Sugar iirc but I frankly don't see how the kid could be anything but a Greg clone and she wanted Steven to be a genuine offspring and "part" of her. Rose basically gave up immortality to make Steven because she believed in creation so much. Maybe it's silly, since she's trying to imitate a species she is fundamentally different from and she could perhaps have settled for just making gems (without kindergarten use --although it seems like the gems made without a kindergarten are sort of stunted) but she loved the ability of humans to grow and change so much.

I always felt bad for Pink Diamond, seeing how difficult it is for gems to grow and change which seem to be against both their nature and programming. The Diamonds' decision to make the Cluster and (try) to kill the gems that got corrupted was entirely on them. She thought her getting shattered would make the Diamonds leave Earth because they pretty much showed to her everyday how little they cared about her. Also despite all of this she saved Earth and like million of species from going extinct because of the Diamonds.

She didn't escape responsibility because.. What responsibility? When she got pregnant literally nothing was going on that she was aware of. Thousands of years have passed with no contact from Homeworld or any major danger. Although her doing this was because of how much he hated herself and despite changing to Rose Quartz she wanted to change for reals, giving up her own self to birth Steven was sorta selfless in a sense.
She’s a sociopathic frickup and knew it, so she killed herself and gave her powers to her son, who would be able to use her powers with the empathy of a human.

If Pink Diamond was erased, her form wouldn't show up when regenerating. The three crystal gems didn't even have their forms when they reformed after being factory reset in the movie and even they got to regain their memories.
I think of it as perhaps a bit like a reincarnation thing (with her speech about how she’ll be seeing the world through Steven’s eyes and all of that), but not in a sense that it would ever be possible to “come out.” Perhaps it’s a recycling and a rebirth of her essence in some sense like in some Eastern spiritualities, but her “self” is imo still effectively dead and gone for good.
I believe that Pink's sentience is truly gone; she killed her ego and functions only as life support experiencing existence through Steven's POV.
