Yeah, although it's played straight enough where the players dont really react to what they became most of the time. The Battledrome of the Sexes episode would have probably done the trick though.

Duel Masters failed in the West because of the anime dub. Yugioh's plot is dumb, the duels are dumb, but they took themselves seriously and somewhat taught people how the game works. I liked the virtual world excuse that give Chaotic used but I get an impression on how the game is played.

The Duel Masters dub was legendary. Kokujo and Rekuda had some of the funniest lines.

It was based around four factions constantly at Wallace each other for different reasons and sometimes just because they have grudges or hate each other who somehow managed to fight each other even though they live nowhere near each other and don't share a border with with badass leaders you can actually pray because they go in combat themselves in retrospect it seems a lot like a table top multi-facing war game.

It ended abruptly because the studio tried to sue the creators to steal the IP from them. It went as horribly as you'd expect, but neither party could produce anything with the IP until the case was settled, by which point the brand was dead.
I expect it to return some day like Bakugan did but who knows how successful such a revival would be.

One aspect I appreciate is unlike other card game shows the protagonist characters actually lost fairly frequently, and battles were won by strategy instead of lucky draws or heroic willpower.
It also felt like it got more into the real life culture and types of players you get in trading card games. Tom was super invested in the lore, Peyton was basically the rogue deck player that would come in with unorthodox strategies, Sarah was more interested in the collecting and trading aspect, and Kaz was that guy who was a super fanboy of one specific faction and character like those 40k players who only play Orks and spout constant memes about them.
