I watched the original Gundam series and it wasn't very good, but I managed to finish it. I moved onto Zeta and I tapped out because it was so dull.
Now I'm watching LotGH and it's not very good either. I don't have much faith that I'll finish it.
I read the first few Dune books and they were decent.
How is Space Battleship Yamato?
Try reading "Yukikaze"
I'll check it out.
I love sci-fi, and I love military fiction.
What's Vmodern hollywood?
It's "modern" with a typo
I hate digital filmmaking and the whole diversity agenda.
I didn't even watch the Dune movies.
>If you don't like those other ones i doubt you'll like Yamato.
Damn.
You just want faster pacing/less "filler" (reused animation on scores of mooks)? Or is it mechs + limited scifi concepts that bore ya (as in not sci-fi enough)? Gundam can easily be something people hate because mandatory fights, or if you get suckered into watching some of the AUs they get a little too garystu murderhobo wish fulfillment.
They do feel a little slow (I pretty much feel this way about most animation), but my biggest problem is how simplistic they are. Everything is constantly explained, and the characters are a little basic.
I don't watch tiktok.
I'm not a zoomer.
>I'm not a zoomer.
You clearly are. Zoomerism, like boomerism, is a mental illness that has nothing to do with age.
Dude, frick off. For real. Every fricking generation complains about the next one. Quit being moronic.
You just don't like space opera, maybe even sci fi.
Try some Vmodern hollywood stuff
>I watched the original Gundam series and it wasn't very good, but I managed to finish it. I moved onto Zeta and I tapped out because it was so dull.
>Now I'm watching LotGH and it's not very good either. I don't have much faith that I'll finish it.
Tiktok has rotted your brain.
Gundam and Yamato are shit, LotGH is kino as frick. Maybe you have zoomeritis, it's sadly incurable.
>I watched the original Gundam series and it wasn't very good, but I managed to finish it.
you should have just watched the movie trilogy, it literally is a shorter & more coherent version of the same thing.
Anime in general is just pretty boring. Even the really good anime. I also hate the tropes that every anime has. No one talks or acts like a fricking human, it's all stilted gay video game dialogue every time. It wasn't as bad when I was an autistic young teen, but watching it at 30something is a whole different experience, since you know how humans act by this age. Even Marvel movie characters are a million times more realistic than anime characters.
That said, I still prefer anime to modern woke shit. I just have to treat it like it's a video game alternate universe. I can't relate on a human level anymore.
yeah the japanese write like children because they're a mentally impaired people, but it is still leagues above the woke shit.
Gundam is kino but you have to have a tolerance for jank. It's like watching Star Trek TOS.
Zeta is an insane step up in quality but some of the plot points do get a bit crazy.
i said it before and i'll say it again, the gundam movie trilogy is a condensed and more competent form of the original series. it removes the jank. after that any gundam show that isn't wing or g is a waste of time (haven't seen zeta).
>It's like watching Star Trek TOS.
Even jankier thanks to the fricked up animation, not to mention the blu rays revealing every coffee stain and pube on the animation cels
honestly I didnt notice this shit most of the time because I was pretty engaged by the end. it's really cool to watch amuro go from a screaming teen who eats beans into a cold blooded fragmaster who casually tosses aside the gundam for a chance to murder char
sometimes it's pretty hard to miss
>coffee stain and pube on the animation cels
SOUL
also the animation is great, compared to its contemporaries and taking into account that it wasn't a big budget anime. All the important moments had great animation.
It's fine if you're old, not if you're young. Already been exposed to better looking stuff. I can appreciate the historical importance of the old shit, but I ain't gonna watch that crap.
Im 21 and I saw most of uc gundam when I was 17
The original show is fine if a bit campy at times and some episodes where clearly made only to sell some shit toys
If you want to give the series anothe chance watch the movies
They signifcantly cut down on all the bullshit and streamline the show a bit
If that doesnt work fot you War in the Pocket is also a great start its only a short ova with 6 episodes but its peak gundam in my opinion
>yamato
>logh
Maybe.
>gundam
lol
lmao
rofflewaffle
>he doesn't rate the original series
Macross
the series would have been fine if it ended at zero
Apples and oranges. Star Trek is not a space opera.
I grew up loving robotech in the 80s and decided to watch Macross last year.
It is absolute garbage. 99% of the episodes are about some awful teen romance between an idiot boy, and an infuriatingly stupid and fickle pop idol.
If you don't like those other ones i doubt you'll like Yamato.
>I grew up loving robotech in the 80s
Stopped reading. You're a gorilla Black person with gorilla Black person taste buds.
Frick off, weeb.
**i will ad - Macross Plus is a lot better than the original series.
>It is absolute garbage
someone got DECULTURED
>99% of the episodes are about some awful teen romance
that's 99% of japanese media
they get mentally stuck in high school and never grow out of it
Gundam is more like Star Trek, something that got cancelled but took over the country in reruns.
Also theyre both more popular for the characters than the sci-fi.
deep space 9 destroys all of these
Not LOTGH. That's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that transcends cinema.
It's an extremely low budget cartoon with some bog-standard political musings. There is barely any animation in it at all. To say it "transcends cinema" is insane.
It's also full of shounen tropes like the MC's have bright coloured hair, are barely in their teens and are somehow smarter than all the "pesky adults."
Don't talk about shit you didn't watch moron.
>It's an extremely low budget cartoon with some bog-standard political musings
Somehow it still mogs all western SF. We'll never get someone like Yoshiki Tanaka ever again.
It's a meme, you dip. You fell for it.
We got pretty close to a Tanaka-written 0080 once, but they got the guy from Gainax instead who directed Royal Space Force.
>Somehow it still mogs all western SF.
No.
>No.
Yeah
Nope. Lovecraft alone mogs everything Japanese and that is barely beginning to scratch the surface.
How would you even know?
>Lovecraft
>sci-fi
He is and was published in many of those pulp magazines. I refuse to spoonfeed you, but In The Walls of Eryx alone proves my point.
The fact that minuscule exceptions exists prove your point?
mmm...
Nah. Lovecraft is overrated. He has a good taste on cat names though.
From what I've read it's at least three cats with similar names. His own Black person-man, The Rats in the Walls Black person-man and there's another cat simply called Nig in, I think, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
It is indeed a masterpiece. Nothing I've seen is more truthful in its depictions of how humans behave (e.g. their fears and motivations, their reactions to death, the differences between men and women), the lure of military glory despite the horrors of war, how nations, "democratic" or no, are corrupted over time etc, etc. And the music is sublime.
I strongly suspect most people who dislike it are either low-attention-span zoomers weaned on moronic Hollyslop, or leftists/normie conservatives who don't like seeing their world views BTFO'd - or israelites seething at the depiction of a faction of merchants exerting financial control over nations/secretly pitting them against each other. Tellingly, the criticisms are almost invariably superficial: it's the janky art style (which becomes endearing IMO), or the length, or "muh" whatever (like "muh" is an argument). Yang being a Gary Stu is about the only not-unreasonable criticism I've seen - and even there I'd push back, as I've known people who had Yang-level luck/natural ability (and even was like that once myself for a short time).
weeb tend to overrate LOGH because the show mades them feel smart, most of the characters are wooden, author's message conveyed by not so subtle monologues and has a weak grasp of political theory
>all western SF
LOGH is barely Sci-Fi, it's just politics in the future because writing it like that gives the author space to be original and still draw from current human history. Tanaka could never write something like Firefall, Solaris or anything by Vernor Vinge really. Tanaka's not bad, but he's not even close to the best.
The Japanese science fiction most favored by core Japanese science fiction fans is Sakyo Komatsu's "Hateshinaki Nagare no hate ni" and his other works, while Yoshiki Tanaka is not so highly regarded by the core audience compared to his support among the light audience.
The golden age of Japanese SF was in the 60s and 70s, but with a few exceptions, it is unlikely that works from this period will ever be translated into English.
>mogs all western sci-fi despite being a watered down star wars
You're a child watching something made with crayons or CGI made to look like crayons.
>Tellingly, the criticisms are almost invariably superficial: it's the janky art style
Boring characters, large scale war that feel very small (half of the show is about Iserlohn fortress), plot points going nowhere, like pretty much everything about Phezzan and Rubinsky, the actual villains are goofy cartoonish cultists, the plot is clearly written by some reactionary who doesn't know history very well.
>large scale war that feel very small (half of the show is about Iserlohn fortress)
You are aware most of the Iserlohn's screentime is during under Yang's control which took place after the big war right? The latter half of LOGH isn't even about a war on a galactic scale, it's a counter-insurgency against remnants of non-existing illegitimate state.
I watched this stuff 15 years ago. Don't remember details. All I remember is how prominent was this one location. The Arrakis of LOGH.
Zero media literacy, I guess
>Boring characters
Not Marvel-quippy enough for you? A guy and his bro attempting to overthrow a galactic regime too much of a yawner? No love for Merkatz even? Bittenfeld? Schenkopp?
>(half of the show is about Iserlohn fortress)
It's "about" things like death and politics and war, but sure, Iserlohn features prominently, because it's a strategic choke point (along with Phezzan). You could reasonably say that's unrealistic in space, but it's obvious why Tanaka set things up that way.
>plot points going nowhere
Which are you thinking of, out of interest? It's a sprawling epic, so there probably are some plot lines that get short shrift, but I don't remember thinking anything major was left unresolved.
>like pretty much everything about Phezzan and Rubinsky
No surprise you didn't like that aspect 😉
>the actual villains are goofy cartoonish cultists
The Earth cult could have been better developed, I'll give you that. They want Earth to be the centre of power again, just because, and their behind-the-curtain control of Phezzan isn't entirely convincing. (On the other hand, it's shown that they don't really have control over Rubinsky, so...)
>the plot is clearly written by some reactionary who doesn't know history very well
Oh, a "reactionary" 🙂 Translation: you didn't like seeing your world view BTFO'd. Quelle surprise 😉
>;)
>:)
>;)
Disappointing if this is the only "counter-argument" I'm going to get. If I'm right, I'm right, but I was interested in hearing another point of view that's actually thought out.
Re the criticism that Tanaka "doesn't know history very well", why should things have to play out just as they did/very close to how they did in 18th/19th century Europe, say? (LoGH has other influences besides Prussia.)
look at this weeb barking, lmao, you're a chihuahua, start reading books instead
Maybe you should start reading them too; then perhaps you'd learn basic punctuation, and maybe even how to muster a better argument than none at all.
damn
Again, I await an argument. Maybe you're implying that next to the classics of ancient Greek literature, LoGH is trash (as if they're particularly comparable)? For such an apparently well-read individual, you sure are lazy when it comes to self-expression.
Babylon 5 mogs Deep Space 9
watch Babylon 5, first few episoes are a bit rough, but its the best space opera ever
Star Trek (real Trek only) depends
SW yes. Only the OT is any good anyway
DUNC easily. Lowest bar ever.
SCHWARZ
LANCENREITER
tfw to this day I still don't know if I watched LoGH with the correct subs.
The CA (yellow) subs get the grandiose dialogue feeling right but they're a little more inaccurate, particularly the early ones.
All the memes are from their translation.
The official subs are sterile and do t sound nearly as up their own ass as the Imperials do in the Nipponese.
Yellow subtitles are the go to.
please don't post stuff like this
I don't want to see the bastard troonyBlack person liveaction netflix abomination
It's going to happen.
Tomino gundam is only 'good' for 0079 and zeta. And hell the magic bullshit starts to go hard with zeta with the outright 'invincibility' moment, which infects sequels. And just to make sure the bad guys lose, they NEVER get to use this magic themselves.
Yes it's a low budget toy ad, but it's REALLY low budget. Lots of reuse, token daily battle, tominos classic insane dialog. But by god even with the many things I complain about I love the setting, just not how newtype bullshit saves the day. I do consider half of ZZ a time waste.
I read Yamato and Harlock manga recently. Cool stuff, but a lot of the characters over both books looked way too similar and it threw me off a lot.
Have not watched Battleship Yamato (I assume thats whats in the op).
Gundam has great designs but most of what Ive seen from the universe was slop.
LOTGH is fantastic.
og Gundam is underrated
LotGH is overrated
Bad bait be better.
>casually mogs Star Wars
That one's false.
>prequelshit
kek
>Do You Remember Kino?
Don't listen to /misc/tards claiming that LOGH is good. I made that mistake. What a waste of time.
Meant for (You).
Be honest now. Which are you: low-attention-span zoomer, leftist/normie conservative or Phezzani? Or some combination?
I'm a person who studied history and read a lot of books about 19th and early 20th century Germany.
OK, that would exclude you from the first category. But not necessarily the other two.
>leftist/normie conservative
Lol, so the only people who enjoy this slop are armchair teenage fascist? Not really surprising.
You might be right about the fascist part. Because the show is honest about human behaviour, and if you're honest yourself, that's likely where you'll end up politically. Though you're ignoring the fact that the show is also honest about the problems of fascistic regimes. And that it ends, somewhat hopefully, with the beginnings of a movement away from total autocratic rule and towards at least a limited form of self-government.
"Armchair" and "teenage" are just meaningless insults. We get it: you're not a fascist.
Babylon 5 mogs all the Jap crap thoughever
>japanese movie about war
>WEAH I DON'T WANT TO BE DOING THIS
>uboat kino in space
I will now watch your trannime
I'm currently watching Space Runaway Ideon.
It reminds me a lot of MSG. Tomino has a very specific style. He seems to enjoy inserting annoying crying/screaming children. I'm watching a lot of older mecha shows before moving on to more popular ones to see how they inspired later entries. I know people who go "EVANGELION IS SO UNIQUE THERE'S NO OTHER SHOWS LIKE IT, UNLIKE OTHER MECHA IT'S ABOUT THE CHARACTERS AND NOT THE ROBOTS" despite never watching other mecha shows, I'm gonna see how true that is
Tomino's 70s mecha show Zambot 3 is one of the biggest inspirations for Eva, and one of his most unhinged works in general.
Luv me Zambot 3 and Victory Gundam.
Haven't seen Ideon yet. Everything I know about it comes from SRW@3.
Dune is better than all of these.
ngl, logh is a big disappointment
>ngl
That remains to be seen.
>logh is a big disappointment
How so?
I thought it would be more complex
Actually fair. I can see that.
>a weak grasp of political theory
How so?
the jap author seems to make more of a commentary about japan's history from the meiji until the present day, hence his comparison between monarchy (imperial japan) vs democracy (japan since 1950) than the comparison between monarchical political systems (which they're various forms of it) and republics (in which pure democracy only exists briefly, often a transition stage towards oligarchy)
i'm not an expert but i'm sure i know more than this jap who just paint his biases onto the story, don't even get me started with mary sue yang wenli
also having 3 and half factions in a setting that emcompasses a whole galaxy is laughable
tl;dr it's woke homosexual shit with mid space battles that make no logical or tactical sense
the jap author has the same syndrome as george lucas; wanting his stories to be taken more seriously, so they resort to political commentary which they failed at it because they don't have a in-depth knowledge about political theory
but lucas at least was smart and used subtext, even when he was more galaxy brained about it and made it the central plot of the prequels.
Well, even if it were just/mainly a commentary on/inspired by Imperial vs modern Japan, would that necessarily be a bad thing? Not that I think it is - Reinhard's rise is analogous to that of Napoleon, for instance, and there are Roman influences too, plus the Hitler parallels with Rudolf and his belief in eugenics.
>mary sue yang wenli
Already addressed that in an earlier post, but sure, that's how some people feel. He does acknowledge his luck at least.
>also having 3 and half factions in a setting that emcompasses a whole galaxy is laughable
That what's I assume the poster who expected it to be more complex meant (if you're not the same guy). And yeah, that's a weak point. It doesn't tarnish it too much for me, but I can see how it might for some.
Gundam is most inspired by Heinlein's Starship Troopers, yet no one mentions it.
because it's really just the power armor concept, which quickly got elaborated into something closer to the giant robots that were already popular. Otherwise StarshipTrooper's influence is vestigial, the only other element that's similar is the colony drop being similar to the bugs dropping a meteor on Buenos Aires.
That said there's a bunch of other Heinlein plot elements from other works he wrote that get used in gundam, it's got a lot of similarities to the plot of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, which is about a colony revolt and colonists who live in space evolving past Earth's gravity. I'm surprised no one ever picks up on that
>I'm surprised no one ever picks up on that
weebs don't like reading and sci-fi readers don't watch anime because it's for children
>weebs don't like reading
objectively false statement
if a weeb finds an anime they like they will inspect the manga it's based on, and will even infringe upon the light novel genre out of curiosity.
now it's true that they can't read a real novel (pic related i'm reading it atm and have the rest of the series ready to go right after) but to say they don't like reading is false.
>can't read a real novel
Jietai/GATE was a real full length novel series. it also got an mango and anime adaptation. the LN version of it was a cash grab to re-sell the novels in more bite sized pieces.
why don't you know this. Cinemaphile is animes and other stuff. not tv and other stuff.
i have no idea what the frick you're even talking about, i'm a casual weeb. i read manga if i like the anime and neither are too long. that's about it.
literally every spacesuit soldier ever made is inspired by that book.
>casually mogs all of media
Is Cinemaphile really that shitty that we need 24/7 anime topics on this board
mogs Dunc
Dune should have been anime.
But the best we got was Desert Punk.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/25/Sunabouzu
the latest animation of Babylon 5 is very anime.
https://babylon5.fandom.com/wiki/Babylon_5:_The_Road_Home
how do you even compare these shows to star wars
star trek and dunc maybe but star wars is just space fantasy for children so i fail to see any overlap
anime is for children, that's the overlap
also it's a matter of the english/americans taking inspiration from the japanese and vice versa. yamato was influenced by american movies involving ships, while kurosawa (influenced by john ford) influenced star wars and heinlein influenced gundam (also influenced by yamato).
don't mind me, just posting the undisputable objectively best mobile suit design
>ver ka
but yes
not so FRICKING fast
get out of here mr bushido
I'm fairly sure LOGH at least lifted some inspiration from Dune
base
