Cinemaphile goes through these periods where something new comes out and every scrambles to figure out what the popular opinion is, and then say the opposite... but because everyone does it, everyone ends up saying the same thing about it. then a week goes by, the 'contrarian' opinion becomes commonplace and popular, and so everyone, en masse, changes their opinion again to say the opposite. but that THAT new opinion becomes commonplace again, so they switch again. and that wave pattern continues until the topic fizzles out and then, only then, can a rare few anons come out of the woodwork and actually speak their mind genuinely on the topic.
it's kinda like how reddit will all simultaniously change their mind to say whatever's acceptable to say... except because reddit latches onto whats popular, whereas Cinemaphile latches onto what's un-popular, Cinemaphile's trend pattern tends to change quicker
but really, it's in the same spirit

I hate this because I can't say I hate the movie without being associated with these tards. The movie just sucked.

              Anonymous

yeah it sucks because if your opinion just so happens to fit the consensus, you're labeled a moron who thinks like everyone else, whereas if it opposes the consensus you're seen as a "contrarian."
but i can't deny people like that exists, ones who really do just base their opinions on topics based around what they feel they're 'supposed' to think, sometimes without even watching the movie or carting about the topic at hand or whatever

that's why we need to start expressing out opinions more thoroughly and nuanced if we wanna have a serious discussion about it, it'll automatically filter the idiots who can't do it because they can only speak in templateposts and pre-approved statements

Maybe people will take your opinions more seriously if you're able to actually articulate why you think a thing is bad. Saying a thing sucks isn't criticism, which is often what happens here. People here often just use the usual general lines like overrated, sucks, boring and then wonder why others just think they're being contrarian.

you're right, in the very literal sense of being 'anti-reddit', not as in "unlike reddit" but rather the complete other end of the horseshoe, like black and white

Some people are just evil, and it's honestly a really dull movie trope that everything is 'supposed' to have 'an origin'. People who base their understandings on movies are idiots.

You can have a villain be incompetent or threatening
You can have a villain shallow or complex
You can have a villain colorful or bleak
But you cannot have a villain be BORING and Jack Horner is anything but boring

There were like 3 antagonist. The bears for the anti-villain with redemption, the grim ripper wolf for the personal feud with the hero. Nothing wrong with having the obligatory villain with zero redemption.

      Anonymous

Yeah people forget that movie had three villains of different types. The bears are the 'sympathetic' villains with personal goals, Jack Horny is a simple villain driven by pure ego, and death is a sort of natural eternal villain that's more of a symbol than an individual.

No, it's great because of the ensemble cast. Not everyone needs to have depth. Or rather, it depends on the purpose of the character. Jack Horner acts as the central overall conflict that drives all the other characters' developments. Seeing a douchebag like Jack made Puss come to the realization nobody needs the wish as he finally confronts and make peace with death. Meanwhile, Jack's wanton disregard for everyone made Goldy realized what really mattered to her. Hell, even for Jack, it's kinda cliche but it still serves to illustrate that a greedy man like him will never have enough. He also has a huge ass business and hoarded a bunch of magical/legendary artifacts, but it's still not enough, which contrasts against Goldy realizing she doesn't actually need or care about all that. They all have their themes and narratives that plays off against each other.

Puss n Boots is by no means some kind of masterpiece, but it knows exactly what story it wants to tell, sticks with it and executes it smoothly, hence resulting in a simple but solid film.

Let villains be evil. Not every bad guy needs a sympathetic backstory.

Evil people exist in the world.

    >Admit it, Puss in Boots is overrated
It definitely is, but having a villain who's genuinely just a piece of shit and doesn't deny it is actually a positive point in the movie's favor. I'm not saying sympathetic villains don't have their place but it feels like nowadays we're drowning in them.

Back when naruto started the whole "villain has a sad backstory and he isn't all bad just misunderstood" it was actually fairly new trope and decently writted. After that this trope got so abused where people always wanted the villain to be reedemed so It became boring and laxy writting.
This character going back to being an irredeemable villain in a world where every villain is somehow able to become a good guy is actually really fresh since it goes against your expectations.
He's also evil with no reason whatsoever, doesn't have a sad backstory where he get's wronged by the world nor anything gay like that, bro is evil just because (which is realistic since some people are just bad with no reason)
