Personally I alternate between male and female characters unless there are specific reasons to be one or the other, such as: voice, animations, character model, gear and weapon choices.

How you choose to pilot a fictional character through a series of moral quandaries is entertaining but ultimately irrelevant, because it tells you nothing about yourself as a person in the real world. Unlike literature or film, where the viewer has no agency, the value of 'game as art' is that it's a truly reflexive medium and by embodying yourself as a character in the narrative you can personalize the experience and extract deeper meaning. Without doing this, you might as well be watching a movie, or at least playing a game that has a fixed narrative and avatar. The only other explanation for choosing not to self-insert is identity experimentation (dramatis personae as Jungian thought experiment), but this doesn't explain why you'd choose to be a woman outside of personally experimenting with being a woman.
