

im convinced that the reason it (and many other games) appealed to me so much as a kid is that i was fricking shit at it. i was never doing any of this efficient grinding stuff, never made much money or anything like that, so everything was much more significant to me. I remember it was a fricking huge deal for me when i got an adament battle axe and i sure got my monies worth out of that thing, i tell you. and getting an adament and even mithril piece of armour was significant
now that im older i can make practically more gold in a day than i did throughout my entire childhood and i blow through the levels so fast i dont really get to appreciate anything the way U used to and it seems virtually impossible to replicate that experience
this was also pre-GE so i think that made a huge difference too. one thing i remember from the pre-ge days was that stores were actually useful. now it seems like theres no point in 90% of the shit in game since the GE does it all. i remember people usedto crowd into the general stores and the inventory would be full and you would just hang out there and you never knew what was going to pop up

I started the game with a group of friends from school and one was an archer, the rest were warriors. They didn't appreciate my wizardly ways and would always rib me for it so I challenged them to a fight in the wildy, me vs all of them. I had just got ancient magic and I froze them all up and sucked out their blood with the burst spell. After they were dealt with I dds spammed the archer down and that was that. I had won... but at what cost? I was disinvited from the lunch table and they never played runescape with me again.
I still remember thinking I could easily 1v1 some homosexual wizard in wildy and he instantly snared me then used that stupid iceblock spell that does frick loads of damage and prevents you from moving until I was dead. you can't even eat food between hand, he just kept casting until I was dead. I remember scamming in the West bank of Varrock with FREE GEM CUTTING and FREE ARMOR TRIMMING. I remember in the summer time playing in the morning when the servers reset and all the shop inventories went to full, I would world hop buying up all the death runes in the shop in Port Sarim, then go to world 1 and sell them for a profit. Remember my first dscimmy. I remember the fally riots when they banned wildy and getting banned for spamming "flash2: JAGEX MUNCH MY BUTTHOLE!" I remember being really happy when I discovered that the word "douche" was not censored by their language filter, so I could call people douches.Then eventually my first santa, green/blue/red h'ween, party hats. I remember giving away my santa to a random player when I quit after the fally riots (I came back a year later for another few years of playing but it was towards the end of my career).
